Condition of Mb. Rukll.—Cincinnati, June
i.—Mr. Buell, editor of the Democratic Review,
I who was stabbed Thursday night while making
I a political speech beforo the Burnet House. Is
considered out of danger.
The Charleston Standard publishes an ex-
I tract from the Cincinnati Gazette, the Know
J Nothing organ of the stabbing of Mr. Buell. It
I also adds n few remarks of its own concerning
I Mr. Buell, which we give:
Au eye-witness of the affair informs the Com*
Imerciai that when he saw Mr. Buell he was ad*
Idresslng the crowd, and was very severe on ab-
Ljolltionbts and know nothin,gs, and that tbe sub
ject under discussion when the light commenced
kwas Know Nntliingism. The man who quar-
Ireled with him resented tho remarks about K.
I NVs, and disputed Buell’s assertion that he was
I an “Americun," ami persisted in intarrupting
I him, until Buell stooped from his position on
I the stone pile, and saying, “I'll settle this,”
struck the man, whereupon a general rush and
an exciting row ensued.
Buell seemed to have the lietter of his antag
onist, and it is presumed the man who stabbed
him was not the one with whom he had the
I tight. Buell did not know he was stabbed until
j washing himself in the gents' washroom at the
Burnet; some one saw the blood on his back.
He speedily became faint, and Drs. Woods and
Blackman being called, probed the wound, and
found that it had been inflicted with a large
knife, and was deep, having entered the lungs,
it was thought that he was bleeding inwardly,
and the wound, doubtless, a very dangerous one.
Mr. Buell is about 80 years old, and has been
umemberof the Indiana Legislature. After
leaving the Legislature he established the Wes
tern Democratic Review ut Indianapolis, but on
its curly death, went to Pittsburg, Pa., and
thence to Washington where he established the
“National Democratic Review,” of which he is
ut present the editor and proprietor. He is a
man of large frame and great strength, and the
Gazette says was probably the physical superior
of any man In the crowd in which the affray oc,
curred.

Arrival at Halifax of Troops from the
Chimb a.—Boston, Jnue Gth. Two regiraente oi
British troops, from the Crimea, arrived at Hali
fax on Monday, in the mammoth steamer Hima-
lava.
During a thunder storm on Wednesday last,
Luke Erie suddenly rose three feet at Oswego,

Danger to the South.—That dangerous in
dividual '‘Smith” is about to take the field (not
in person however.) The South mufct beware.
Gerrit Smith.—In his letter, offering $10,000
to equip n Northern Military organization for
Kansas, Gerrit Smtth say* ; ‘'Hitherto, 1 Lave
opposed the bloody abolition of slavery. But,
uuw, when it begius to march its conquerini
bauds into the Free State, I, and ten thousani
other peaceinen with me, are not only ready to
have it repulsed witii violeuce, but pursued even
unto death with violence.”
Mr. Smith, however .excuses himself from tak
ing any part in tbe actual fighting. He is wil
ling to pay others to do it, but says he is too old
and too ignoraut of arms himself to fight. We
thank this hoary incendiary for the frankness ot
his avowals. If anything can warn the South
of tho perils that arc before it. it will boBucli
