Wo Lave before us the London Daily
Jfeut of the 7th iosfeanft., oonteiningeome
intereating dataib of the oonehufon of
the Tichborao trial.
Thia famooa trial, by which an illiter
ate Auatraliaa batcher aonght to gain
poaaeaaion of probalfly the moat valuable
Batata in England, ogteide of the poaaea
aiona of the nobility, terminated at 12:40
o'cloek on the 6th of Marsh, at the Court
of the Qaocn’a Bench, Westminster-hall,
after a protracted session of one hundred
and An* days.
It is estimated that there were 10,000
spcctatoii present. For ocoe in a life
time, Hiaasid, it was impossible to ad
mit mother living sonf in the hall. The
jury, in retiring, bad to move aw morse,
and climb over the partition, and leap to
the floor on the inside.
The jury on Monday previous, had an
nounced themselves sufficiently acquaint-
ed with the case to pronounce a verdict
This disclosure produced the most pro
found excitement among the friends and
sympathisers of both the claimant and
defendant All considered tho
nouncement equivalent to a verdict
against the claimant. The Court re-as
sembled on Wednesday to bear the ver
dict end dispose of the case, when the
oonnsel for the claimant anticipated the
jury, and stated that it was the desire of
bis client to submit to a non-suit.
The Lord Chief Justice directed that
the claimant be called. The ohief clerk
then called “Sir Boger Charles Doughty
Tichbome, Baronet come forth or yon
will be non-suited,” three times in a load
voice with distinct pauses; but the
claimant was not there. He had
dared unflinchingly the searching in-
terrogatoriea of the Attorney Gen
eral; he had stood upon the witness
stand for a month of days, and perjured
himself probably fifty thousand times
without a tremor; he had shown to 1 the
oourt for nine months a bold, confident
and apparently honest face;he had never
betrayed the lie in his Leart by any ex
ternal emotion or expression; he had in
variably preserved a dignified deportment
and sanguine eye, even amidst tho most
trying and perilous stages of his suit;
but the man who had dared so much,de
fied the Judge, jury, counsel and wit
nesses, and even heaven to bafilo him,
had not the hardihood and effrontery to
encounter his antagonists in the moment
of their triumph, to face the frowns of
the court and endure the indignant aeofis
of the indignant multitude. He had, sb
usual, that morning driven up to West
minster in his little brougham, but being
greeted by hisses he turned away and
took refuge in his rooms at the hotel.
The Lord Chief Justice then ordered
that the plaintiff be prosecuted for per
jury at the next session of tho Central
Criminal Oourt, and be committed to the
common goal in default of $25,000 bond.
The Attorney Goneral announced that
the prosecution would be public and con
ducted at tho publio expense; which
announcement was greeted by loud
cheers.
The usual instructions preliminary to
the next trial were given, the customary
courtesias and compliments acknowledged
between the Court, counsel and jaty, and
the .Chief Justice adjourned the court
and dismissed the jury whioh had been
impanneled for nine months, with the
following singular and humorous speech:
•• I may state that the arrangements of the officers
of the court have greatly tftiul&d to our oomfort.
Lot me add further, gentlemen, that I hope in the
new Jury Acta clause will be Inserted to exempt
every one of you from serving ou another Jury sc
long as yoamay be deelrousof being exempted.'
{'Aughtor.)
As soon ss the Judge issued his war
rant for the apprehension of the claim,
ant on the charge of perjury, steps were
immediately taken to secure his arrest.
The significant announcement of the jury
on Monday induced the police to suspect
that the elaimant might attempt to
eacape; the detective department was
conseqnently on the alert. They pro
ceeded directly to his hotel, and on in
qniring for Sir Boger Tiohborne were
shows in his private aitting-room. The
warrant was read over to him. The claim
ant, perfectly oomposed, said:
"Wall, ilia vary unfortunate, as it will put mi to
constderabla personal Inconvenlenco If I am to bo
arrested nn*."

mood. Evidently he is one ot those fel

were longer, that bo might meet evil more
than half way:
I see much said about the prospect of

It is now the 25th of March; the peach

The smith noticed the empty sleere, and
asked him if he lost his arm in the war.
He replied, with a sigh, that be did, and
even more, going on to relate how he left
home to enlist in the Ronthern army, and
at the dose of the war, on going back lie
fonnd that his wife who thought him
dead, had moved awiiv, mnl he had smoe
been nnable to obniin a trace of her.
“What is your name ?“ ashed the black-
smith.
Whoa tho answer was "J. M. Walrup,’’
he suddenly released the hoof over which
he had been bending, and, without look
ing at the soldier, cried: “Follow mo in
to the honse,” end hurriedly led the way.
Result, the diaoovery of Mrs. Walrup
with three new ohihlreu by her side. She
had supposed Walrup dead, and hod ac
cordingly been married to the black
smith. The two men wisely came to tbs
conclusion to let the lady cliooae between
them, and she elects in favor of Walrup.
Then aha aaya she oaouot do without the
children, and the blacksmith says,
after* most painful pause, "You shall
take them, my deer.” “Whenthestoam-

quirer, in e most touching paragraph,
“stopped at the landing some hours later,
Walrup went on board with his still
weeping end thiok veiled wife, end the
blacksmith followed with his children.
The boat’s bell rang for the starting,
and the separation was at baud. The
orew, the passenger*, the captain—all
who witnessed it—were affected to tears
by the tonohing scene,
“With great drops rolling down liia

voice bade their mother an eternal gooi
bye. The two men gazed wistfully at
each other’s faces, shook hands long and
earnestly, and then the blacksmith, by a
strong effort of iron will, released tbe
hand of Walrup, and walked quietly to
the shore. He never turned his face
again toward the boat, whioh toon passed
out of sight around a meroifu! bend in

few days when work ooalil be done ; and
then the land too wet to plow.
Many have tried to plow this wet land,
bat it only injured the stock aud prevents
the growth of tbe crop. Farmers had
hotter do nothing than do that. It lias
been tbe coldest winter we have bad for
years, added tlieto wet. Even a day or so
since it sleeted, snowed and rained in a
fow hour’s time. Even now, it is oold
enough to kill hogs, and raining in tor
rents. The corn planted Iwo or three
weeks ago mast rot in the ground, it is so
wet and cold that it can never spring up,
unless a sudden and instunt chaugotukes
place.
There are fewer froedmen at work than
since the war. Some there are who say

The negroes only work when compelled,
and many of them have been able to
squat about on tbe lauds of others, and
are satisfied if they can be 1st alone.
They care to make nothing.
Less guano is purchased in this section
than usual. The guano of 1870 aided to
make tho crop of 1871. Bot there will
be less aid to growing crops this vosr
from guano than any year lately past. The
farmers are impressed with the import
ance of making their corn at home.
Their meat, at the present prices, does
not pay; but the time will come when
ootton will go down, and meat go up;
then they will hsve n > hogs, and will be
compelled to raise their meat at great
disadvantage. Hence some are feeding
more corn to their hogs than will btly
double tbe meat it will raise,
All these influences are brought to
bear against a big crop of cotton. It will
be contrary to all post experience toaup
pose such a thing. I have never seen a
good crop after such a winter; and for
continued and dreadful cold and wet, I
have never seen such winter. In troth,
it looks more like starvation, at this time
of the year, and with this weather, than
anything else to your correspondent
from Houston.
