The vote to censure the Government in the foil of Kan was pressed to a division and lost by a vote of 127 majority. No immediate dis solution of Parliament is apprehended. Paris letters say that circumstances are likely to arise to prevent the allies quitting the Prin cipalities at the time specified in the treaty The Czar has ordered the immediate dimnd- ment of threo hundred and fifty thousand troops. Humors of dreadful outbreaking massacres at Damascus and AUipo are rife. Terrible Accident* Nbw York, May 10*—The outward bound passengers by the steamship George Law, met with a terrible accident on the Panama Railroad It is rumored that a large number of persons were killed and wounded. Arrival of the Empire City. New Orleans, May 14.—The Empire City has arrived. Bhe brings no news of impor tance, save the ramor that Schlessinger has re captured Carthagena and declares it a free port The Oregon war continues. A .body of regu lars had been defeated by the Indians at Rogue River, and 28 of them killed. Cassades had been captured by the Indians and destroyed by fire, and several of the residents massacred. It was reported that a thousand Indians were ap proaching Dallas from the North. Several other lights had occurred, hut the whites were gen erally victorious. In Washington Territory the Indians were breaking out upon tho settlements in every di rection. Tbe latest advices state that Col. D. Buchan an had defeated the Indians at Rogue River, and relieved the citizens in that vicinity. New York Markets* New York, May 16.—Tbe cotton market is dull and depressed. The sales to-day amount to 500 bales. Middling Uplands quoted at 10|c. Sterling exchange is easier. From Washington. ■Washington, May 15. President Pierce's message relative to Nic araguan afihirs, was received to-day. It explains aud defends tbe recognition of the Nicaraguan minister on tho grounds that the exigen cies of the public service render establish ment of diplomatic relations with that country iinperitive. The President lias signed the Bill granting public land in aid of the construction of Rail roads in Iowa. Several Bills granting pub lic lauds in uid of Southern Railroads will follow. Errata.—In the communication addressed to the Republican, by “M," published in our morn ing editiou, a portion of the sentence commenc ing in the thirty-second Uae of the second para graph was omittted. It should have read thus: “I knew the time would come when he would he appreciated—when his glory and fame would be Ids country’s; hut I did not think that time would come soon enough to be used by his an cient foes to support the pretensions of a traitor to his memory, in the person of hla nephew." In the 28th line of the same paragraph, “rare ly" should read really. Mayor's Court.—Benjamin Alleu; improper conduct, drunkenness in the street near the mar ket; also, accused of advocating and dissemina ting abolition principles in tbe city. Bent to jail to await further examination. Washington Correspondence. Washington, May 13. Mr. J. Olancy Jones, of Pa., to duy replied to the speech of his colleague, Mr. Fuller, do* llvered on Saturday lust, wherein the political consistency of Mr. Buchauau was so serious ly assailed. He spoke well and forcibly of tho prouud political career of Pennsylvania, during the past thirty yearn, and of the important in. tiueuee exerted over her by her great and favor ite son. ne denounced as a forgery the resolu tion alleged by Mr.Fuller to have proceeded from Mr. Buchanan in 1818, in which the extension of slavery is deprecated. But this was a work of supererogation, for long nines their views, quite as antagonistic to slavery, were held by a large proportion of the leading statesmen of Vir ginia. Mr. Fuller, in reply, attempted to fasten upon Mr. Buchanan not ouly tiie odium of an autag. onism to tho interest of the South, but of per fect symputhy with tho present 'American" movomeut. This latter was attempted to he proved by quotations IVora the orations and wri tings or Mr. Buchanan, from 1815 up to the latest time. Mr. Fuller—for what object may by aud by appear—has illustrated himself in this mutter; hut I doubt that he lias damaged Mr. Uuclianau. The loug past and apocryphal antecedents of a man now standing firmly and erect upou nation al and conservative grouuds will not suffice to crash him in the South. The passage of the Deficiency Bill to-day has created much Joy, though the omission of the appropriation of three hundred thousand dol lars for the Water Works in tills District is greatly regretted. Tbe printing of two hundred and teu thou sand copies of the Agricultural Report was to day ordered on the part of the House, after some striugent opposition. Mr. Smith, of Virginia, one of the richest and ablest debaters iu tiie country, liad two strong arguments against the measure—strong, individually, hut somewhat neautralised when brought together. One was that the Report was not of any value, and tho other, that since everybody wanted it, and it waa impossible to print enough for everybody, therefore it would be more satisfactory to print no more than the usual number. The fact is, that there is a great flaw some where in the present mode of publishing the documents of the Government Common and unimportant documents, though printed in small numbers, may be liad for the asking, in this city, while those that are interesting and costly in the getting up, are always worth a price. To say that members of Congress sell any of the documents allotted to them in tbe distribution, would be to assert more than I know or believe; and yet it is certain, as I have said, that while those of little value may be picked up for noth ing, tbe better kind may be found only upon the shelves of tbe booksellers. A good regulation would be for every mem ber of the House or Representatives to form the nucleus of a public library in each of several divisions of his District by sending thither a distributive proportion of the documents allot ted to him. Thus would public libraries soon become general throughout the Union, not only of these books, bat of vast accumulations that would soon be added to them in all anch depots. Impartial. Georgia Railroad Convention. The Stockholders of tho Georgia Railroad and Banking Company met in annual conven tion Tuesday morning, and adjourned yesterday afternoon, after a very harmonious session. The labors of the Convention were confined exclusively to the consideration of the business and interests of the Company, as presented in the official reports, which represent the affairs of the Company in a most prosperous condition, as will be seen by tho following extract from the Report of the President and Directors: Gross Earnings of the road proper, for the year ending 31st March last $1,068,202 38 Charged with Ordinary Expenses, 617.852 24 Nett profit, deducting Ordinary The Fee paid by I he Emperor. We clip the following from tho Paris corres pondent of the London Medical Timet and Gazette :— “There is much said here about tbe fee given to Professor Paul Dubois for having attended the Empress. Many thought he was to have 200,000 francs, as his father, Antoine Dubois, had received 100,000 Tor having attended Marie i/rnlse, tho first Empress, when she gave birth to the King of Rome. The genorosity of tbe present Emperor being much greater than that of ills uucle, and tho value of everything being now about double of what It was in the begin- ning of this century, it was expected that Pro* tensor Paul Dubois should receive at least the double of what his father received. This extract shows most conclusively how ef ficiently the business of the company has been managed. The following Board of Directors for the ensu* ing year was elected: Directors, John Bones, H. Bowdre, J.W. Davies, B. H. Warren, G.T. Jackson, T. B. Phinizy, W. M. D’Antinac, A. Pouliaiu, T. N. Hamilton, A. Hull, S. Barnett, J. Cunningham, E.E. Jones, W. D. Convere, R. Peters, Geo. W. Evans. A dispatch to tiie following effect was pub lished by us some few days since:— “Advices received from Pernambuco repre* “seut tho ravages of the yellow fever us dread- “ (hi. 22,000 persons have already died.” The solution and bosltfof that dispatch is what we clip from tho Penntylvanian: Later from Pernambuco—Two Tliou- •anil Two Hundred Death* by Chole ra, 4m*. The subjoined letter was received on Batnrday morning by EUwood Walter, Secretary of the New York Board of Underwriters: Pernambuco, March 15,1850.—Dear Sir: We hand you the enclosed copy of our reports of 29th ult., which we now confirm. The bark Smithflold was coudemued by a survey of English captains, and sold at public auction for $2,700. She was purchased by her consignee, Wat. I/>tley. Jr., u son of the United States Consul here. Tho American captains at the time, in port, alter having recommended her proceeding home, refused to survey the ves sel guy further; her outfit and whaling utensils were also sold at auction, and her twenty bar rels of sperm oil have been shipped by the con veyance of the brig Inn, to Philadelphia. We purchased a foremast for the brig War* reu, Goddard, for $1,500, and she will probably proceed on her voyage uoxt week; 1,270 hides were discharged from her to unship the mast. Cholera is very prevalent in this city, uud tho deaths here from it, thus far, exceed 2,200 There is some yellow fever among the shipping The Brazilian steamer Marques de Olinda. was recently lost near Govana, not far from where the ship Shooting Star went ashore; she was a new iron steamer, on her first voyage, and built in England, where she is reported to lie insured for £30,000 sterling. If it had said that the disease was the plague, and the deaths twenty-two millions, we should uot have been surprised. Sulphuric Acid Barometer.—A- moug thp objects of scientific interest ac cumulating at the Smithsonian Institu tion, is a gigantic barometer, in which tbe varying pressure of the air indicated by a column of sulphuric acid, instead of ono of mercury os in the ordinary instrument. The mean elevation of the mercurial column is about thirty inches, while in this instrument it is upwards oi‘,t\vo hun dred and twenty inches. Hence the range is proportionally greater, and more minute fluctnations arc rendered perceptible. Sulphuric acid has been chosen as tiie liquid, because, at ordinary temperature it does uot give off vapor, which would fill the vacuum above or absorb air. Means are taken to prevent the absorption of moisture. The instru ment was constructed by James Greene, of New York, under the direction of the Institution. It is enclosed in a glazed case, and i9 placed in the northeast.staircase of the main building.—Washington Star. i A LUES’ SILK VESTS—The boat ill the J city. For Haiti by J. W. A mer chant, returning from Smyrna, traveling early in the morning saw a horse tied to nn olive tree, and several bags lying on the ground. Curiosity led him to exam ine them; he found that they all contained gold, and that sovcral of the pieces had nearly worked through the cloth. On looking around bo saw a “Janissary at some distance in a profound sleep "Friend,” said the merchant, on waking him, “ whose gold is that?” “I liavo tho chargoofit?” was tho reply. “But are you uot afraid to leave it there?" “No,” said the Janissary, it can’t run uway.” But travelers may steel it,” said Frank.
