Jury rejects ‘television insanity’ defense
nounce Zamora guilty of first
degree murder.
A minimum sentence of 25
years in jail was established at
the outset when the prosecution
said it would not seek the death
penalty.
“It’s very unfortunate that
the jury is sending this very
young boy to a state penitentary
where he will become a target
of horrible offenses,” said
defense attorney Ellis Rubin.
“The appellate court should
hear and consider this case be
cause I think the issue present
ed will forge a new frontier in
American jurisprudence,” Ru
bin said in announcing that he
will appeal the verdict.
Zamora, a slender junior high*
school student, appeared pale
and shaken as he heard an as
sistant court clerk read the
jury’s decisions.
He was also found guilty of
burglary, armed robbery and
possession of a firearm during
commission of a felony. Circuit
Judge Paul Baker set sentenc
ing for lsov. 7.
“She’s lost her child,” said
Rubin as he led Yolanda Za
mora, the boy’s mother, from
the courtroom. “It’s time to go
home."
The 52-year-old attorney at
tracted national attention by
pleading Zamora innocent by
reason of “involuntary tele
vision intoxication.”
At one point, Rubin subpoe-

Stoner
seeking
hearing
ATLANTA (AP) - An attor
ney for Marietta, Ga., white su
premacist J.B. Stoner has
asked Gov. George Busbee for a
formal hearing on Alabama’s
request to extradite Stoner to
face charges in connection with
a 1958 church bombing.
Busbee press aide Duane Ri
ner said the request came from
attorney L.S. Cobb in reaction
to the extradition request
signed this week by Alabama
Gov. George Wallace.
The extradition request
hasn’t reached Busbee’s office,
Riner said, but he noted that
Busbee had said he would order
a hearing on the matter if Sto
ner requested one.
Stoner has denied having
anything to do with the bomb
ing.
Busbee is out of the country
on an industry-hunting trip, but
Riner said a hearing could be
conducted in his absence and a
recommendation from legal
aides might be on the gover
nor’s desk when he returns.
Stoner was indicted recently
in connection with the bombing
of the Bethel Baptist Church in
Birmingham. No one was hurt
at the church, which was a cen
ter of civil rights activities at
the time.
