EXTllAOltDlNARV INSURANCE

Extract of a falter from Norfolk, Va., dated Janu-i

Mbah-s. S. C. Hkhiumi & Co.. New York,
Gentlemen : On tho 7tb of December last Mcasi-,
Adams k Co.’s Express Office, situated in u lurge foui
story brick budding, in this city, was totally dastroy
ed by fire, and their safe remuined buried in the
burning rums until yesterday, when it wus dug out,
and even then found surrounded with live coals,
(and almost red-hot iron lay beside it.) tho bras.-
ornaments aud nobs melted oil'. We were witne.s.se-
to this firo; and if any thing cau resist such heat iti*
enough—fire could not bo hotter—it is a triumph
indeed. Wo enclose a certificate from several par
ties who saw it opened.
Yours, truly,
ROWLAND & BROS.
CKHTIKICXTE.
Norfolk, Va,, Juu. 17,1850.
By requestof Messrs. Rowland hi Bros., we this
day attended the opening of ouo of Herring’s Patent
Fire-proof Safes, which was iu the Uro or ;• ocembor
7, belonging to Messrs. Adams & Co.’s Express, and
found the papers and coutents iu a perfect state ol
preservation. It was, in our opinion, os severe a
test os could bo had. A largo four story building
entirely destroyed, and the sale remained tho whole
timo surrounded by flro, and subject to an intense
heat, for forty days before dug from tbo ruins.

Extract from a Norfolk paper :
Adams’ Sake.—One el Herring’s celebrated Fire
proof Safes was in Adams' Express OlUco when the
building was burned several weeks ago. It reiimlu-
id buried in tbo rubbish until Thursday, whoa it
was takon out. The fire, on tho occasion alluded lu,
was ono of the fiercest we ever saw, and when thu
chost was found, after a lapse of forty days, it \v a <
surrounded by embers, glowiug brightly. When
opeued, the papors, aud other articles it contaiiii-.i,
wore found to be sound aud generally in good condi
tion, thus utfording another proof of the security and
superiority of these safes. The ono alluded to uiuy
be seen at tho ware-house of Afessrs. Howland u
Bros., who are agouts for tbe makers. It shows
clearly tho evidences of its iucombuslibio qualities,
when its exterior was red-hot In tho burning fur
nace that roared around it, uud amid the embers
that glared around it for hours, days and weeks.
