Improved Gas Buhners.—An improvement
lias been brought forward, designed to bo used
in connection with burners where the flame is
produced by the combustion of two Jets of gas
issuing simultaneously from the top of the
burner. The improvement consisting in plac
ing n small blade of metal on top of the burner,
botween the gas orifices, so ns to more fully
separate and spread tho two jets, andcauso the
flume to be broader; tho metallic blade is also
alleged to act as a receiver, and by becoming
itself highly heated, to impart additional caloric
to tho gas, and thus produce better combuBtiom
Ttie blade is quite small, and the two jets unite
above it in oue common flame, in the usual
manner, excepting that it is broader and larger
than it would otherwise be. The invention is
aaid to bo applicable to nearly all the burners
now in use, and it is claimed for it tint it ef
fects an important purpose,—thatof increasing
tlie illuminating power of the gas without
augmenting the consumption.
Fine Times for Children-On the occasion
of tho baptism of the Imoerlal Prince, 50,000

Pressure of Steam in Boilers—A pniu-
liplet has been published in Euglond by Mr.
Andersou, the well known machinist, on the
management oj steam boilers, in which he says
that the pressure within a boiler is greater than
is generally supposed. With a pressure of fif
ty pounds per square inch, it amounts to 7200
lounds on every part of the surface exposed to
^e steam, amounting frequently to many thou
sands of tons iu the boiler, thus accounting for
tho enormous h&voo made by explosions. Tho
joints arc weaker th&n the solid parts; good
solid plate will withstand from 50,000 poundB
to 00,000 ner square inch of sectional aroa—the
joints will give way at about 34,000 pounds,
which shows the importance of seeing teat the
rivets aud other fastenings are always in sound
condition. Mr. Anderson divides explosions
into four classes, namely, from want of strength,
deficiency of water, heating of plates, and the
variety of other circumstances.
