Ronald Peaden of 233 North Hill street reported that someone stole two starters from the lot at Northside Motors. The starters were valued at sls. The police are also in vestigating a slim-slam. Diane Hawkins of Rte. 1, Barnesville, said she was slim-slammed out of a SI,OOO fur coat by two Man injured in truck accident on Hwy. 16 The State Patrol here in vestigated a wreck Friday on Georgia Highway 16. Deaths and funerals Mrs. Ellis The funeral of Mrs. Fay Coppedge Ellis of 1837 Atlanta road who died at the Living Center Friday will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. from the New Salem Baptist Church. The Rev. Ixjgan Smith and the Rev. Dwayne Benfield will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. Mrs. Ellis, widow of Mr. D. Eugene Ellis, had been at the Living Center since July. She is the daughter of the late J. W. Coppedge and the late Nancy Harwell Coppedge. She was a member of the New Salem Baptist Church and was a life-long resident of Spalding County. Mrs. Ellis is survived by a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Birdie Murphy, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Nancy Reems, both of Griffin, nieces and nephews. The body will be taken from Haisten Funeral Home to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the funeral. Haisten Funeral Home is in charge. Miss Mangham The funeral for Miss Pearly Mangham will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Fuller’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Zebulon. The Rev. T. R. Miles will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Miss Mangham is survived by 4 nieces, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Strickland, Mrs. Julia Jackson, of Atlanta, Mrs. Artie Ham mond, and Mrs. Lillie Slaton, both of Griffin. Friends may visit the family at 613 Pool road, Apt. 1, where the funeral cortege will form at 1 p.m. McDowell United Funeral Home is in charge. Mr. Harris The funeral for Mr. John C. Harris of Atlanta will be Sunday at 2 o’clock at the new Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Concord. The Rev. C. L. Walker will officiate and burial will be in the old Mt. Calvary Baptist Church cemetery in Concord. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Lee Harris of Atlanta; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Scales; a son, Milton Dixon, both of Atlanta; 3 sisters, Mrs. Ella Williams, Mrs. Joe Ray, both of Atlanta and Mrs. Mary Ann Askew of Zebulon; a brother, Moses Harris of Griffin; 3 sisters-in law, Mrs. Emerson Jackson, Mrs. Buster Dixon, both of Atlanta, and Mrs. Ruth Harris of Cincinnati, Ohio. David Jay Jackson was charged with theft or mer chandise from the Kmart Store. The merchandise was valued at $32. On Friday Mike Morris reported the theft of the hub caps from his automobile while he was at the Sixth Street Recreation Center. A second slim-slam victim (name withheld) of an edgewood address, said 2 men i slim-slammed her out of S3O. Milan Wade Waters of Orchard Hill was driving a Flavorich Dairy truck going west on Ga. 16 when he ran off the road. He tried to get back on the road and lost control of the truck which overturned in a ditch. Waters was taken to the Griffin Spalding County Hospital where he was treated initially for cuts, bleeding, and abrasions. Damage to the truck was estimated at $24,000. Johnson purchases Ready Mix Tommy Johnson who operates Johnson Concrete Company on Williamson Road has purchased Griffin Ready Mixed Concrete Company from S. Grantland Barnes. Johnson has operated his concrete business since 1966. The Ready Mixed Concrete business is 31 years old ac cording to Barnes. Johnson said the two businesses would operate as one now but would remain at 2 locations. The former Ready Mixed business will continue at its Lyndon Avenue site and the Johnson Concrete business will stay on Williamson Road. In announcing the sale of the business, Barnes said “It has become more and more difficult to run a jam-up business, so we decided after 31 years it was time to get out. . .” Miss Releford completes studies Michelle Bernita Releford has completed her studies at the Albany State College and was graduated with a B. A. degree in English. While at Albany State College, Miss Releford was a member of the Student Council. She also worked with the college’s “Upward Bound” program which admitted high school students as early ap plicants. She has matriculated for further study at Jackson State University, Jackson, Miss., in persuit of a masters degree in educational technology. * In Jackson, Miss Releford is also employed as a secretary for the Hinds County Headstart Project. Miss Releford, a Mount Zion Baptist Church member, is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. ’ Charles C. Releford of Can terberry drive, Griffin. News from our neighbors Dike State rejects tax digest The Pike County tax digest for 1977 has been rejected by the State Department of Revenue. The state agency rejected the digest because of property assessed at less than 40 percent of the fair market value. The total assessed value in the digest was less than that submitted last year. The county board of tax assessors will place a factor of 17 percent to achieve the 40 percent assessment. Volunteer fire force formed Lifsey Springs is forming a volunteer fire department. An old fire truck was purchased from Zebulon by Donnie Dickens and donated to the City of Lifsey Springs. People of the community met Tuesday and elected Dickens fire chief. Plans for a building to house 2 fire trucks are being made. Lamar Mrs. Harris is year’s teacher Mrs. E. T. Harris has been named “Teacher of the Year” in Lamar County. She teaches business education at Lamar County Comprehensive High School. She has been a teacher for 17 years. Upson Yatesville in finals Gov. George Busbee has announced that Yatesville has been selected as one of the finalists in the Governor’s Project Competition Program. Yatesville is in the population category of 1-500. Mayor Walter Boyt said, “It’s an honor for us to have accomplished that much.” Yatesville is one of 5 cities to make the finals in its category. The program competition is based on how much a town improves itself. Mrs. Ford is ‘Teacher of Year’ Mrs. Eleanor Ford, a first grade teacher at North Thomaston School, has been named “Teacher of the Year” in the city school system for 1978. Mrs. Ford has taught in Thomaston public schools for 30 years. Butts Gas system transferred The formal transfer of the City of Jackson’s natural gas distribution system to the Georgia Natural Gas Company, a subsidiary of Atlanta Gas Light Company, was com pleted at the Jackson City Hall last week. The sale of the city’s gas system to Atlanta Gas Light Co. was agreed upon several weeks ago. The new owners plan to construct or rent a sales and collections office in Jackson in the near future. Mrs. Powell is top teacher Willowdean Wims Powell has been awarded the title of Butts County “Teacher of the Year.” Mrs. Powell teaches fifth grade students at Henderson Elementary School. She has been teaching for 21 years. Henry Liquor confiscated from clubs Two private clubs in McDonough received citations last week from the Georgia Revenue Department Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Unit. The citations were for possessing liquor in establishments licensed to possess and sell beer only. Roy Stancil, regional supervisor of the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Unit, said liquor had been confiscated from Lamar’s Sportsman Club Incorporated and the Henry County Moose Lodge. McDonough’s millage lowered McDonough’s mayor-council unanimously voted Tuesday to lower the 1977 millage for the City of McDonough to 7.0 mills, a .3 reduction from last year. The mayor-council felt the city could operate within the amount of dollars the reduced millage would bring in since the 1977 digest ran the same as last year’s. Fayette Fayetteville receives grant The City of Fayetteville has been awarded a grant in the amount of $2,146,862 for construction of a wastewater treatment and transportation facility plant. Voting districts may be split Fayette County Probate Judge Jimmy White has in dicated his office hopes to change the number of voting districts from 9 to 11, splitting the Fayetteville and Shakerag Districts. Georgia law requires districts to be divided when the number of registered voters reaches 2,000, or when prospective voters are still standing in line more than one hour after polls close. The budget for roads shows an in crease over the 1977 total of $612,001. The cost of gravel today amounts to $5 a ton. Some 5 years ago, the same gravel was selling for $1 a ton. The commissioners plan to make a start at renovating the county jail. The proposed budget amounts to $60,350 over last year’s $10,650. They intend to do the work piecemeal. Other renovation of the courthouse annex and the comprehensive mental health center in the old post office building will be funded with federal grants. The annex will be completed with a grant of $316,000 and the mental health center will be financed with a $302,328 federal grant. Leonard explained the adoption procedure the county commissioners followed this year to get to this stage of making a budget for fiscal year 1978. Wprk on the budget began in July when each county department made requisitions for their operational costs. Compton gets life plus 45 PICKENS, S.C. (AP) - A sentence of life plus 45 years in prison was given James Com pton Friday after he pleaded guilty to the sexual mutilation of a Clemson University stu dent. Special Circuit Judge John Gentry sentenced Compton, 25, of Ga., at an ar raignment after attorneys on both sides said Compton and his brother Marty, 18, were under the influence of alcohol and marijuana when the attack oc curred on Milton Cronheim 111. The younger brother also is charged in the attack. The attorneys said Cronheim had been dating Compton’s es tranged wife for several months before the attack. Religious services Religious services will be held at the Griffin-Spalding County Hospital on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The services will be held in the Hunt Memorial Chapel for patients, their families and hospital staff. The first of 2 public meetings was held for the public’s input and the draft was returned to the commissioners to take into consideration whatever changes may have been deemed necessary. The draft again was reviewed by the commissioners and the elected officials and department heads. Cuts were made where necessary and the proposed budget is ready for its second public hearing before adoption. After 30 days the commissioners will publish a notice of the availability of the budget to the public. Leonard said the county made very good use of the minicomputer in comparing the budgets of each department over the past 3 years. He said that kind of work takes a lot of staff time and had it been done by hand, the process would have required much longer. down the sentences. Compton received 25 years for armed robbery and 20 years for assault and battery with intent to kill to run consecutively. He also was given a 10-year sentence for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. That sentence will run concurrently with the others. The life sentence was given on a charge of burglary. Compton initially had refused to waive his extradition rights, but Georgia Gov. George Bus bee signed papers ordering ex tradition, and Compton was brought to Pickens County late Thursday and scheduled for ar raignment Friday. Marty Compton had waived extradition earlier and was being held in the Pickens Coun ty Jail under 75,000 bond. The solicitor’s office said he will probably be arraigned later this month. Cronheim and his roommate, Bryan J. Doyle, of Pittsfield, Mass., were attacked at their off-campus apartment by two men wearing hoods.
