The fact that the distance from the Gbata. hoochl6, through Albany, directly to Sovan. nah, is about 100 miles shorter, than by Ameti* jus aud Macon, would 6cem to relieve the tcheme from the Imputation of wildness, to Far as regards the people on the Cbatahoochie. Vhilo the other fact that in the event of the defeat of the Main Trunk organization, Savannah will be leit without any assistance in consummating her Gulf connection, con stitutes an ample defence of the course of the 8. A. & Gulf Company in enquiring what aid they could obtain on the Albany line in the event or the failure of the Main Trunk. We hope that it will not hereafter lie alleged by the people of South-western Georgia that their products are brought to our seaport town by too circuitous a route. In such event, it will be a satisfactory reflection to the citizens of Savannah, that the Savannah Albany and Gulf Company, invited their aid to a more di rect Hue to their city. We are not disposed at present, because we deem it unnecessary, to enter into an argumeut on this subjecWbut we consider it susceptible of demonstration that a direct line of road from Sa vannah to Albany, and theChattahoochie river, with connections at Pensacola and Mobile on the one hand, and Eufauia and Montgomery on the other, would be one of the moBt profitable roads In the Southern country, and of vast im portance to Savauuah. We are willing that for the present, the trade of western Georgia, should take the civ- cutious route of the S. W. and Central Roads, if It is agreeable to the people of S. W. Geor gia, because it is now the most practicable of attainment, but the time may not be distant when Savannah will from necessity be compell ed to exercise her legal right to build the very line of road now called by the Republican a wild scheme. Until that tlmo arrives we are con tent that her energies shall be applied to a connection with Florida—and wo may add with the Main Trunk, unless the Brunswick Company persists In their hitherto repudiating position, Job Pi-lntlng Promptly, Neatly and Cheaply Done. Fillmore and the Missouri ComprofolUi When called upon for sot^a assurance that Mr. Fillmore would veto an not Congress re-establishing the Missouri Compromise the beat that our opponents can do is to-refer to his past history. The reference is far from, satisfactory. "I am (said Mr. F.) in favor of immediate legislation for the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia.” That is the caption of one chapter in his history. What guaranty does it aflbrd ns that he would veto a bill excluding slavery from the Territories ? “ I believe that petitions to Congress on the subject of slavery or the slave trade ought to be received, readand respectfully considered by the representatives of the people! ” So reads another chapter written by himself, A third runs thus: “lam in favor of Congress exercising all the constitutional power It possesses to abolish the slave trade between the States ! ” It may be said tbnt this is a portion of- Mr’ F.llraore’s history which transpired 18 years ago. We grant it. But it is to his “ whole’ history that wo are referred. The Savannah Republican Bays that if ho did not veto it bill for tho restoration of the Missouri Compromise “ lie would be false to his whole history” When pointed to the whole history of a man near sixty years of age we certainly do him no wrong in looking over the record of the last eighteen years of his life. Is there anything we have cited to authorize the Republican's assertion that Sir. Fillmore is opposed to all “ section .1 agitation ”? He may ‘be, and we believe he is; —if so however, hiB whole history is far from showing it. But wo como from the past to the present. What Hays Mr. Fillmore now 'l “ I am opposed to the the reckless and no wise policy of tho present administration iu the general management of our national affiirs, ns shown in re-opening sectional agitation by the repeal of tho Missouri Compromise.” Ai SI 81 lliwn, iwnmu II iiuiui;n, ruilll.CI | immtq uu.i.w .1 I Ull ILK Clllll- J Humphries. If opposed to tho “ re-opening sectional agi tation by tho repeal of the Missouri Cora, prom is”—what more natural than that if President, lie should make an effort to close that agitation by re-cstablishiug that Compro mise 1 Thus runs the argument : (1) Mr. F.llmore is the opponent of sectional agitation. (2) Mr, Fillmore bolieves that the existing sectional agitation has been caused by the repeal of tho Missouri Compromise. Is not then the conclusion inevitable that (3) he will, elected President endeavor to quiet the exist ing sectoral! agitation, by removing what ho deems its cause ? This is the remedy advocated by c great body of those who attribute the existing sec tional agitation to tho repeal of the Missouri Compromise. They say repeat tho Nebraska bill, und restore thut Compromise, and all will be quiet—Ou the other hand, the South and the Northern Democracy deuying that the agita. tion owes its origin to any such cause, deny the efficacy of any such remedy. The representative of Mr. Fillmore’s district in Congress is his lato law partner, bosom friend and warm advocate, Solomon G. Haven. As far its one man can be of another, Mr. Haven is Mr. Fillmore’s spokesman—the Congressional exponent of his principles. Our readers, ahd tho Republican with them, will ogreo with u a in thiukiug it not probable that on a great political question how prominently bnfore the public, Mr. Fillmore aud Mr. Haven are ar rayed agaiust each othor. The position then of Mr. Haven ou the question ut issue, if could be ascertained, would do much to deter' mine thut of Mr. Fillmore—Con it bo ascertain ed? We answer yes. How? By rofering to a voto given by him just ouo week since. On the 30th day of lust mouth a motion was mudo that the committee on Territories “report a hill restoring tho Missouri Compromise' Araoug the 110 Northern men who voted in its favor stauds recorded the name of Solomon G IIavkn ! And yet the Republican ‘‘believes, as firmly as that tho sun will rl«o to-morrow, that Mr Fillmoie would veto a bill restorf|ig the Missouri Compromise!” We can only exclaim, Oh neigubor, “great la tby faith J hmitleoBi Unltid States; aroeofroraa'tJropowtitmofl raont, to withdraw from the 4 . Exegtion of William Palmer.—During the wholo of yesterday, says the European Times, Uth ult., the railway traius poured in their thousands of souls wno were this morning to be spectators of the dreadful tragedy, which was at so early an hour to bo enacted. They were not to be deterred from witnessing the execution either by wind or weather, and al though the ruin descended pitilessly the great er part of day, accompau ed by convulsive gusts of wind, there was no lack of eagerness dis played to be present on tho mournful occasion. The elements lent a melancholy air to the in tended proceedings, and the pervading gloom was only relieved by ti.o commotion ot the viB • tors, who were endeuvoriug to secure favorable spots of observation. As night came on, all tho approaches to the jail became more crowded thau during tho af ternoon, and np to tho dawn of this morning there was no abatement of the interest mau - fested all day. Here they reinained in the mud rain, and in darkness for several hours; once a position taken it was retained most obstinately, and by eight o’clock this morning there were not less than 20,000 persons present, who ex hibited tiie utmost decorum and regularity. Every available iuch of ground was occupied both in front aud around tho jail. Precisely ut tho hour appointed for tho execution (eight o’clock) tho culprit appeared ou the drop. He looked exceedingly well, and had passed un ex cellent night. It had been announced that he would address serrations. He did not, however, say anything. Ho was accompanied by the sheriff, chaplain, and the other officials connected with tiie pris on ; was dressed in the prison dress—a suit of grey. None of his relatives were present, but many of his friends of tiie turf were witnesses to the sad spectacle. Upon tho unfortunate man’s apnenrauce, the cap was placed over his face by Smith, of Dudley, who performed the duties of executioner, uud the roue having lieun udjlisted, lu an instant the earthly career of the greatest criminal recorded in tho annuls of history was at an end. Quitman to tho Committee will probably be read with interest. ..no “There was still before ns the Garita*- (Belen,) orgato of the city, (0,) itself a strong work, with parapet and ditch on one side of the acqueduct, uud a zigzag redan. oni tn© other, defended not only by the formidable citadel of Mexico, (D,) but by batteries at the gate (0,) on the Pasco (H,) and at the entrance ofa street, (L) These various works mounted 24 pieces of artillery besides several movable, and were defended by a very large Moxican forco. My whole command then consisted of Shield’s brigade, (volunteers,) Smith’s brig ade, 2d Pennsylvania , regiment, , (Colonel Geary,) Marine .battalion, Oth regiment (Ma jor Seymour) of Pierce’s brigade, part of 6th "igiment of infantry, (Mgior Bonneville,) and. detachment of 4th artillery under Captain Drum. “On the re-organization of the column at this point, about three-quarters of a mile from tho city, the rifles and South Carolina regi ments were placed In lead of the column, fol lowed by the remainder of the volunteer divis ion and Smith’s brigade, in the order mention ed in my official report. The flag referred to, may have been with the column. I saw but the regulur colors of tho two leading regiments. “Thus reformed and prepared, this stern and resolute column advanced to tho severe duty before them. Soiled with dust aud smoke, and begrimufed with blood, the officers on foot with the men, thuy moved onto the charge with banners turled, and no music but the roar of cannon and the rattling roll of small arms. “Within two hundred yards of the Garlta, Major Lorlng, the gallant commander of the ri fles, being severely wounded, the command of that regiment devolved on Captain (now Major) Crittenden, as the senior officer present; Capt Simonson, who waB there, as elsewhere, at the head of the column, having commanded fora short time. In this last bloody and declsivo charge, Captaiu Roberts did not participate, having been detained at Chepultepec. The Garlta was taken ou a charge at full run, at twenty minutes post one o’clock. Anxious to wave up the whole column, with tho view of entering die citaael pell raell with the retreat ing enemy, I called for colors. The Palmetto flag was tiie first reported to me, and by my or ders, Lieut. Sellcck, of the South Curolina reg* meut, then on my staff as ordnance officer, was ordered to display that flag on the Garlta. In doing so he wus severely wounded. About the same time the flag of the rifle regiment was displayed on the other side of the acqueduct. The small national flag, referred to by Colonel Roberts, did not meet my eye. Jf it was with the regiment on this charge, it must have passed into the gate about the same time. but was not displayed there. No flag waa regularly plauted at this point but that of the Palmetto regiment, and that was done not ;or idle cercmouy, bnt as a signal to the whole army that the gates of the "Sacred City” were iu our possession.
