Questions mid Anawera,
We have only n moment for the Republican'.
anawera and queries. The former we pass by
altogether for the present.
The lint clause or question No. 1, we answer
yea; second, toe understand Ur. Buchanan In
his letter of acceptance, to say nothing about
the Oatend Polloy.
No. 3; yes.
No. 3; no.
No.4s ya, Ueanlng by "people of a terri
tory," what Ur. Buchanan says he means—to
wit t “people ofthe territory assembled In con
vention to form a State Constitution.”
To No. 5 wo reply that whether Ur. Buchan'
an In 1644 reluctantly agreed to tho annexa
tion of Texas, and for the reasons assigned by
the Republican—know not. But this we
do know that he voted for the annexation orTexas
\cilh slavery, while Ur. Fillmore declared hlm-
aelf Inflexibly opposed to her annexation so
tongas she held slaves. If the Republican Is
satlsflcd with a comparison of the record o f the
two'on the Bul\|ect of Texas annexation—we are.
No. 6. “Was not Ur. Buchanan atone tlino
a Federalist and opposed to Ur. Uadi son and
the war or 18121” Wo answer yankee fashion
by asking was not Ur. Webster at all lima “a
Federalist, and opposed to Ur. Madison and the
war of 1812 ?’—and did not the Republican
advocate his election to the presidency four
years since? Wear 111 add however that Ur.
Buchanan opposed tie war of 1812 by fighting
the enemy while the men who made federalism
a reproach and Afning opposed it by a. titling
them. ,
Here are tho Republican^ interrogatories in
fulls
1. Does the Georgian A Journal approve of
the resolution of the Cincinnati convention In
regard to the foreign polloy or our government,
ana, in connection therewith, of the Ostend
manifesto? And does itunderstand Ur. Buchan
an, Inblsletter of acceptance to approve of
that policy?
2. Does tho Georgian A Journal approve of
the action of the Cincinnati convention upon
the propesed road to the Puclflo.
3. Does it sanction the principle laid down
by Ur. Bucbanau In bis letter to Thaddeus San
ford, Esq., of Mobile, in which bo says, “that
Congress possesses tbo (exclusive) power to
legislate upon the subject of slavery in the Ter
ritories"?
4. Does It''approve of that -portion of Ur.
Buchanan’s letter of acceptance, in which he
declares “that the people of a territory, like
those of a State, shall decide for themselves,
whether slavery shall or shall not exist within
their limits?”
8. Did not Ur. Buchanan, in the U. S. Sen
ate, in 1844, reluctantly agree to the nnnexu-
tlon of Texas, and that on the ground, as he
expressly stated, that it would "be the means of
limiting, not enlarging the, dominion of slave
ry?”
6. Was not Ur. Buchanan at one time a Fed-
earilst, and opposed to Mr. Uadison And the war

Caution.
Mxsjna. Editors i—I am convinced the want
of an opening to let the smoke escape to the
streets In our modern improvements Is the cause
of much loss—had there been two or three
auger holes of an lnoh or two diameter in the
uppor end or the door of the store that was on
fire last evening, the Are would havo been
arrested before any damage was done. The
underwriters might make It a condition that
would soon make It the universal custom.

Church in that place a nuisance, and that the
Methodist preacher in charge should desist
from preaching. The minister having declined
to comply with tho order, was treated to a coat

THE TWO UEBCHANTI,
TRANSLATED FROM TUN FXXXOH.
Oa the twentieth of January, 1706 the Preach
made their entry Into Amsterdam .—Despite
the severity of the season, the inhabitants
thronged from their dwellings into the streets
to admire this army of liberatom. The greatest
enthusiasm reigneu throughout the city, and
at nightfall a general illumination expressed
the public rejoicing. One small house near the
Admiralty, dark and silent, contrasted strougly
with Its brilliant neighbors: this wsa the dwell
ing of Master Woerden, a rich merchant Ab
sorbed in his commerce, be was perfectly lu-
different to the political events around, and
was, moreover, too good an economist to parti
cipate in tiie luxuries of light, which hfs fel*
low citizens thought lit to display. Master
Woerden, therefore, was seated quietly before
the Are in his cushioned arm-chiur, furred p*»
Usse wrapped carefully over Ills chest, his bald
brow thrust deeply into his Air cap. On a ta
ble uear stood u shining copper lamp a large
pitcher of beer, a clay pine, yet untouch
ed. In ono comer of the chimney satan old
domestic, Qwhose emhmijtomi testified to her
Flourish origin.
Suddenly the bell rang; the servant hurried
out, and the next moment a tall young uiau en
tered the apartment, threw offnis cloak and
approached tiie old man with “Good evening
fattier.”
“You, William ? I did not expect you so
soon.”
Hell Broek this morning, but the roods
(•re so encumbered with troops and Aigitives,
thut we have been all duy on the journeys”
“ Well, have you seen Van Elburg ?”
The youug man tobk a glass of beer, aud seat
ing himself by the lire before replying.
“ Yes, father; ho still agrees to the marriage,
but persists in giving but the four thousand du
cats for his daughters dowiy.”
“ Very well,” said Woerden, knitting his
ibaggy brows, “ let him keep his daughter aud
her dowry.”
“ Oh. my father!”
“ Hold your tongue, William. At your age
men sacritlce everything to love, '.aud despise
fortune; but.love vanishes, and money remains.*’
“ But Master Van Elburg is one ofthe richest
merchants in Hollaud, aud what he does not
give now, he must leave at his death.”
“Zoondslandamflnot rich too? Bee here,
my son; von will soon succeed ma in business;
remember these two principles—never to give
more than you receive; nor do an ythingentire
ly for the benllit of another. Thut is the way to
succeed in commerce, aud consequently in mar
riage.”
“But ”
“Not nnother word, my son.”
William kuew his father’s obstinacy too well
to insist, though be could not keep oU signs of
his discoutcnt from his countenance. Tue old
man took no notcie of this but coolly Ailed and
lighted bis pipe. A second time the bell rang;
alioti&’s steps were heard iu tho court, yard,
aud tbo dugs begun to bark Airiously. in a mo
ment the servant entered aud huuded tho old
man a letter.
“Provisional government 1” he said, as he ex
amined tho seal. With u very uncomfortable
expression of countenance, he tore off the en
velope, unfolded the letter; but as he read he
resumed bis tranquility.
"Very well; 1 ahull accept it.” he said; then
passing a letter to his son, he began to think
profoundly. The young man glanced over it; it
was a proposition for four hundred thousand
rings, to be delivered in a month to the gov •
ernmeut, for the subsistence of the Freuch
army.
“William, I havo it!” exclaimed the father,
suddenly. “Yen shall marry Van Elburg’s
daughter, and with a good dowry.”
“How?”
“Just let me manage. Have two horses sad
dled by day-break to-morrow, as the canals are
all Irozeu, and be ready yourself.”
“My dear father, how shall I tbauk you ?”
“Well, well, you don’t know yet what you
owe me. Ah, William, if you only have
the genius of your father, whon you are a mer
chant!”
Sunrise found tbo father and bou on the route
between Amsterdam uud Broek. The roads
were so blocked with snow, and ao slippery,
that the horses could merely walk, but tue
young man endured it patieutly; he was ubout
to meet his beloved, and to see his m&rriuge-
settlement concluded, which was to crown his
W uess. The old man was contented; for at
ottom of his heart he was veiy anxions
thut his sou should marry so rich an heircss.—
It was noon when they arrived. They left
their horses at an inn without the village, the
entrance of beasts of burden and carriages be
ing forbidden at Broek, which Is proverbial,
oven in Hollaud, for its neatness. The streets
were Aaggcd with polished stones of difibreut
colors, and disposed iu a sort of mosaic. The
spaces between the trout of tho houses and the
street were laid with Auer stones, bettor ar
ranged; these courts are fenced by balustrades
of polished iron, with ornaments of gilt copper,
and furnished with seats of choice wood, hand
somely covered, for the evening relaxation of
the family after tho heat of the summer day.
It is said the mania for neatness reached such a
point in this village, that if a fallen leaf is toss
ed into It by any indiscreet breeze, the inhabi
tants sally forth en matte to pick it up. TbUB,
when Woerden and bis Bon entered with tbelr
heavy shoes covered with snow, they excited
the ire of the natives, but as they had been very
long knowu there, they were permitted to pass
wituont molestation, to Van Elburg’s residence.
There, however, they were compelled to sub
mit to a ceremony from whioh even Napoleon
and Alexander could uot escape a few years
after; they hud scarce entered the court-yard,
before a sorvant brought them slippers to ox-
ohangofor their shoes.
Clotilda, the merchant’s daughter, made her
appearance with her father. She wore her
national dress; her hair laid back on her fore
head with a flat golden ornament, and ou the
back of her head she wore a little cap edged
with gold, and set with precious stones. Two
great Angora cats followed her, pressing them
selves aflbctionately against the skirts of her
dress.
“ Welcome, Master Woerden,” said Van El
burg, giving him his hand. “ Are you, too,
running away from the French ?”
Not a hit of it, Master Van Elburg; I care
asiittlo for the French, as for the Prince of
Orange. 1 come cm business, and to offer you a
good bargain. I’ve an order for four hundred
thousand herrings, to be delivered a month
hence. Can you furnish them to me in three
weeks?”
‘-At what rate?”
“ Ten Aorins the thousand.”
“ Douo ; I’ll furnish them.”
“Very well; and now let’s have something
to eat, for I am starving, Duringjbreakfast we
will talk over the next object of my visit.”—
Saying thiB, Woerden looked significantly at
the young girl, who cast down her eyes.
During tue meal the merchant of Amsterdam
haggled over the dowry of the bride, bnt Vun
Elburg wouldn’t increase a stiver, and Blaster
Woerden, after expressing some regret, Anally
gave in, and the marriage was settled to take
place in eight days.
The next morning William and bis father de
i iartcd; on the way, tho young mnn ventured
9 say : “Father, you have changed your mind
about Master Van Elburg’s dowry?”
“What do you take me for?” replied tho
rather, roughly. “You need nut ask me any
questions, for you will get no answer*. It is a
serious matter; ten Aorins a thousand for her
rings is very high. Imust have all my wits
about me.”
From thut moment Woerden did not open his
lips, and on reaching home, ho went to his own
apurtmeut aud locked himself in. Towards
evening, he gnve his servant a Uugo packet of
letters to carry to tiie Post OfTle. Three days
after, he exclaimed, joyfully, to Ills son—
“Child, 1’vo secured the dowry!”
The wedding arrived day. Woerden and bis
son returned to Broek. This time they enter
ed by a special door, opened only for solemn
occasions, acoording to the custom of the coun
try; for marriages, baptisms and Amends. A
great number of relations and friends were as
sembled. The master of the mausion came for-
ward to recoive them, but so pale so changed,
that william thought be must have met with
some misfortune.
"What ails you Master Van Elburg?” asked
Woerden, with a hypocritical smile; “you are
very much altered . ,r
“1 am very much troubled, my dear friend; 1
must speak with you.”
"Docs this marriage suit yon? K not say, so;
you can retract.”
“No, no; it is uot that.”
“Theu,” answered Woerden, who feared
lest some diHculty might arrlse from the expla
nation he expected, “let ob get through with the
marriage Ant; and after that, 1 am at yoar dla-

all up. Not to dishouor your signature, you
must buy them of me, andl will sell them to

During this lucid bonugue, Master Van El
burg recovered his senses, mid his political com*
pwture.
“Exactly eo. You ora a clever merchant and
have caught me in a skilful trap. It shall be
done."
Although Master Woerden’s procedure was,
to aay the least, strange, Von Elburg was too
knowing to evince any aunbyance. Eight days
alter the wedding he went to Amsterdam to see
bis daughter. Tile time the porta were chang

“Ah, my friend,” he exclaimed, “I am des-

“Not at alt; you got tho idea from me,” an
