Looking at gall stones

DEAR DR. LAMB - Will
all gall stones show up on X
rays? I had my gall bladder
removed a year ago. A year
has passed since then and I
have lots of pain in the area
where the gall bladder was.
I have had X rays and no
stones show up.
1 have heard if one has
stones that aren’t removed
they can cause cancer. Is
there any other way except
by X ray that they can locate
gall stones?
DEAR READER — In gen
eral, there are two types of
gall stones but there can be
mixtures of materials that
form stones. The stones
formed chiefly from choles
terol are not opaque on X
rays. That is why a person
takes gall bladder dye be
fore a gall bladder examina
tion.
The dye is opaque and
concentrates inside the gall
bladder. The transparent
cholesterol stones then stand
out from the solid appearing
dye and can be seen.
The stones made from bile
pigment are small, hard
stones that are visible on X
rays without dye and some
stones contain other miner
als that make them visible.
The opaque stones can be
seen by X ray even if they
are in the bile system after
the gall bladder has been
removed, and if you inject
opaque material the others
can be seen as well. There
are techniques to visualize
by X ray the entire bilary
tree.
Discomfort from abnor
mal drainage of the bile may
still be present after an
operation. Then there is that
frequent problem that the
pain the patient was both
ered with may not have been
caused by the gall stones at
all, even if stones were pres
ent. The main offender here
is pain in the colon, in the
upper right abdomen over

Oxalic acid removes rust

POLLY’S PROBLEM
DEAR POLLY—For the past few months my
sheets and towels have been spotted with rust after
laundering. Is there something I can do to prevent
this and something else I can use to remove it?
I use a sponge in the bathroom as a soap dish and at
the end of the day there is enough soap in the sponge
to launder my nylons and or wash out the sink.
I use a vegetable brush to clean off graters and
colanders and also to remove corn silks from corn on
the cob.— LEE.
DEAR LEE—Carefully examine your washer as
there may be something in it that causes these rust
spots. To remove such stains from washable fabrics
wash in warm suds, rinse well and if stain persists
use a 5 percent oxalic acid solution for a fifteen
minute soaking. Caution - this is poison and should
be handled with extreme care. Rinse three times
and if needed a few drops of household ammonia can
be added to the last rinse. The proportion of oxalic
acid to water is one teaspoon crystals to a cup of
water.
Dampening such spots and then applying lemon
juice and salt may also do the job. Put in the sun to
dry and rinse well. - POLLY.
DEAR POLLY—One of the readers wanted to know what
she could do to make the slippery soles on her shoes less
slippery. Being notorious for breaking bones I have to be
very careful and when I buy a pair of shoes with plastic
soles I smear on that milky white all-purpose glue and then
sprinkle table salt on it. When dry this gives a rough
surface. To avoid sliding off sling back pumps I put a piece
of moleskin on the inner sole under the heel. Hope this

DEAR POLLY—I used to be one of those ladies who are
constantly having to dig in the drawer or keep folding
socks for the men in the family. Now I put a rubber band
around a pair of socks after they have been folded once so
they are stacked neatly and there is no more hunting for
socks that may be buried under everything else. Also they
do not get so stretched out of shape. —CAROLYN.

the liver area. A spastic
colon often causes pain in
this area whether or not the
person has gall stones. When
the gall stones are seen on X
ray, it is then assumed that
they are the cause of the
pain -which may not be the
case at all.
In such a case, after the
gall stones are removed the
spastic colon persists and
the pain in the upper right
abdomen persists too. The
patient may think it is be
cause the gall bladder dis
ease has not been cured, but
the truth may be the gall
bladder never had anything
to do with the pain.
That doesn't mean the gall
bladder should not have
removed. The weight of evi
dence is in favor of remov
ing a diseased gall bladder if
you have a good surgeon
available and are otherwise
in good health and unlikely
to have complications from
surgery. I might add that all
the surgeons I know tell me
they are very good, but some
of them seem to have better
results than others.

plaints, you may need to go
on a program to improve
your colon function, includ
ing increasing the cereal
bulk in your diet.
There is an increased inci
dence of cancer of gall
bladders with stones. Since
yours has been removed, I
think you don't need to
worry about that.
