Golf Barnes leads tourney WORKSOP, England — Scotland’s Brian Barnes found his element in the cold, howling winds that swept away the hopes of American champion Hubert Green and posted a three-under-par 68 that gave him a two-stroke lead in the first round of the $70,000 British Masters golf tournament. Green, the U.S. and Irish Open champion, suffered a major jolt in his attempt to become the first American to win this event, one Os Britain’s top tournaments. He played the back nine — when the winds were at their worst — in 40 and was seven shots off the pace at 75. Graham Marsh of Australia, winner of the Heritage Classic in the United States earlier this season, topped a list of seven players tied for second with 70. Prep review Laney-Richmond in spotlight By BARBARA WASHINGTON AP Prep Editor Laney Coach David Dupree, whose Wildcats came up on the short end of a 20-16 game with archrival Richmond Academy last season, feels his team’s defense may alter the outcome in the ’Cats’ favor this year. , “I’m an optimist,” said Dupree, whose Wildcats have gone 145-43-6 since he became head coach in 1958 and finished 6-4 last year. “We never look back.” Dupree’s reasons for optimism are 6-foot-4, 215-pound linebacker Chip Banks, who is averaging 10 individual tackles a game, and Gary Pollard, a 6-foot-l, 195-pound linebacker who has eight stops a game. The ’Cats, tied for 10th with Newnan in a Class AAA Associated Press poll, have limited their opponents to less than 60 yards per game on the ground this season. Banks also is an excellent receiver at tight end, and he and quarterback James Wilson and fullback Darryl Cogle form a powerful offense. Wilson threw for more than 1,000 yards last season and has four touchdown passes this year. “If we can contain them, it’s going to be a low-scoring and hard-hitting game,” said Richmond Coach Paul Inglett, whose Musketeers finished 9-1 last year. Safety Peter Philpot, also an excellent receiver at split end, and linebackers Tony Jones and John LoSchaibo are key Richmond defenders. Quarterback Ted Jenkins, back after suffering a shoulder separation, will be directing a Richmond Wish bone offense which features halfback Darish Davis and fullback Mark O’Neal. Davis, also returning from an injury, gained more than 400 yards in his first two games, including 251 picked up for three touchdowns in a 40-21 victory over Newton County. He gained 1,875 yards and scored 18 touchdowns last year. O’Neal, a 210-pounder, has gained more than 300 yards this year. Other major high school games this weekend feature Dougherty at Valdosta, Douglass of Atlanta at Southwest DeKalb, Peach County at Perry, Lakeshore at Fayette County, Chattooga at Dalton, Claxton at Vidalia, Hogansville at West Point and Macon County at Pelham. Vidalia, 2-1 and tied with Central Gwinnett for seventh in Class A, came from behind last year to defeat subregion 7:30 at Memorial Stadium without the services of one of their top ground gainers. Harrison Price, the B-team’s starting tailback, suffered bruised ribs in last week’s loss to LaGrange and was in the hospital for several days. Price was dismissed from the hospital Monday and is ex pected to be out of action for a couple of more weeks. The game Friday night will be the annual Elks Benefit game. Proceeds of the game will go to support youth activities sponsored by the Elks. These activities include transporting the Griffin High Band of Gold to out of town games, the Elks Little League team, the Elks Babe Ruth team, Boys and Girls State participants, youth scholarships and other projects involving the youth of the community. “We’re looking for a real tough ball game," Coach Joe Grubbs said. Grubbs said the Bear Cubs are excited about the Friday night game and are looking to get back on the winning track after losing to LaGrange last week. Coach Grubbs said the Forest Park team is about as big as but not as fast. He said it will be difficult for the Bear Cubs to run inside against the baby Panthers, but he is hopeful Griffin can use its speed in the outside game. The game will be the first night game for both of the teams. The Bear Cubs had won 19 consecutive games before last week’s loss to LaGrange. Coach Grubbs is hoping another winning streak will begin Friday night. Mac Laurin takes lead in tourney PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. (AP) — Ceil MacLaurin of Sa vannah fired an 82 Wednesday to post a two-round score of 160 and take a two-stroke edge into today’s final round of the Geor gia Women’s Golf Association tournament. Mitzi Edge, who grabbed the lead Tuesday with a 76, sagged to second place at 162 with an 86 on the 6,000-yard par 74 Flat Creek Club course. Tied for third at 166 were Ca rol Bowman of Peachtree City, Mary King of Rome and Elea nor Walker of Atlanta. Griffin High Bears play Forest Park Saturday night 2ANorth foe Claxton, 34-22. Claxton is 4-0 so far this season. “Claxton is the same team they were last year, only quicker, by far the quickest team we’ll see this year, and they have an extremely good passing game,” said Vidalia Coach John Cravey. Claxton’s offense, which rolled up 131 points in three games, is led by three-year starting quarterback Harold Mercer and fullback Tony McNeal, who has gained 501 yards in four games. Quarterback Chris Reeves, fullback Johnny Taylor, tailbacks Greg Hamrick and Jody Peacock and setback Darryl Collins form the nucleus of Vidalia’s offense. In other Friday night high school football games across Georgia, Kendrick is at Columbus, Butler is at Hephzibah, Northeast of Macon is at Swainsboro, Lithia Springs is at North Cobb, Wheeler is at Douglas County, Morrow is at Newnan, Camden County is at Ware County, Johnson of Savannah is at Waycross, Sequoyah is at Cedar Shoals, West Laurens is at Americus, Woodward Academy is at Henry County, Troup is at Collins, East of Atlanta is at Harper, Turner County is at Seminole County, Clinch County is at Atkinson County and Central Gwinnett is at Commerce. The Bears have been All, Shavers meet tonight NEW YORK (AP) - Tonight it’s Eamie Shavers’ turn to take a crack at the world heavyweight boxing title held by Muhammad Ali, who be littles his bald-headed challeng er by calling him “The Acorn” or “Eamie Shaffers.” The fight, 15 rounds or less at Madison Square Garden, will be the 35-year-old Ali’s 22nd title fight. It also will be Ali’s 19th title defense in his two terms as champion and it comes one year and one day after Ali’s unanimous 15-round decision over Ken Norton in Yankee Sta dium. Hardly anyone expects this fight to go 15 rounds and hardly anyone expects a victory by the 33-year-old Shavers, of Warren, Ohio. Shavers, whose chin and Rod Carew assured of 6th batting title By GENE LAHAMMER Associated Press Writer BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) — Sweet-swinging Twins Rod Carew is having the kind of stamina are questionable, feels he can go 15 rounds, but ac knowledges it would be ex tremely difficult for him to win a decision. His best chance lies in his strength vs. strength battle against the 35-year-old champion — Shavers’ devas tating punch against Ali’s great ability to take a punch. “He can’t hit harder than Sonny Liston, or Joe Frazier or George Forman,” said Ali. “I’ll put a lot of pressure on him and if I hit him on the chin he’ll go,” said Shavers. “He has a lot more wars, tough fights. They start taking a toll on you.” Ali, who officially weighed 225 to 2im for Shavers Wednesday, preferred to talk about ex perience and the ability to handle the pressure of heavyeight title fights. “I’ll tell you about this sport,” said Ali. “It’s like a horse race, season that has baseball buffs thumbing through the record books. Carew has a lofty .384 batting average and has long been as sured of winning his sixth American League batting title. That ties him with Ted Wil liams. Only Ty Cobb, with 12, Honus Wagner with eight, and Roger Hornsby and Stan Musial with seven each have won more bat ting crowns. Carew will turn 32 Saturday and figures to have at least three or four more top flight seasons. His career average of .334 is tops among active players and is the second highest since the advent of night baseball more than 35 years ago. Williams re tired in 1960 with a career av erage of .344. Musial had a .331 mark when he called it quits in 1963. “Carew is one of the great stylists of all time,” says Min nesota Twins Manager Gene Mauch of his superstar. “My time only reaches back 35 years." With three games remaining, Extra point, safety win Senior games Alan Roberts scored an extra point in the first quarter Wednesday afternoon and it proved to be the winning margin in the Colts-Packers game in the Senior Football League. The Colts edged the Packers 13- Roberts scored the extra point after Otis Davis had scored the first touchdown. Davis also scored in the third quarter. The Packers put points on the board in the first and fourth quarters. Perry Wilson and James Hightower scored the touchdowns. In other Senior League action, the Falcons defeated the Bills 14- by scoring a fourth Up the middle like a stock auto race. It’s the brains that win, not the physical ability.” Then the champion jumped on the fact that, except for a brief confrontation at a midtown news conference Monday, the Shavers camp has kept its fighter away from a face-to-face meeting with Ali. “He’s scared,” said Ali of the 33-year-old challenger, who weighed-in and left before the champion appeared. “He seriously doesn’t want to ,see me here. But he’ll have to face me in the ring. Then when he hears the national anthem” — Ali then hummed a few bars — “and when he hears the crowd start shouting, ‘All, Ali, Ali,’ he’s gonna say to himself, ‘I must be crazy. What did I get into?’ Then while the referee is giving instructions, I’m gonna Carew has collected 232 hits. That’s the highest total in the major leagues since Joe Med wick banged out 237 safeties in 1937. His average will be the high est since Williams notched a .388 mark 20 years ago and a hot streak against Milwaukee could make it the highest since Williams hit .406 in 1941. The speedy Carew leads the league with 16 triples, the most in the American League since Minnie Minoso collected 18 for Chicago in 1954. He also leads the majors in runs scored with 123. “I don’t really ever set goals,” Carew said. He said his personal accom plishments this season have been satisfying, but went on to say, “It’s also frustrating when you don’t win. All I can say is I did my best. My only complaint is I wish we had done better.” The Twins led the American League West for most of the first half of the season but hit a tailspin in August and fell from contention. quarter safety and the Vikings routed the Bucs 44-6.
