says of it:
“We have read this speech with no little sur
prise, after hearing so mucli of that Southern
denunciation, which it has been said provoked
Mr. Sumner's retort. As to tho political opin
ions of Mr. Butler, n« developed in tho speech,
it is unnecessary for us to say any thing. Apart
from these, no honest mind could help adinir-
.ng the genuine ability displayed, the patriotic
*entiinent evinced, and tho truly geutlemanly
tone and tenor ot the ontiro performance. We
have been ut a loss to discover in it anything
calculated ft* give personal ofi'utice to auy one,
unless it be iu the use of the terms “fauatic,”
'* fanaticism,” &c«, which have been so common
ly applied to that wing of the Frcc-Soilers re-
nted by Messrs. Sumner, Wilson, &c., as
y to warrant any particular outcry ut this
moment. In a word, the speech of Senator But
ter is a statesmanlike and practical production,
not a mere piece of rhetoric, though rising
sometimes,us will be seen, into the higher re
gions of oratory, and is, iu fact, a real, bona
fide argument of that description, which is so
addressed to the minds of men as to lie likely to
have its due cirect upon them.
