Job Printing Promptly, Neatly and
Cheaply^ Done.
The public ingeiieral, and our Democratic
friends in particular, will remember that there
is connected with the Georgian 4* Journal es
tablishment one of the most thoroughly equip
ped jobofficc3 in this section of the Union, if
we are correctly advised, some of the most
beautiful specimens of job work ever done in
Savannah have lately passed from under our
presses. Give us a trial.
Our facilities enable us to execute every ‘do*
AWndof UvIn.
Sinco the Brooks affair, ’wo have noticed a
degree of excitement throughout tho North
which ha* fbutid vent in the denunciation of.
the assault In the most wholesale manner.—
Each little politician of that region lias thought
that with a crowd of Black Republicans nt
his back, he might with safety air ills courage
and get up a reputation upon so cheap u prin
ciple. This has necessarily arisen out of tho
fact that political capital is to In* made out
it. Rut with us the mutter stands very differ-
•ntly and wo would best answer all this by a
dignified contempt for all their vaporing*. Mr.
Brooks has done everything and said everything
that should bo said and done. It would Ik*
as well for ail men to let it rtyt where t is.
Our advice is intended for those of our
friends in Carolina who may rendfour columns,
and is based upon an account which we have
seen in tile papers, or Mr. litishlbnl Vicks,
Hogging a Mr. Stanford in u hotel In New York,
for denouncing Brooks.
As many Carolinians no doubt will l*o called
by business or pleasure, to seek the trade or en
joyments of the North, we conceive that they
should stand above the remarks let fall in bar
rooms. However chilvalrlc they may be, it is
impossible for them to light and knock down
the whole North. The only result of such a
course will l»e (exactly what the North denies)
to establish the fact that our only argument is
violence and tipifyiug the whole South by the
example of :i few hot-heads of one State, they
will appeal to the fanatics of the North for sup
port.
We have no doubt at this moment that in the
Palmetto State, with the natural excitability of
her people, there is not a boy passing through
a wood, either on his way to school or in pur
suit of game, who does not eye with complacen
cy some favorite hickory sapling which he has
selected in his mind to avenge the abused and
defamed Brooks, should the said boy be (against
his will) carried to the North.
We thiuk that those who cannot bear having
their ears shocked by such stuff ought to stay
at home; and we think, morever, that if the
whole Southern people would coutiue them
selves a little more to their own country in sum
mer, they would build up places of business
and pleasure without the aid of Northern mo
ney or Northern fashion.
•Since writing the above, we learn from the
New York Day Book that Mr. Vicks is not a
South Carolinian, but originally from North
Carolina, and now residing in Baltimore.

As regards tho happy condltlon or the coun
try at tbo time Mr. Fillmore retired from the
head of nfihirs. no man can bo found of suffi
cient hardihood to deny the allegation contain*
cd in the article copied above. All was harmo
ny and peace : a most dangerous Mcctiouul con
troversy tliut Itad brought tho stoutest hearts to
quail, had been adjusted to the sathfuetlon of a
large majority of the people. Tim bow of

“That may bo so,” as honest Handle hath it *,
still, precious littlo credit is due to Mr. Fill
more. While President, but one of tho three
departments of tint Government,,was under the
control of him orltls friends. They were in a
minority in the Senate, they were in a minority
in the House. The Judiciary, too. though having
little to do with politics, wus not made up of
the President’s friends.
it wholesome laws were past,"little thanks to
him. it was the Democracy that passed them
—some of them (the fugitive slave law for in-
xtaucc) over tho nearly unanimous votes of his
Northern friends.
Witli nil respect for our neighbor we have
higlu-r authority than his as to Mr. Fillmore’s
administration. The testimony which we ad
duce Is that of the American candidate for the
Vice Presidency. Of course he is a competent
witness.
What say you Mr. Douelson ? Mr. D. answers
as follows :
“It is true,he (Mr. F.) signed the fugitive law;
but it would have been stark madness—utter lu
nacy in him or uny other President, to have re
fused that signature, it was an act of the
most indisputable and imperative necessity,
and nothing more. Aud with the single ex
ception o! that act, HIS ADMINISTRATION
HAS BEEN ONE LONG, SAD, TEDIOUS
FAILURE AND BLUNDER. Who believes
that, with the proper spirit,, capacity, and ef
fort in the White House, we should have had
this disgraceful master roll of triumphant in
sulting, and yej unpunished negro aud aboli
tionist, mobs, insurrections aud murders'{ The
Executive inefficiency in the execution o f the
fugitive law, and the wretched blunder in the
whole Cuban business—from its commencement
to its close in so far as it is yet closed—have
doomed the administration at the Soatli.”
That will do. You can stand aside Major
Douelson.
So instead of the model administration of
which wo now hear, the administration of Mr.
Fillmore according to the evidence of the Amer
ican canidate for the Vice Presidency, was“oue
long, sad, tedious failure und blunder.’’ In
stead of the “harmony and peace” over
which the Republican grows rapturous, “it
••was marked by a disgraceful muster roll of
“triumphant and unpunished negro und nboli*
“tiouist mob*, insurrections and murders.”
The public will agree with us that ttfc less
said by the Know Nothings about Mr. Fill*
more’s administration the better for him.

'I’iie Now York Journal of Commerce says:
“Tennessee wheat has given great satisfaction
in this market. But little southern grain has
come to us in such good order, or shown in its
preparation more honest, careful husbandry. A
large proportion of it has been red, but the
grain is plump, and the quality very uniform.
It has been quite a favorite with shippers.” It
has only been two or three years since Tennes
see wheat was introduced into the New York
market, and this statement of the Journal of
Commerce shows that it is regarded there as of
the very best fluidity. We noticed last year that
Tennessee wheat commanded the ’highest
market price. This is creditable to our State,
and the compliment paid our farmers for the
manner in which they prepare their wheat for
market, while it is but Just, is. nevertheless, a
matter of which they should be proud, coining
as it does from so intelligent a source.
The wheat crop of Tennessee, this year, front
all we can learn from the various portions of
the State, will, we think, bo somewhat larger
than that of last year, while the quality will be
equally ns good. The yield has not been so
largo to tho acre, owing to the severity of the
winter, but the’ breadth of ground sown was
much larger. The new crop is already finding
Its way to market, and the grain is found to lie
“plump, and the quality very uniform.”
The prospect for an abundant yield of corn
is very flattering in this State, and without
some untoward event, the crop will bo au
average, if not above that of any previous year.

A Brave Woman.
Much of the modern, aud especially the Maine
Law Temperance eloquence, is neither very
cogent, persuasive, nor in the best taste, but
the first apostles of the temperance cause dis
played sometimes a power and pathos, accom
panied with apt illustrations, well calculated to
give to their new cause tliut wonderful impetus
whicli it actually received. In looking over an
old volume, we met with an extract from an
address delivered by a temperance orator, Fob.
25,1834,'which contains the following account of
the manner iu which a brave woman “saved u
ship
“An amiable lady, the wife of a sea captain,
accompanied her husbandjseveral times ucross
the Atlantic. On one of these voyages, the
captain became dangerously ill. At the same
crisis, the ship was overtaken in a severe gale,
whicli blew for several days witli tremendous
violence. For awhile the brave sailors endured
the greatest^ hardships and privations with
out complaining. At length* however, they
become discouraged and refused to obey ordersi
Thealirmed mate instantly made the captain’s
wife acquainted with uffhirs, and begged that
the captain might, if possible, come on deck ;
for, added lie, the .sailors will break into the
spirit room, and if they do, all is lost, and not
a soul on board can be saved.
Ordering tho mate on deck, tho lady seized
her husband's pistols and placed herself before
the door of the spirit room. Thu desperate
tars came running down together, hut, arrested
by the sight of the woman, they came sudden
ly to a stand. Presenting her pistol at the
foremost, aud raising her voice, she assured
them that the first man who dared take anoth
er step should be laid dead on the lloor. And
then, in a mild and winning tone, she said:
“Come, inv lads, you have done bravely; the
blow is almost over; run to your duty; the
ship shall be saved, and you shall not lose your
reward.” Filled with admiration of her con
duct, rather than with four oi deuth, the sailors
bowed respectfully, gave three cheers, and re
turned on deck,
ship was saved.
“Ladies, shall the ship be saved, or shall she
sink ? If saved at all, you must guard the spir
it room.’’
Unfortunately, however, the best guard a
poor woman can put upon a spirit room don’t
always prevent the thirsty mariners from
breaking in. Let her never despair, however 1
Above all, let her keep always in her hands the
weapous of cheerfulness, patience and hope.
These have saved many a husband and
son whom ill temper and abuse would have ru
ined.— Richmond Dispatch.

Judge Ormond, of Alaiuunn *
After the com.lu-.ion of a speech by Mr. Van-

arose and declared liiniMdf for Buchanan. The
Judge was formerly on the ,Supreme Court

imt we no longer felt ho when we heard the
Judge broadly announce that lie believed Unit

and come out iu favor of Buchanan ! The gist of
the Judge’s argument was “sectional issues:,"
“South iu danger,” “ Buchanan thu only wifely,”

The Oregon Pen.
Editors Southern Cultivator—Last year 1
procured half a pint of Oregon Peas, for whicli
I paid $1 30,which is too much. I planted about
tbe first of June, one half, on a small lot: tbe
rows 3 feet apart by 15 inches in the drill, aud
three peas to the hill. 1 plowed and hoed one
time; when the vines got about waist high, tho ;
wind blew them down. 1 did not save all the !
peas, but let my chickens gather them.on which
tiler feasted for months, as she vines continued
to bear until frost:
The other half I planted in some new ground
aud cut them about, the lotli.ol Otc. for hogs,
and my cows like it Utter than crubgrass hay,
corn shucks, or fodder.
I thiuk every farmer should plant the Ore
gon Pea ; but as the price lias been so high, it
has deterred many from trying thum. I will
send one ounce of the Oregon Pea to uny pe r-
son that will send me nine cents iu postage
stamps.
It you think this worth a place in your in
valuable journal, put it in “shin-shape,” anil let
it go; and If not, throw it with your rubbish,
and accept the well-wishes of u young farmer,
wlm takes the Southern Cultivator, reads and
profits by its instructions.
Yours truly, S. H. Giiusonb.
