Rains came and so did Taylor County It was a night Pike fans will remember • It was a night the Pike County Pirates and the 100 or so fans will remember for a long time. The rains came and so did Taylor County’s Mel Wilcher. Wilcher scored one touch down in the first quarter and added three others in the third and fourth quarters Friday night as Taylor County defeated Pike County 38-0 on Pike’s home turf in Zebulon. Wilcher also scored a couple of extra points. Taylor County Tailback Al Ford took care of the other ’77 season open 23 deer reported killed in Spalding last year Deer season opened today in Spalding and surrounding counties and many hunters were up and in the field at the crack of dawn. The Game and Fish Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources says 23 deer were reported killed in Spalding County last year. This is the number of deer reported and does not include those killed and not reported. The actual kill was probably much higher. Joe Kerz of the Game and Fish Division says it is beneficial to the hunter to tag his deer and report the kill to the department. The reported kill figures are used in helping to deter mine the number of days in the season and helps the department determine the sex ratio of the harvest in establishing either sex hunt days. The Georgia hunting law states that the hunter must tag a killed deer before moving the carcus. It also states that the tag should be properly punched and the county and date filled in. Kerz urged those hunters who have killed deer and not reported the kill to the department in the past to do so.. “Even if they don’t tag the deer in the field, they should send the tag to us. This is being done for the benefit of the hunter and not for our benefit.” Kerz says from reports received by the Game and Fish Division, there are indications of an increase in the deer population in Spalding County this year. There are also indications of an increase in the number of deer in Braves draft Torrez, Forster, Medich and Grimsley ATLANTA (AP) — New York Yankees World Series pitching star Mike Torrez was the Atlanta Braves’ first round draft choice in Friday’s major league free-agent baseball draft. The 31-year-old righthander was one of four pitchers chosen by Atlanta, whose pitching staff was one of the worst in the major leagues last season. Torrez won two Wolrd Series games and finished the regular season with a record of 17-13 and an earned run average of 3.91. He also was chosen in the first round by San Diego, Boston and Kansas City. Mrs. Gerard, a 40-year-old blonde who lives with her hus band in Muttontown, N.Y., hired attorney Michael Karl on Friday and planned to meet with him today and discuss the part she will—or will not—play in the intercontinental melo drama. Mrs. Gerard will contest pub lished reports that she went to Uruguay in May in order to find a horse who resembled Cinzano, for which her husband was acting as purchasing agent, her attorney said. Georgia law requires deer hunters to wear 500 inches of daylight florescent above the waist for their protection. The deer season in Spalding and surrounding counties is split and will be open through Dec. 3. The second part of the season opens Dec. 26 and closes on Jan. 2. Sunday hunting is permitted in the state if the hunter has the permission of the property owner. Hunting deer with dogs is not permitted in middle Georgia, but is permitted in some South Georgia counties. Georgia law requires the deer hunter to have a big game license in addition to a regular hunting license. Deer tags are attached to the big game license. Hunters do not have to have a license or big game license to hunt on their own property and may obtain complimentary tags from the Department of Natural Resources. Hunters hunting on the land of others should have permission of the owner before hunting on the land. Hunting clubs have leased the hunting rights on much of the uncultivated land in this area.
