Gunman described as depressed
by unemployment, marital woes
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A
former Internal Revenue Serv
ice auditor accused of wounding
10 persons in a citywide
shooting spree was said to be
depressed by unemployment
and marital problems.
Four of the wounded were in
critical condition today and
paralyzed, maybe per
manently, from spinal wounds,
doctors aid.
Carlos Poree, 35, had been
acting differently since last
Dec. 17, when he was fired from
his $19,332-a-year government
job, said his mother-inlaw,
Dorothy Broussard. The IRS
will not say why Poree was
fired.
Three weeks ago Poree’s
wife, Diane, 34, left him.
Diane and her father, Alvin
Broussard, 61, were the first
victims Monday. Shot at Brous
sard’s house in a quiet section of
uptown New Orleans near
Tulane University, both are
partially paralyzed with
wounds of the neck.
Police said that after Poree
shot them, he drove three miles
to midcity and gunned down
eight apparent strangers.
Poree was booked with 10
counts of attempted murder,
one count of resisting arrest,
three counts of simple battery
on police officers and one count
of armed robbery — the alleged
theft of a car at gunpoint.
Poree was hospitalized with
serious eye injuries and several
facial cuts suffered in a scuffle
with police at the city jail.
Police Sgt. Tony Buonagura
said Poree attacked an officer
and that Poree’s face hit the
floor in the ensuing fight.

Bush comes
to defense
of Helms
ATLANTA (AP) — Former
CIA Director Richard Helms
should not have been prose
cuted for lying under oath to a
Senate committee, his succes
sor at the agency said Monday.
George Bush, who served as
CIA chief at the end of Gerald
Ford’s presidential term, told
an Atlanta civic club that Helms
should not have been
prosecuted for “security rea
sons.” Bush refused to elabo
rate on that statement.
Helms, who was sentenced to
one year on probation and fined
$2,000 in connection with his
Senate testimony, has said his
refusal to disclose information
to the committee was based on
“national security.”
Helms allegedly misled the
committee about the ClA’s in
volvement in Chile during the
regime of Salvador Allende,
who died after his government
eventually was overthrown by a
military faction.
Although Bush said he dis
approved of prosecution of
Helms by the Carter adminis
tration, he conceded that the
president had “inherited a very
difficult situation.”
Helms’ fine and suspended
sentence “appears to have been
a very moderate” solution to a
sensitive problem, said Bush,
who now is a businessman in
Texas.

TV insanity
Zamora sentenced to life
MIAMI (AP) — Ronny Za
mora, who was defended in a
murder trial on grounds that
television violence drove him
insane, stood silent before the
TV cameras that recorded his
sentencing to life in prison.
Judge Paul Baker brushed
aside sentencing advice from
famed psychiatrist Karl Men
ninger and others on Monday as
he sentenced the 15-year-old to a
minimum 25 years in jail.
Defense attorney Ellis Rubin,
in his final plea for leniency for
Zamora, waved psychiatric re
ports and even petitions from
schoolmates in front of Baker.
Baker interrupted, saying:
“I’ve even had a letter from Dr.
Karl Menninger. But it is not
their business. Unfortunately, it
is mine.”
Zamora’s trial and sentencing
were open to television and still
camera coverage under a one
year experiment ordered by the
Florida Supreme Court.
Before sentencing the teen
ager in the murder of his 83-
year-old neighbor, Elinor Hag
gart, Baker offered Zamora a
chance to make a statement to
the court. But Zamora stood si
lent and the judge went ahead
with sentencing.
Baker said Zamora should be
placed in a “youthful offender
facility” where he could receive
psychiatric help. Rubin had
pleaded that Zamora was
“sick” and “suicidal” and
should not go to an adult prison.
Watching impassively was
Darrell Agrella, 15, who faces a
separate trial on the same
charge. Agrella’s lawyer is
challenging the grand jury se
lection system in the other case.
“He didn’t say a word. It was
just bang, bang!” said Joyce
Saylan, a secretary who was
headed out to lunch with her
young son when the gunman
brushed past her on the way in
side.
“The guy walked in the door,
went down the hall and started
shooting ... Everybody thought
it was a joke with a cap pistol
because it was so quick. Then
everybody started screaming,"
she said.
Two plainclothes policemen
driving nearby heard the shots,
stopped their car, jumped out
and ordered Poree to ‘ ‘Freeze! ”
The officers said Poree
surrendered peacefully.
and has caused a one-third re
duction in business, warehouse
manager Tony Leßoy said.
Gold Kist was awarded the
management contract in Au
gust when Billy Carter, who had
served as manager, resigned to
give himself more time for
personal appearances.
The president’s son Chip
moved back to Plains from
Washington to help run the
business several months ago,
but his activities were restrict
ed shortly after he returned
when he fell off of a peanut
truck and broke his foot.

During the trial Rubin as
serted that the teen-ager lost his
ability to judge right from

lost in a make-believe world

Rubin attempted to have the
case thrown out Monday on
several points. He said that the

5 persons

ATLANTA (AP) - Five per
sons, including an unsuccessful
candidate for Cobb County
sheriff, have been arrested on
gambling charges in three met
ropolitan Atlanta counties, po
lice said Monday.
Gambling records, money
and other gambling equipment
were seized in the raids, which
occurred Sunday in Cobb, De-
Kalb and Gwinnett counties, po
lice said.
Billy Jack Little, who ran un
successfully for the Cobb sher
iff’s post in 1976, was charged
with gambling, police said.
Four other persons were ar
rested on a variety of charges,
including commercial gambling
and communicating gambling
information, police said.
The raids followed a four-week
investigation into bookmaking
for athletic events, officers
said.
‘Oh Calcutta’
charges
dismissed
ATLANTA (AP) - A state
court judge has dismissed pub
lic indecency charges against
nine cast members of “Oh!
Calcutta!,” but declined to rule
on the constitutionality of Ful
ton County’s indecency laws.
Judge William H. Alexander
ruled Monday that there was
not enough probable cause to
hold the five men and four
women for trial.
They were arrested at the
Peachtree Playhouse by Fulton
County Solicitor General Hinson
McAuliffe’s agents and deputy
sheriffs after the first of Fri
day’s two performances. The
actors were released on SI,OOO
bond each.
The play —a collection of
sketches and songs intended as
a humorous look at sexual atti
tudes and practices in which, at
times, the actors appear on
stage nude — was allowed to
complete its run Saturday and
Sunday in an agreement be
tween authorities and the play’s
producers.
McAuliffe’s office has
cracked down recently on what
it considers obscene material.
Now free on bond, Larry Flynt,
publisher of Hustler and Chic
magazines, was arrested in At
lanta in September and charged
with selling obscene material.
Investigator Jim Hartley tes
tified at the hearing that he
“could not see how any normal
person could see any value in
the play,” but the cast’s attor
ney, J. Kirk Quillian, attacked
the constitutionality of the
county’s indecency law.
tic, while not a good one, was
not grounds to throw out the
case.
After the sentencing Rubin
said he had received permission
from the parents to bring a
lawsuit against the three major
television networks. He said he
hoped to show the effect
television violence has on
children.
“We feel we will be able to
prove the networks are respon
sible for inducing young people
to adopt violence as away of
life,” he said.
