We hear that considerable quantities

The Griffin Star has come square out

Tall Cotton.
Mr. A, K. Seago, who is dealing largly

cotton eight inches high. It was grown
on the farm of M. H. Gray, of Bunny-

Bpajdiug county. He has three hundred
and fifty acres planted in cotton this year.
He hns made cotton raising a specially
since tho war, at the close of which he
was left with almost nothing; and he has
succeeded most astonishingly. He says
it is no more trouble to him now to raise

than it was to raise two bales in I860.

Harris la Atlanta.
Harris, of the Bavsnpah News, has
gotten well enough to write what hp
knows about Atlanta. A racy letter from
his ever racy pen appears ia the News of
the 13th, aud from it, a few extracts are
made for the enjoymeut of the readers of
The Sun:
ATLANTA HOSPITALITY.
The irresistible hospitality of Atlanta
and her citizens was sandwiched between
the sessions of the Convention and came
after them. It took us by surprise and
met us at every corner, private citizens
baited us with mint juleps aud led us
smiling captives on numerous impromp* u
excursions. Innumerable committees
hovered near, anxious to miuister to our
pleasure, and banquets aud balls were
improvised for our especial delectation.
Iu the midst of so much genial und pleas
ant confusion, what wonder that some of
us flew to hot soda-water for relief ?
freely confess that I am a subsidized mau.
Nevermore will prejudice agaiust Atlanta
rankle in my bosom; nevermore will I
laugh to scorn the marvellous growth
and prosperity of this wonderful city;
nevermore will I meet with incredulous
smiles the singing of her praises by some
enamored citizen.
PEA WING A PARALLEL.
There is as muoh difference between
the hospitality of Savannah and that of
Atlanta os there is in the location of the
two cities. The one is jovial and hilari
ous—the other is serious, sly and insinu
ating. In Savannah, preparations are
made for you, and you take your choice;
in Atlauta you have no choice. You must
carry out the programme. You are met
at the corners by solemn committee-
men, who lead you off to enjoy yourself
in spite of everything you say or do.
ao
Private citizens pounce down upon you
and carry you—a willing Iamb—to a
>rineely sacrifice. In Savannah, you are
eft free to acceptor decline: iu Atlanta
you must accept or die. That is my ex
perience, Whut, with tho committees,
aud the citizens, aurl tho courtesies of
my friends of the Atluuta press, I suf
fered the most agreeublo martyrdom im
aginable.
mrs. Westmoreland’s reception.
Tho reception given to tho editors by
Mrs. Maria J. Westmoreland is said to
havo been a very brilliant affair. My
traveling wardrobe would not admit of
my appearing on regie, and so I remained
away, much to my regret. The attend-
anco was largo, ana tbo (, elite of the
city,” of my friend Whidby would suy,
were present. The effect of so much
wit and beauty was certainly bewilder
ing, as I gathered from tbo confused
conversation of some of the editors upon
their return.
ADAIR’S JULEr tree.
Among the most pleasant remem
brances of Atlanta to tho majority of us
is the little editorial excursion to the
cozy and hospitable home of Col. G. W.
Adair, in West End,|wbere the editors
wero pacified and soothed by a series of
standard strawberry juleps. For oucc,
formality was thrown aside. There wero
no threadbare toasts and no prosy re
sponses; no descent into the dry desola
tion of speeoh-maUing, and nothing, in
short, to mar the happy informality aud
sociability of tho occasion. I remember
I made a menial note of the fact that
Adair’s strawberries appeared to be of
some new and peculiar variety. It was
observed that half a dozen of these re
markable berries were too much for the
average editor, though some of tbe more
versatile and talented members tf tbe
Convention got away with a dozou, with
out showing any signs of distress.

The Cotton-Growing Interest.
A circular just issued by tbe Depart

expression to an apprehension that cot
ton seed and its products are gradually
deteriorating iu quality aud quautity, aud
tenders to the planters the organized co
operation of tbe Department in any

tion may be more intelligent and efficient,
the following ‘queries have been address
ed to promiuent planters:
1. Have tbo cotton seed and cotton
crop deteriorated in quantity or quality,
or both?
2. To what do you attribute such de
terioration, if such there be?
3. Could this department aid by any
means't-o promote the interests of cotton
planting, and how?
4. In what respect is deterioration
most manifest?
5. What variety of cotton is tho best,
and what is its origiu?
0. Is it a common practice to select
tbo best bolls for seed V
7. What efforts have heretofore been
made in the introduction of cotton seeds,
und what has been tho result?

B0U Another crime in fashionable life
has recently occurred in Paris, an erring
wife slain by a jelous husband. She was
young and he was old. He loved her,
she )oved devotedly a younger, but poor
er man, but was forced to marry her
elder lover. Uuhappiucss followed.—
The young wife sought her former com
panion. The suspicions of her husband
were aroused, he employed detectives
and discovered their crime. The
huabanfi accomplished his revenge by
slaying Lis wife iu her lover’s room,
went immediately to surrender himself
to the police, and, at the request of his
lying wife, culled on his way, to send
her a priest. "Extenuating circumstan
