Royal Navy comes to aid of giraffe MARWELL, England (AP) — Zoo owner John Knowles is go ing to try to raise his stranded giraffe Victor to his feet with a four-legged sling suspended from four scaffolds. “He will either have a triumph and stand or have his death throes in front of the world, which makes me a bit sick,” said Knowles, who has been trying since early Friday to coax the one-ton, 15-year-old giraffe back onto all fours. The 18-foot-tall animal appar ently collapsed in his paddock at Knowles’ wildlife farm 70 miles southlest of London while trying to mate with one of his three wives. The owner said he’d received more than 1,000 telegrams ex pressing concern and suggest ing ways to get Victor to his feet. One proposed digging a swimming pool around the ani mal and floating him to his feet, but giraffes don’t like water. Offers from a hypnotist and a helicopter crew were declined. A faith healer was allowed to lay his hands on the animal’s spots briefly, and un successfully. Victor quietly chewed fresh grass and drank water as his keepers fed saline solutions into his weakening body through an intravenous tube in his eightfoot neck.
