only refer to the announcement which
appears iu the advertising columns of

Important Railroad Items.—The
Memphis and Charleston Railroad haa
lieen leased to Tom Scott, the great rail
road king, in the interest of the Pennsyl
vania Central. The contract lacks only
the confirmation of the Board of Direc
tors of the Memphis and Charleston Rail-
roud, which will, no doubt, bo given at
their next meeting, which takes placo on
the 17th inst.
. The Pennsylvania Central havo been
trying io consummate a lease of the Geor
gia and Atlanta Si West Point Roads, and
the Georgia Central has also been bid
ding for the same. Nothing definite has
1 een done.
Referred to a Committee.—We learn
that Benjamin Conley has been revolv
ing in bis mind, and seriously calculating
the matter of making qu effort to hold
on to the oflfleo he is now exercising the
functions of, till finally he has referred
tho matter to a committee of three prom
iucut members of his party and personal
friends, to consider, weigh well, and de
cide upon tho proper 0001*80 to be pur
sued by him, and by whoso advice he
will l>e governed. We have not learned
whether they have made their roj.ort or
not; but of course they will advise him
not to be so silly as to try to retain the
office. There is nothing to l>o gained by
such a course—not even tho prospect of
making a tenth-rato martyr of hhi*clf;
but everything to lose.
DaBouroi'slV Wounded. —On Wednes
day evening Mr. Clou. Coleman, a young
man living near the Rolling Mill, was
shot and dangerously wouuded by Mr.
Monroe Barrett, another youth about the
same age. The case was investigated yes
terday before Justlco Johnson. It seems
that Coleman and Barrett werj engaged
at a game of ball. During the time
Coleman and others of his companions
took advautago of the defective eyesight
of Barrelt to irritate him. This pro
voked him to resistance, audi iu pulliug
a pistol from his pocket, it was accident
ally discharged, the ball passiug through
his left hand entering the abdomau
of Outomau, and is supposed to havo
lod cd in his vitals. Ho is still in a
critical condition. After a thorough in

The matter is worth the attention of our
people, and, we have no doubt, that
rasnv of them will confer with Mr.

Important Arrest.—A notorious scal
awag by the name of Grecno B. Hol
combe, of White county, who has been
playing the same role in White, Union,
Towns nud other counties in North
east Georgia, that Skyles recently did,
in Dade, Gwinnett, and other places—
though in a far more offensive and outra
geous manner, has, at last como to grief,
after a carreer of villainy unparalleled in
this country.
This is the same creature who, wo be
lieve, was instrumental in tho ar
rest of Messrs. Palmer and Merritt, of
White—the one a bold and unswerving
lawyer, who has been prominent in con
demning the highhanded outrages of
Holcomb and those at his bidding; the
other, the Tax Collcctorof White county,
while coming hero to settle -with the
Treasurer—an account of which urrests
wo published recently.
This man Holcombe, we have been in
formed, has been arresting men, against
whom no genuine complaint had ever
been made by any one.
He had a squad of soldiers to do his
bidding. He would trump up charges,
and havo warrants issued having the ap
pearance of being legal; and on these
would arrest men of means, and compro
mise with them—turning them loose by
their paying such sums of money as he
would see fit to demand.
Our information may not be accurate,
and perhaps the facts are not exactly as
set forth above; but what we have said
will give a fair idea of the manner in
which he has been behaving.
We learn that that the United States
Deputy Marshal arrested Holcombe on
the 1st inst. Ho will bo brought to this
city for trial. His outrageous oonduct
has been brought to tho notiro of the
United States authorities, and they have
moved iu this matter.
The end approachoth. Let us be
thankful, be patient, aud take courage.
Rev. B. A. Bonniieim.—Tho popular
and successful German and English
teacher, and President of the Jewish con
gregation of this city, has returned to
this city, accompanied by his bride, the
daughter of Rev. Mr. Hofmann, a Jewish
Minister iu Baltimore, where he was mar
ried on tho 24th ult.
He comes to resumo his ministerial du
ties and tho labors of his school, in which
ho has been so successful. The many
friends of Mr. Bonnhcim are glad to re
tain him iu our midst, and extend a cor
dial welcome to her whom he has chosen
as his partner for life.
Forger.—Some months since n gentle
manly looking individual, who styled
himself Clarence Harlan, approached
Ool. It. M. Young, at Calhoun, and
presented a draft on a house in Bal
timore with which Col. Y. done business.
Suspecting nothing, tho draft was
promptly cashed, Recently the draft
was returned to Col. Y. disapproved.
The house had no such accredited agent.
On Wednesday the same individual was
recognized by Mr. Moore, of the house
of J. L. Cohen, who immediately had
him arrested. On his arrest ho called
himself Haynes. Col. Y. was forthwith
dispatched for, and, upon his arrival,
Harlan, alias llayncs, introduced him
self ns Mr. Whitman. He has gone, un
der escort of Col. Young, to meet the
punishment ho deserves. Ho attempted
similar forgeries in Marietta and Ring-
gold. ^

printers iu Tins Sun Office return their

long yesterday morning. Visions of New
Year crowded upon his exuberant fancy,
and entranced, he dallied too long in the
arms of Morpheus. In this exigen
cy Lowry was summoned to dispense
justice and conduct Wednesday’s mat
inee.
MRS. SYLVANIA
a “liiligant ladie of quarreling pro

who testified:

nor has she iver fought a moortal bit, cx-
cipt in offerin' the ginthst of loove licks,

that would ’a quite taken the heart out

for her angelic booty, she smoothered
him to dith with a flood of kisses, that
quite overcame bis alogance, and she has
been a poor helpless widder ever since.
Have mercy on her yer Honor!” Lowry
said she could pay $5, or repeat the mur
dering operation on him. 8he paid $5

MU. JOHN DltYAN

streets. Ho commenced a most eloquent
defence—
"I never was drunk but once in my life,
For which I got bunged by a spunky young wift

'Stop,” said Lowry, “none of your pusi-
lanimous, doggerel sentiment here. $5
and costs, sir.” Now*, that poor poet
went off fully convinced that Lowry was
a barbarian, who could no more appre
ciate sublimo, soul-inspiring epics, than
he could the grandeur of the “Demonia
cal Extravaganzas of Mohamme dan Par
adisical Rhapsodies,”

and paid about $2 for the privilege.
Lowry thought of making her his private
financial adviser iu consideration of this
master strategy.

The Atlanta City Hospital.—The
