HEALTH Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D. False treatment for gout By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D. DEAR DR LAMB - Some friends of mine have recommended pantothenic acid for gout and bursitis. What is your opinion on this? I am already taking alopurinok Should they be mixed? DEAR READER - To use an old phrase, "with friends like that who needs enemies?" Pantothenic acid has no value at all in treating gout, bursitis or arthritis. There have been a lot of false and exaggerated claims recently in quasi-health publications but none of these are based on legitimate scien tific facts. Pantothenic comes from a Greek word meaning “from everywhere" which aptly describes its general distribu tion in various foods. You can hardly eat and not get it. It is essential in the coenzymes used in basic cell metabolism but you undoubtedly have enough. I regard some of the promo tion of substances such as pan tothenic acid as a cure-all for ailments as akin to selling snake oil at an old fashioned travelling medicine show — one of our earlier forms of quackery The real danger in using vitamins in a host of con ditions which additional vitamins do not aid is that it prevents the patient from seeking and getting early help for important medical ailments. Better stick with your doctor and your alopurinol which does have an important action in treating gout. Pantothenic acid has nothing to do with gout. I am sending you the Health Letter number 2-3, Gout, Uric Acid, so you can better understand your problem. Others who want this issue can send 50 cents with a long, stamped, self-addressed envelope for it. DEAR DR LAMB - My husband has irritation in his right eye and the doctor said fjx POLLY S POINTERS : Polly Cramer To dye, or not to dye POLLY’S PROBLEM By Polly Cramer DEAR POLLY — Can rubber backed draperies be dyed successfully? I have a cream colored pair that I cannot use unless they are dyed another color. My husband carries a lunch pail to work and with the recent high temperatures he was concerned about the effect of foods like mayonnaise, lunch meats, etc. I buy bread and snack cakes in large quantities direct from the bakery and keep them in the freezer. Now I put a frozen pie or cake in his lunch pail just before he leaves for work each morning and it keeps the pail cool as it thaws. So far this has worked beautifully. — PHYLLIS. DEAR PHYLLIS — I have been advised that such draperies will not take kindly to dyeing. Perhaps you could add a band or bands of color to make them fit into the room where you want to use these cream colored draperies. — POLLY. DEAR POLLY — I want to tell Mrs. L.T. that years ago when I noticed that my clothing was becoming soiled from the print on the newspaper, I bought a yard of dark colored per cale and hemmed it all around. I keep this folded under a sofa cushion when not in use but when I read the paper I spread it over my chest and lap and down to my knees. This way ink from the newspaper never gets on my clothing and the percale square can be popped into the sewing machine when necessary. — ZELMA. DEAR POLLY — I solved the problem of ink stains on my clothes after reading the newspaper by keeping a terry hand towel, a dark one, on the arm of my reading chair and even keep one on my chair on the front porch. I always fold it with soiled side inside and the clean one out so it is laid in my lap in the same way. It is washed once a week. — BESSIE. DEAR POLLY — To clean combs and hair brushes I soak them in baking soda and hot water for a few minutes. Rinse, shake off the excess water and let them dry. I suggested this idea to my hair dresser who thought it was excellent and uses it herself. — D.E.S. He said this was a small growth which might slowly get larger and there was nothing to do but use some kind of eye-wash for relief. Shouldn’t it be • removed? I am concerned that it might be malignant or become so. Would this condi tion eventually damage his eyesight? DEAR READER - No, a pterygium is not malignant and it will not become malig nant. It is really a folded over portion of the thin membrane over the surface of the eye we call the conjunctiva. It looks like something that should be wiped out of the eye but, of course, that isn't possible. It may have a milky appearance and may have prominent blood vessels in it. As long as it doesn’t grow fast enough to cover a major part of the pupil of the eye and obstruct vision it will not do any harm. It is often a cosmetic problem. Your doctor probably doesn’t want to have it remov ed surgically unless necessary because it often recurs. They tend to recur regardless of the type of surgery if the patient lives in tropical areas and are less likely to return if a person lives in a more temperate climate. Since you live in the central midwest that is in his favor if it should become necessary to remove it. Pterygiums are most likely to occur in people exposed to chronic irritation of the con junctiva from sun and wind. Repeated surgery may cause scarring of the surface of the eye and interfere with vision which is another reason for not hastily doing surgery un less there is a good indication for it.
