way of explanationMorning Newt, Tuesday.
The above does injustice to the foreman of this of-
fice^oa a repetition of the facts givon personally to
the editors of the Republican and the News, on Mon-
day niorning, will demonstrate.
' It>ii proper to say that tho arrangement bo-
tween the Telegraph Company and the associated
prtsii bf this city, is such that all original dispatches
intended for publication are sent to one or the other
6f tiye offioM to be oopled, and a copy sent to each of
the others. The paper commonly used by the tele
graph Offlee, as all are aware, has a printed heading
with the rates of charges, Ac., and containing blanks
for the dates and address, and when sent out is placed
in ah envelope under seal. In thla way, and no other,
up to Sunday night lost, have original dispatches been
usukliy furnished to the Georgian office. The paper
in use by the newspaper offices, in making copies,
usually Is yellow tissue, used in oonnection with a
manifold writer, yet in several instances ordinary
foolscap, bib-been used by this offlee instead, and
copies ot dispatches have been received by us, written
on the some style and quality or paper.
On. Sunday night the dispatch in question was
handed in written on a half sheet or ordinary fools
cap paper, without heading or date, or without being
incldied fin ah envelope, with no distinguishing mark'
whatever to indicate that it was an original dispatch,
or that it was to be copied for the other papers; and
sumach was the attention of the foreman, for the
^moment, engrossed in other duties, that he did not
“even notice the form or features of the person deliver
ing the dispatch—so that there was nothing to iden-
Uiy it with him as an original one, and as matter of
coiine taking it for a copy, used it as such.
Wedeem this-.a complete refutation of tho charge
of negligence on his part, as made by the Republican,
and inadvertence, os alleged by the Morning News,
No apology b necessary to our readers for this de
tailed explanation and defence, as it is alike our duty
and pleasure to defend one whoso services are faith
fully rendered and fully appreciated, against so un-

several large sugar plantations now in Wharton
county. Specimens of Bugar raised on these, that we
Baw fast winter, were of tbo best description. Wo
have before had occasion to nlludo to the extraordin
ary fertility of this lower country, and the more we
soo of it, the more do we feel bound to ro-itorato that
its equal cannot he found in so largo a body in tbo
world. Intelligent industry is all that is required to
the most successful cultivation.
The Austin Stato Gazette, of tho 26th ult., has tho
following paragraph:
We learn from ono of our citizens who has recently

tween Sandy Creek, which empties into tho Colorado
abont oppoBito Hamilton's Yalloy, to the Concho, that
rich deposits of gold have been found on all the
streams, and in several places rich veins of ore have
been found in the hill sides. Already a considerable
number of hands are at work at various points, and
making fair wages by the uso of hand-rockera. The
richest doposits, wo understand, are found in tho beds
of branches and ravines.

with leaves. In the front of the cave there was a
small aperture, as if intended to admit light.
There was nothing found in tho cave but an ordina

of the ground. The cave was located in the midst of
a very large tract of woodland, and remote from any
dwelling orpubllo road. To whom does this myste

from society, or did it belong to Borne band of plun

place! Most likely the latter. Tho boards from
which the door is constructed, and even the hinges,
we learn, are identified as belonging to a poraou in
that vicinity, from whom they had been stolen. A

the neighborhood, and wore doubtless stolen to be

New Orleans Races.
Union Course^—Quite a large crowd were in at
tendance yesterday to witness the race, at milo heats,
between Wade Hampton and Regent. The former
was the favorite both in town anu on the coarse, at
two to one. The old betters were doomed io fall, and
with but little show for their money, as Wade, after
running for about half a mile, concluded to draw out,
and accordingly, on rounding the lower turn, ho dis
appeared in the blackberry bushes on the outside of
the track, having leaped the fence. Regent, from
this out. bad it all his own way, coming to the stand
in a gallop.

Action of Guano on Tobacco^
A subscriber furnishes the editor of the Richmond
-Etijruiw with tho following interesting letter, rela
tive to tho importance of guano iu raising heavy
crops of tobacco. Tho letter, at this season particu
larly cannot be otherwise than interesting to all grow
ers of tobacco:
Cumberland, Feb. 8, 1863.
My Dear Sir: Yonrs of the 10th ult. did not reach
me till last Saturday, in conBequcnco of having been
direcud to Farmville, instead of Stony Point Mills,
and I takq the earliest opportunity to reply to it.
My experiment in growing such a heavy crop of
tobacco lost yew, has attracted a great deal of atten
tion, and I take pleasure in detailing it for the benefit
of tho planting intere»t of the State. Tho ground was
pretty liberally dressed with home-made manures,
from ray stables, form-pen* and pits, as I think ought
always to bo done, if we would grow tobacco profita
bly. When I was going to bed the land for hilling,
ortubbing down, which I prefer, I sowed on each
acre the Pillowing mixture: 2 bushel* sifted Peruvian
Gnano, weighing, I Judge, about one hundred pounds,
intimately mixed with ono bushel ground alum salt.
I thon mixed 2£ bushels Mexican Guano—weighing,.
suppose, ono hundred and sixty or one hundred and
seventy pounds—and 1J bushels Kcttlewell’s Mixture
of Potash and Plaster, or about one hundred and fifty
or ono hundred and sixty pounds, and shovelled them
all well together, and sowed the mixture broadcast,
Tho cost of the whole was about $6.25 per acre. The
crop that was planted in good time—I was scarce of
plants, and the seasons very difficult—I am sure, gave
mo two thousand pounds per acre. The tobacco was
topped from eighteen to twenty-five leaves, and
ripened remarkably well to the top leaf, without
firing. Tho tobacco was cultivated tor the manufac
turers, and is of very fine quality, and remarkably
sweet.
My reasons for this mode of cnltivation are few
and simple. Our old lands in this region, and, I
doubt not generally in middle Virginia, are more de
ficient in phosphates and potash than any other of
the mineral manures; and the tobacco plant must
have these elements in order to ripen it well. The
Peruvian Guano, haa but a small part of its value in
phosphates—only about one-sixth, and fivo-slxths of
its money value, or near $40 to tho ton, in ammonia,
which powerfully stimulates tho growth of tobacco,
without causing It to r}P e n, or without giving it the
healthy growth which will secure it against firing.
The Mexican Gnano is the richest that has been
brought to the country in phosphates, containing 67
to 60 per cent., and only one to two per cent of am
monia. Consequently abont five-sixths of its money
valae is in the pnosplmtei, and about one-sixth in tbe
ammonia. This suggested the idea of mixing the
two. Tbe salt was pat with the Peruvian to fix the
ammonia, and to furnish the muriates and the soda.
Bnt the tobacco plant specially needs potash, espe
cially in its ripening process—the onter coat of the
stalk and the Btems being formed principally of a Bile-
date of potash. Thus yon see, at a glance, what I
aimed to accomplish by my mixture.
The success was beyond ray expectations, It was
the heaviest crop of tobacco I ever saw—and so said
every one who saw it.
The Mexican Gnano can be had at Baltimore, at
$25 per ton of 2240 pounds. Sterling and Ahrens
deals in it. The Potash and Plaster, Mr. Kettle well,
of Baltimore, prepares and soils at $2.50 per barrel, of
about 320 pounds.
I lost, I may say, no tobacco by fire, while every
one of my neighbors had to cut their crops for fire.
‘ ‘ igh regard, yonrs very truly,
J. S. Arhibtiad.
A New Wheat.—A Very singular discovery has
lately been mado in France, by M. Fabre, a gardener
of Ayde. Tho herb segilops, heretofore considered
worse than useless, grows abnndantly on tbe shores
of the Mediterranean. It produces a species of grain
resembling wheat in form, nut much smaller. In the
year 1830 M. Fabre sowed a quantity of this grain,
and he found tbe produce bore a close affinity to
wheat; that produce he cowed the next year, and th<
yield.waa still more like wheat. He went on sowini
the produce of each year the succeeding year, anti
he has now succeeded in getting as fine a crop of
ITqaailtyazc*~
wheat and of os goodfanalityascan be wished for.
