The Bulldogs were inside one yard line when the game ended. “I hope the fact that we’re out of the running doesn’t effect our play tonight,” Coach Max Dowis said this morning. The coach said Griffin had had a good week on the practice field and appeared ready to play a good game. This desire might reflect greed, since he has had four already. The current Hatfield superstar, Harvey, has rushed for more than 1,500 yards and scored 165 points this year, the latest coming in Cartersville’s 30-0 high school football victory Friday over Cass. “He was just in the footsteps of Hal (Hatfield) last year, but this year he’s taken the initiative to be the leader,” said Barge. “He’s gotten no outside yardage. He comes right straight ahead where it’s the toughest. He gives the offensive line credit for blocking well.” Besides Harvey and Hal, who gained more than 3,000 yards in three seasons, Barge also coached Hank, the eldest Hatfield, and now coaches both Harvey and younger brother Hoyt, a sophomore. Harvey Hatfield, a 5-foot-9,178-pound junior, rushed for touchdowns of 7 and 11 yards and kicked three extra point conversions in Cartersville’s shutout of Cass. The Purple Hurricanes also got scores from Ken Rhodes and Charles Adams. Lee Smith and Kevin Jackson tackled the Cass quarterback for a safety. The victory left Cartersville at 7-3 with the subregion BAWest crown and a chance to compete in the playoffs. Cass is now 0-9.
