He is very difficult to rush because he is so quick and has such great speed. He is also an outstanding passer and a 40-yard plus punter.” Barfield says if the Wolfpack doesn’t have the best offense the Tigers have faced all year, they “certainly have the most ex plosive.” Barfield’s formula for beating a team that “can score from anywhere on the field at any time” is “to make them work for everything, and then keep the ball for awhile ourselves.” And North Carolina State Coach Bo Rein knows one Tiger who’ll try to make the Wolfpack work for every inch of real estate — Auburn linebacker Freddie Smith. “We can’t say enough about Freddie Smith,” says Rein. “You people are lucky you can watch him week after week.” Smith, a sophomore, led the Tigers to a 21-15 victory over Ole Miss. The rule is supposed to equalize maturity of players competing against each other, Owens wrote in his opinion, “but it obviously doesn’t do so. The rule just has no ex pansion and contraction possibilities. It’s embedded in concrete. “I think that to arbitrarily apply such a rule to every child regardless of when they started to school, how many years they have been in school, what age they are, how many years they have actually participated in athletics in Bearcubs roll to 48-6 victory over Jonesboro Tim Turnipseed, Harrison Price and Keith Head scored 2 touchdowns each and Wayne Curtis scored one Thursday in the Griffin “B” team’s 48-6 victory over Jonesboro. The association can adopt a new eligibility rule which Owens will accept, it can ask him for a permanent ruling or it can appeal his decision to a higher court. There was no immediate reaction from the GHSA. Owens’ ruling came in a preliminary hearing on the case brought by Ashley’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Atkins of Fayetteville. They had been told by the school’s coach and principal and by GHSA executives that there was no way to fight the eligibility ruling, and Owens said that was one reason he decided the case as he did. “Frankly, it appears to the court that at such time as this case is finally resolved that the plaintiffs are likely to prevail on the question of whether or not due process requires some type of hardship committee hearing as to the application of the eight-semester rule,” Owens wrote. easy for the backs to run,” he said.
