Page 8 — Griffin Daily News Tuesday, Novembers, 1977 lowa to photograph for energy leaks By WILLIAM L. EBERLINE Associated Press Writer DES MOINES, lowa (AP) - Some 800 lowa cities will have their pictures taken from the air this winter to determine which homeowners are trying to heat the whole outdoors. The project, dubbed “Oper ation Sky Scan,” is being spon sored by the state’s investor owned electric and gas utilities as part of an energy con servation campaign. “This is the first program of its kind ever undertaken on a statewide basis,” said John M. Lewis, president of the lowa Utility Association. “We hope to get started with in a matter of weeks — probably by Nov. 15.” The utility firms have con tracted with Texas In struments, Inc., of Dallas to shoot infrared aerial pictures of communities they serve. Where an ordinary camera produces pictures of light re flecting from the surface of the photo subject, an infrared cam era reacts to heat radiation. When infrared photos of a city are taken from the air at night, buildings show up in varying shades of gray — pale gray if the building is giving off a lot of heat, darker gray if less heat is being lost. Many private consultants around the country are using the technique, called ther mography, to help consumers and business executives learn where their insulation is in sufficient. The cost ranges from $25 to SIOO, depending on the extent of the inspection and re port. In addition, individual utili ties in other states are running thermography programs. estimates that the pro gram will cost the lowa utilities about $460,000 to scan 800 lowa communities. “The photos will become the property of the the utility serving each community,” said. “Each utility com pany will arrange for any inter ested homeowner to see how much heat is being lost from his home. “The home owner may want to put in more insulation to cut down on heat loss and reduce his utility bills. “There’s nothing compulsory about it, but we think enough homeowners will want to do something about it to achieve a significant saving in energy. The saving is year round, of course, because better in sulation means less energy is needed to cool the house in the summer as well as heat it in winter." The weatherman has to coop erate before a sky scan can be done, Lewis said. The tempera ture has to be under 35 degrees, the sky clear and roofs free of snow for the scanner to work. Rev. Reservoir dam condition reported as excellent Spalding County people and those living in neighboring counties who live on Head’s Creek and the Flint River south of the city of Griffin reservoir have been assured the dam at the reservoir is in excellent condition. Harry Simmons, superin tendent of the Water Depart ment, said the dam at the reservoir has steel pilings reinforcing it. Simmons also said the Griffin area has had rainfall heavier than that of the past few days and the dam withstood the rainfall then. He also said there has been no problem with the dam and he does not expect any. The dam at Toccoa Falls that broke Sunday backed an 80-acre lake. Varnadoe, promoted to air man recently completed technical training at Sheppard AFB, Tex., and is now assigned l lake. The heavy rains caused the level in the reservoir and the Flint River to rise, but did not pose any danger to life. Simmons also said the dam in the Flint River is supported by steel. The city of Griffin receives its water from the river and the reservoir. Thirty-seven people were killed when the dam at the Kelly Barnes Lake broke and a wall of water 30-feet high roared through Toccoa Bible College and the Toccoa Falls com munity. “As far as I know, we do not have any farm dams in Spalding County in any danger,” H. D. “Shorty” Garrison of the Soil Con servation Service said. “If anyone in our area has a Happy birthday! Garrison said dams con structed under the supervision of the Soil Conservation Service were designed to handle the water flow from the area and any amount of rainfall. “Extra precautions are taken where a dam is constructed above a road or where they would be any danger to people downstream in the case of breakage,” he said. “We have very few dams in our county that would pose any danger to lives. The largest farm pond we have in the county is 35 acres, nothing like the size of the one where the dam broke near Toccoa,” he said. Garrison said farmers are in charge of their own ponds and dams and generally want to keep them in good condition because of their investment in construction of the pond and dam. Some of the old dams may have defective pipes, but Garrison feels none of these would cause breakage of the dams. ■Your |Go°d keigHßor DICK HYATT 523 East Taylor St. Phone 227-2188 ■ See him lor all your family ■ insurance needs.
