He lore i proceed to state the evidence, it is S et* to settle the question whether or not. I what you have charged. It is well known here the position I have occupied in the prom ises. I was strongly and decidedly in favor of nominating Fierce,l)ouglasorHoine other man, who had showu his hand on the Kansas ques tion, by supporting it during the struggle for its existence. I desired to ltavu it considered a misfortune that an ospiraut for the Presidency was not in Congress to vote for the measure. Above ull others, I desire Gen. The South and southern men had before been often menaced by tho army nud navy of tho general government, und Mr. Fillmore was the last who did it; but tho Abolitionists and reb els iu Kansas, tiie men who Mr. Fillmore says arc striving against 11 “reckless und unwise” measure, are tiie only ones who have felt the keen edge of the military power ol thu United Btates during Gen. If I ever made the remark you quote, and iu tho unqualified maimer you assert, I do not recollect when and wlicro; but I have no hesitation iu saying I think it highly probable I said in Hiibstauco what you slate, i know at oue time 1 thought and felt so, and I am apt to say what I think. I have never mudo such a remark, nor anything like it, since Mr. Buch anan, in ids letter of iieceptuneo, placed himself upon tho principles of the Kansas bill. But I promised to bring strong pi-oof to show that it requires not more enurugo than you or I noHscHH to maintain one’s opinions, even in the nice of one’s previous and rocont declarations.
