Atlanta, Ga., June 15, 1872. Editors Sun: I enclose you extract from letter received from Col. Gist, of Honth Carolina. It will doubtless be of iuterest to your readers who nre raising wheat. If such a yield cun be made in tioutii Caroliuo, (a State not adapted to wheat growing), what ought our planters to make ia this section, under proper cultivation and preparation of the soil ? It is true that Col. Gist planted superior seed. Jonbsville, S. C., Juno 10, 1872. Mr. Mark IF. Johnson, Atlanta, (fa.: Dear Sir—I writo to give you an ac- couut of the bushel of Purple Straw (red) Wheat, bought from you lost fall. I prepared one acre of red land thor oughly, by turning under a fair crop ol peas, (the land was in corn, peas sowed broad cast when tho corn was plowed last time), with a long, narrow twister.— Ou the 20th of October I sowed broad cast over tho land about 25 bushels cot ton seed; soaked the wheat in b!uo stone, sowed and plowed the cotton seed and wheat iu together with a small twisting shovel. I think every grain came up- got a tine stand—out it to-day (Juno 10), and got from the acre sixty dozen large bundles; height of wheat about four feet. Several planters who have seen it iu the last few days think the yield will not be under 25 bushels of good wheat. 1 am well pleased with the purple straw variety, and so is every one who lias seen it. Respectfully, W. C. Gist. >-•-* Competition v«. Monopoly. jEditors Daily Sun: A few days ago, writing of the various improvements in Alluntit, I touched upon the ico trade und its successful manufacture by the Ice Manufacturing Company ol this city. Tho hot weather is fully on us, and something cooling is sought for, and I propose to say something more on the subject of ice. Since it has been made here, it has become au important item in Atluuta’s trade, und those who had the nerve to iuvest in the wonderful inven tion will, ho doubt, iu due time realize good profit* upon their investment. The pric$ of ico now, compared with what it was before this company com menced making it, is another evidence of the old adage that competition is the life of trade. From all I can learn, I be lieve ice never was sold in Atlanta foi less than 3} cents per pound, except wheu competition periodically arose, and fnouopoly set to work to kill it off, in Which it always succeeded, tift the Ice Muuufacturing Company got under full headway here, which, fortuuately for the people of Atlanta and for the stockhold era in the company, is too strong to he \auquished, nod every body is in the full enjoyment of this great luxury at from one to one aud a half ceuts per pound—equal to seaboard prices. 'fliin company is selling ice by tho car )oud to Montgomery, Athens, aud else where. The quality of the article made hus been fully tested, and found equal to uuy in every rospeet, while it can be used with less waste. Tho pcoplo of Atlanta are indebted to this company fora boun tiful supply at low rates, aud are using it more freely than ever. Observer. Floyd County l)«hg«lo. At a meeting of the Democrats of Floyd county, held in Rome last Katur day, tho following gentlemen weiu *p pointed delegates to the Htato Conven tion: Nathan B ins. John T. Manu, M. It* Bulleugur, Uuu. J. Cuiumiiig, C. 1*. Doan, John hkiunrr, W. P. Whitmore, Field ing Height, J. W. II. L’uderwood, John It. Towers aud Dunlap Hcott. Industrial Museum of the Georgia State College. It is proposed to establish iu connec tion with the 8tata College of Agriculture aud the Mechanio Arts, au Industrial Museum—to contain models of improved agricultural implements and muchines, products of agriculture, products of manufao ure, and the mechanic arts gen erally, rejmsentiug us far as possible all industrial interests. This appeal is there fore made to the public, not alone to Georgians and the people of the South, but to all interested in Industrial Educa tiou, to aid us in this endeavor, by seud iug to the Museum of the State College whatever may illustrate Agriculture, Manufactures, or any of the Mechanio Arts. We solicit models of machines of uDy character ; models of bridges ; plans aud photographs of buildigs, bridges, etc.; minerals, specimens of ores ; specimens of woods; products of agriculture; pro ducts of manufactures, exhibiting as far as possible the various stages of prepa ration ; and generally, whatever may illustrate the industrial arts. Donations will be acknowledged b; publication in the Catalogue. Direct ai articles to President State College, Athens, Georgia: marked *for Industrial Museum. The authorities of the following Rail roads, viz : Georgia, Western <fc Atlantic, Atlanta & West Point, and Central with its connections, have generously offered to give free transportation to all articles designed for this Museum ; and it is ex pected the other liailroads of the State will be equally liberal. All Newspapers favorable to tho cause of Industrial Education are respectfully requested to publish this card. W. L. Broun, President. Athens, Ga., June 1 si, 1872. The Cost of Lsiting. The Columbus Sun, of Sunday, has the following paragraph, illustrating the economy with which the laws are some times executed: AiTattempt waa made to carry off a grindstone valued at $1 80. A little ne gro boy was charged with the business. A magistrate committed him to jail. He was kept there six months, brought be foxe tho Superior Court and acquitted. For board iu the jail the cost to the county was $90, and wo suppose Court and other expenses will raise the expense to $125—all for a $1 80 grindstone. The county gets nothing. New Wlust. The Rome Courier of Saturday has this item: Tho first wheat rectived in this market came up on the Boat last Thursday, con signed to Berrys & Co., from T. J. Rich ardson, of Cherokee county, Alabama, some eighty miles below Romo, on the Soosa river. There was GOO bushels of fine amber w heat sold to Williamson & Co. at two dollars per bushel. Oforgla Railroad learnings. We learn that tho earnings of the Georgia Railroad for tho past two months —April and May—were yery largely in excess of the earnings for the same months of 1871. This is a very fine showing when wo remember the dullness which seems to prevail in every branch of trade, and speaks w ell for I he manage- months above men turn r*l the ‘roacf cSfr- ried a large quantity of cotton—brought from its hidiug places by a high market —and railroad iron. The road still con tinues to carry a largo quantity of iron.— Chronicle and Sentinel, 1 Gth. JOHN T. HEAD, Proprietor ol llio HOUSE. ling Die Passenger Depot, r-tf CHATTANOOGA, TENN. DU. J. L.
