Accident on the Cherokee Rnllrond.J
Some days since, we learn that on the
narrow gnoge portion of the Cartersville
&. Van Wert Kail road, about two miles
from Rookmart, as the train was backing
from that place to Cartersville, the for
ward car ran upon some fence rails piled
upon the track, throwing two of the cars
off. A brakeman, roamed James Thur
mond, fell upon the track and the wheels
of the car so badly injured one of bis
legs that amputation became necessary
that afternoon. Three or four little
negroes were arrested and put in jail,
charged with obstructing the track.—
Their ages were from nine to ten years.
Mr. Thurmond was an Atlanta man. His
mother resides in this oity.
SUN-STROKES.
— Alexander Stephens contradicts with
much acerbity the report that he is
“tired” of editorial life. It’s only his
readers that aro tired.—Memphis Ava
lanche.
Mr. Stephens no doubt “tires" readers
of your stamp considerably. No rogue
e’er read the honest law without a
grimace—and a “ pshaw 1"—Louisville
Ledger. —
— Rumor says that President Grant’s
sympathies are strongly excited lot the
Cubans, nud that he would like to take
strong ground in their belialf.—Chicago
Mail.
There is hardly any reasonable doubt
of this sympathy for the Cubans on the
part of Grant, any more than there is a
doubt that the Captain-General of Cubs
strongly sympathises with the oppressed
people of South Carolina, Between the
two honors are about easy as regards the
exercise of the cheap quality of sympathy.
Under Heavy Bond.
We mentioned sovoral days ago the
killing of Tyus by Holton, at Camilla.
The Albany Central dig of the 21tli has
tho following addenda:
Mr. Holton was arrested and lodged in
the Albanv jail, to await his trial. On
Saturday last his attorneys procured
writ of habeas corpus, whioh gavo him his
liberty, ho giving bond to tho amount of
seven thousand dollars, for his appear
ance at the next term of Mitchell county
Superior Court, which will take place on
the second Monday in next month. His
friends are confident that tho trial will
rosult in bis acquittal or a light punish
ment.
