Tho tclegnipb some days since reported much
excitement ill Mobile in eonscquoiieo of tiiedls*
eovery that a hook selling firm in ilmt city were
engaged in vending abolition publications. Tho
following iiscount or tho niTiiir appears In tho
Mobile 'tribune.
For tho past lew days tho citizens ol Mohilo
have beeu greatly excited lu consequeiicoofthu
discovery tiuit one of our largest bookselling
linns—Messrs. Htrlcklnud &> Co.—lmyc been
vending inccndlury books. How long they huvo
been engaged iu U, it. Is nut now post-iblu to
tell, but them is great reason to believo tliut it
has rnu through several years. Fur some weeks
suspicion lias attached to them; but evidences
Justifying on investigation were obtained only
u lew days ago. Tho matter was then taken
lu hand by ft committee composed of some ol
the most respectable and discreet citizens, who
met from day today aud udvuuccd step by step
to the conclusions oil which they have acted.
The guilty parties were examined, und every
facility was given to them tojuatiiv themselves.
Their defence, however, unly farther crimi
nated them. Filially, alter a thorough exami
nation, tho must complete proofs wuro found
of their guilt.
These mau—especially the leading partner
of the house, Mr. Strickiuud—have lived man)
years within this State. They cuuio hitnev
very poor, aud by the gouorosity of uur people,
had built up a successful uud profitable busi
ness—Mr. Strickland, it is thought, was worth
at least fifty thousand dollars—aud before them
there wm a prosperous earner, which, in a few
years, would huve secured to them an ample
fortune. It is a little difficult to suppose that
men iu this condition would jeopardise their
present interests, to say nothing or those of the
future, iu order to puuder tho wicked spirit ol
abolitionism. They are nut, apparently, tho
rneu likely to do this, aud were ptybubty bent
oil nothing more tiiuu thrift. Tucy desired to
make money: uud it was not u question, per
haps, of much moment with them how they
made it. And iu this mercenary spirit they
committed the great crime ior which they will
pay so heavy uud just a peuulty.
Alter a fair but rigid investigation by the
committee, its conclusion was tuut they wore
uulit to remain within the cily—aud thus char-
itubly, aud it seems to us, justly, it was deter-
tulucd that they sUould be requested to leave
within live days. A delegation accordingly
proceeded to their store iu order to report to
them personally this decision; but the culprits
were not to be found, and it was afterwards
learned that both of them hud lied. Strickland
on Friday evening proceeded iu the storm then
prevailing to the light-house below the city,
uuil there was put on board of aschoouerwhicfi
immediately hoisted sail uud disappeared. Of
what has become of his puitner, Upson, we
have uo certain information. Ho probably by
this timo has put tt long distance between
himself aud this outraged community.

We Qi-e'puiucd to say that some of the fisher
men inluiuiting the islands in the vicinity of the
d.sostcr, vulture-like, as soon as the intensity
of the storm subsided, hovered about the dead
bodies, aud robbed them of whatever of money
or valuables they possessed l This is mon
strous, aud we hope that justice in some shape
may be dealt out to them.
The loss of property by this storm is no
doubt very great. Plantations along the coast
have beeu injured, but to whut extent, it is, of
course, impossible yet to tell. In many in
stances fences,doubtless,and bouses,were blown
down, and stock killed.—N. O. Bulletin.
The Bulletin says:
We are gratified to learn that, although the
storm was very destructive at Grand Caillou
and Grand Terre, most happily there was no
loss of life. At the latter place the flood was
very high, and the inbabinunts were very much
terrified, the high water driving them to the
fort for refuge.

The President, W. H. Young, E-tp, is now at

finished, and one of each lias been sent us as
specimens. Theso notes evince unusual good
taste and judgment in tbeir design and execu
tion. Besides being unusually handsome, they
are gotten up with an especial viewto prevent
alteration or counterfeiting. The variety of
figures and nicety or line cngravmg render
counterreitingextremeiy difficult while the depth
of colors and complicity of the numerical figures
would utterly prevent alteration. Botn of these
have new, but uot local, designs. It is intend
ed, however, to have original and local views
to embellish the $1, $2, $20 and $50 bills, nnd
all will bo beautiful uud tasty notes. It is ex-
