Derek Jacobi plays the title role in "I, Claudius,” the 13-part adaptation of Robert Graves’ best-selling novels which airs on Master piece Theatre nationally beginning Sunday, Nov. 6, at 9 p.m., ET) on PBS. The intrigue that was Rome Robert Graves’ novel, "I, Claudius,” comes to PBS this fall in a 13-episode dramatization. The Lon don Times called the novel an 'elaborate picture of Roman life in its brilliance and decadence,” and the New York Times said it was 'one of the really remarkable books of our day, a novel of learning and imagination, for tunately conceived and brilliantly executed.” The television series, when it was shown in Eng land, received similar acclaim: the newspapers were enthusiastic and the series won eight awards. 1, Claudius* is the story of a family who ruled Rome at a time when Rome ruled the world. Its director, Herbert Wise, feels it’s also a story about today. The first Caesar in the series is Caesar Augustus (Brian Blessed). Augustus is portrayed as a man of contradictions: an able po litical leader who couldn’t control his own family. Blessed says, T loved him ...A very complex charac ter, a tolerant man who’s a lesson to all the leaders today. But his intolerance of family deeds was astro nomical ... He was terrify ingly tough. "But she was totally evil - Claudius’ plotting grandmother, the mother of Rome, the spi der at the center of the intrigue.” After Augustus’ death, Livia sees to it that her son Tiberius (George Baker) gets the throne. Tiberius is a loutish man who’d rather stay a general, but he’s no match for Livia, and his court paves the way for Caligula (John Hurt). Caligula is the third Cae sar of the story. He was a madman who believed he was a god, married his sister, and turned the pal ace into a brothel. This brings the story back to Claudius: despised by the Caesars, unloved by his mother (Margaret Tyzack), he has concealed an extraordinary intelli gence within his twisted body. A careful observer, he has used his intelligence to survive and become a benevolent dictator. It is he who has the last word and the last laugh when he decides, as emperor, to let Rome go to the hell it so richly deserves. ter Sellers, 1970. 0 _ MOVIE: 'Knife in the Water" Psychologi cal drama of three peo ple locked together on a small boat.
