George S and Eli Hoyle, of this oity, were cadets in the United States Military Academy. Several of these gentlemen are members of the Board of Trustees, of the State University. United States District Court.— Yesterday very little business was trans acted. The Court standa adjourned until His Honor returns from the Savan nah Conrt, whither he has gone to ait together with Judge Wood. The traverse juries will stand ready to meet nt tho oall of tlio Court; but probably the Grand Jury will not bo assembled again this term. Stringer Consoled.—Wo learn from the Gainesville Eagle that the disconso late ex-Legislator Stringer and his fugi tive wife have become reconciled. Here is what the Eagle says: "Tho divorce case of Mary E. Stringer vs A. M. Stringer, was amicably settlod in oonrt to-day, and both are happy." Wo woro sure she could not resist those pathutic charcoal appeals. Excitement—Considerable excitement was occasiouod at a late hour yesterday afternoon, on East Hunter street, liy an altercation between a negro washerwoman and a oitisen. It seems that the woman was a little impudent to oitisen, where upon oitisen broke a broomstick over her head, a little circumstance that raised a scries of screams from washerwoman. She was escorted to tho station bouse. Orr Track.—Tho II o'clock dowu freight on the Oeorgia Railroad, on Thnrsday, ran off the track two and a half miles below Conyers. It was caused by the breaking of one of the stirrups. No one was hurt In consequonce of this ooeident the day passenger train on that road due here at 0:20 p. m., did not ar rive until SDO a m. yesterday. The night passenger train, though much de layed, made time to Augusta. 8. A. E.—Quite a number of the Alumni members ef the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (College) Fraternity assembled in this city on Thursday evening, and organised an Alumni chapter, preparato ry to receiving the delegates and visitors to the General (Annual) Convention which meets here daring tho summer. City Attorney Newman reported that he was unable to find any clause, cither in oharter or ordinance, authorizing 2d Deputy Marshall to levy executions, col lect taxes, eto., this duty being vested in the Marshal. Thr Deputy seems em powered to assist and to collect special taxes, to enforce ordinances in reference to drays, etc. Adopted. REPORT OP MARSHAL. Marshal Anderson reported ho had col lected S37.8G on account of general tux other claims in process of settlement; there had been 621 arrests during tho quarter, 015 ol which were violations of ordinances; that stray cattle were becom ing a nuisance, and recommended Coun cil to adopt an ordinance requiring them to bo pat in inolosuros; that officers and polico had generally been prompt and atttentive; that orders of Board of Health bad been exo cated, and that proceedings witli regard to Mr. Parson's buildings had keen sns pended until bis connscl, Col. Mayor James stated that ho had been applied to by some of tho authorities of the State I-'nir to ascertain what encour agement thu city could offer to the Agri oultnral Society at the next Fair, and that ho had informed them tbe city did not proposo to nssumo any authority in tho matter, hut porhnps they might be nhle to lend them somo money. Tbial.—Lieut. Holmes was placed on trial for drunkenness,neglect ofjduty and immoral conduct. City was represented by Citv Attorney nnd Judge Collier. Lieut. Holmes was defendod by Major Hillyei aud Cnpt Fears. Ho was sus pended 30 days and reprimanded. Tiie Attornev Generalship. —Soon after tho inauguration of Gov. Smith, he tendered the appointment of Attorney General to Col. P. W. Alexander, and it is understood that the ofllco hos been open to his acceptance all iiio while. We learn, however, that ho has defi nitely declined the appointment, and so notified the Governor yesterday. Col. A. would have made a good officer and served tho State faithfully and with credit; but tho view lie took of it is n correct one: that ho can make more money by following bis profession. Musical Soiree.—There was a large nnd delighted audience at tho entertain ment given last night at Concordia Hall, by Mra. Eckford’s Chios. Approbation waa enthusiastically manifested in ap plause and bouquets. Especial fsvor was bestowed upon tho little girls for their skill and musical accord in ducts on two pianos. Cargile, a colored minister, was arraigned before Justice Butt st the instance of one Lizzie Pool, a likely negro girl, on tho charge of se duction. Cargile had just married on Thursday, iu Madison, nnd had come here yesterday on a pleasure excursion with his bride, when J-izr.io Fool, bent on vengeance, snapped him up in n min ute.
