Communism is a term in French poty-
ties having no reference to community
of goods, nor sgrarianism.
In Franco a Commune is e territorial
district, haring certain political fran
chises. Its inhabitants hare nnder those
franchises, certain powers of local gov
eminent.' A Comm enist, therefore, in
i politics, Is one who opposes the
of the ancient Communes, of
many of whieb even the city of Paris
is an aggregation. Communism is un
derstood to bs opposition to the consol
idation of the Communes under one cen
tral government. But for the al
leged excesses of tbe Communists,
doling the late siege of Paris, Commnn-
W wonldjhare found many sympa
thizers in the United States, especially
in tho South; and its aim and object
would not have been confounded with
the idea of community of goods'and agra
rianism. But great allowance is to be
made for these alleged excesses. The re
ports oome from the avowed enemies of
liberty. The Commune was opposed to
Imperialism.
The Internationale, from the beat in
formation now obtainable, is understood
to propose to level ail social and political
distinctions among men, nnd to unite all
the nations of the earth nnder one grand
oentrslized Empire. It originated among
tho dissatisfied and malcontent of Europe,
sad has come to be manipulated by
dreamy social philosophers in almost ev
ery country on the Eastern Continent.
In this country it finds greatest sympa
thy among such altruists as Mrs. Viotorin
Woodhull, and suck garrulous eccentrics
as George Francis Train.
If tho Internationale originated among
worthy aud good-meaning poople, it lias
lost alt claim to favor or support iu this
country by the exaggerated utterances
and ultniismtjof its advocates among the
most prominent of whom are many wo
man suffragists, frec-lovcrs, frcc-tkiukcre
and scoffers at religion and morality iu
general.
Since its introduction into this coun
try it has mado tho improssion'tlmt the
Communists of Paris were, and ore, mem
bers of it It may bo that some of them
were members of the Internationale, as
stray sheep often wander from their fold,
tlut tbe principles of tho two associations
are totally different. Tho Internationale
accm8 disposed to strengthen itself by en
couraging malcontents of every kind and
degree, in every nation, to unite with it
They claim to be cosmopolitan, nud in
vite representation from labor aud
trades-unions everywhere.
The Labor Reform Party, ns wo under-
■tand it, is not iu any way identified
with the Communists of Frnnoo, nor the
Cosmopolitan Internationale. It is of
indigenous origin, and is essentially, in
all its features, American.
Its formation dates about threo yean
bark, nnd it has held three National Con-
vou.ioua. The first, we remember, mot
oome whore in "the North; the Hoooud in
8t Louis, in 1871, and the third at Co
lumbus, Ohio, on the 22d February lust,
whore David Davis, ol Illinois, was uom
justed for President, and Joel Parker, of
New Jersey, for Vioe-Preoideut.
It originated ohiefly iu tbe opposition
of the producing classes to the present
Cuaucial policy of tho Federal Govern
ment, and the prodigal waato of the pub
lic lands by gift to corporations. At tbe
late Convention at Columbns, every pro
portion looking to legislation concern
ing the social status of individuals or
races was voted down, and sneh mad cap
agitators as George Francis Train and
Mrs. Viotoria Woodhull were not coun
tenanced. Woman suffrage, too, was ig
nored.
Time alone can prove tbe propriety or
impropriety of the Labor Reform move
ment, and indicate whether or not Devis
and Parker will be supported by any
eooaiderahle number of voters, and thus
vindicate the wisdom and sagacity of tbe
manipulators of their party.
Tbit, however, is apparent to every
thinker end obeerver. The labor reform
er* are Democrats by tbe very nature
«f things, whether they set with the
greet Democratic Party or not Their
ioto Platform indicates much po
litical acumen in its drafting.

Car Works, of Jeffersonville, Indians,
