UsoUor Malaulry, tho beloved }M8tor of St. Luke’s Church, has just re turned from bis long tup to the North, lie is enjoying good health, and we judge from his cheerful spirit that he is hope ful of the speedy rebuilding of the beau tiful Church destroyed by Sherman’s army. Religious Entertainment. —The la dies of St. Luke’s Church have, with much care and deliberation, prepared a Panorama of the Bible, which will be shown next Friday night in their Hall, corner of Walton and Forsyth streets. The occasion will certainly be a very happy one, as well as edifying. Rev. W. B, Smith, United States Com missioner, of this city, showed ns cotton blooms of the 15th instant, from the plantation of his son, Dr. W. C. Smith, of Grantville, who has cotton stalks in his present crop thirty-five inches from the ground to the central bud. The crop prospects in that region are quite prom ising. Hogaksvillb Institute.— This insti tution of learning, which has so long en joyed the confidence of the people, will have its closing exercises on Friday, 21st instant. After the usual exercises during the day, there will be a grand concert at night under rhe direction of that excel lent teacher and musician, Professor Henry Schoeller and Mr. J. Lowenstein, the famous violinist, from Griifin. This school bos long enjoyed a large popular ity, and bids fair in the future to merit, as it bos in the past, the confidence of all who are acquainted with its regulations. TURKU KISSES Of FAREWELL. Editors Atlanta Daily Sun: I write concerning tho Fair and Entertainment given at this place ou the 14th instant, under the aasp ices of the Union Point Musical Club and Benevolent Associa tion; the proceeds of both to be ap plied to the erection of a Baptist and Presbyterian Church here. The awards, (a linudsomely bouud volume of Moore’s Poem’s) to the most popular lady, (and a handsome walking cane) to the most popular geutleman, were by vote awarded as follows: The poems to Miss Lillian Yonng; the cane to Jan. B. Hart, Esq., both residents at Union Point. The attractions of the fair (other than tho above) were a Poatoffioe, through which tho bashful lovesick could corres pond, ami a magic well, at whoso fount they could drink of its cooling draughts, and at the same time view the lovely features of the beautiful and deservedly popular “Rebecca at tho well,” and her assistant, Mi6s Gertrudo Yongo from the city of tho sea. The Postmistress, Miss Elbe C., dis pensed many of love billets, and tho Gip sies, Miss Lou. B. and Poppie McL, gave many peeps into futurity. The more substantial attractions were cakes made by the hands of the fair matrons and maideDs of Union Point and vicinity, (which were disposed of bv sale), and ice cream, the saloon of which was presided over by that estimable lady, Mrs. Jas. B. Hart. Flowers also were contributed by various ladies in the town and viciuily, and sold at good prices. To Messrs. Horton & Walton, James A. Gray & Co., and Richards & Bro., of Augusta, the Association and all con cerned, are iudebted for valuable contri butions. Miss Myitus T., represented the goods so kindly given by the last named gen tlemen, and had muoli success in making sales; while various Indies sold beauti ful rich oakes made from the excellent sugar contributed by the first named gentlemen. Mr. J. B. Hart represented Messrs. Gray A Co., in exhibiting their donation. The citizens of Uuion Point and vicinity will remember those kind nesses when they visit Augusta to make their purchases next fall and winter. The whole Fair was a decided success as an occasion of pleasure, and in get ting up a Very considerable amount of f uuda to aid in the erection of the two churches, and plainly foretells tho success of the forthcoming Agricultural Fair to be held at this place in October next. The Athens Danner puts the following good one on reoord: A little fonr-year old of onr aequaiut- anoe was ecveroly scratched while play ing with a pet kitten not long ago; where upon ho aeited imia by the hind legs, and beat her brains out over the stairs. The New Orleans Times of the 16tb, has the following paragraph relative to the crop prospects iu that State : There is very cheerful and encourag ing news from the country relative to the growing crops. Cane, corn, and cot ton are represented to be iu fine condi tion. The cotton, especially, promises a good yield. There is talk of as large a crop as that of year before last. The weather has been excellent. No fears or troubles on account of high water, cre vasses, etc. Tho next six weeks will tell the tale iu regard to this staple. The cultivation has been better and the acreage larger than any preceding year. Nor will our planters this year be plagued with a short corn crop, as they were last year. The plant cane crop, too, has a fine appearance, and the planters on the low grounds are quite cheerful over the anticipations of a good and profita ble yield. The Macon Telegraph, of Tuesday, re- X)orts the following accidents: A rockaway containing Mrs. W. M. Wudley and a young son was accidental ly turned over ou Third street, yesterday morning. It seems that the pin joining the singletree to the wagon broke, which of course started the horse, who started off on a run, and in his flight turned over the buggy containing Mrs. W. We are glad to say that her injuries are not like ly to prove permanent or severe. A singular accident has befallen a most highly esteemed lady. It occurred in this wise*: Mrs. R. M. Rogers hod a fa vorite cat that betrayed some symptoms of sickness, and she proposed to give it a bath to rid it of fleas, etc. No sooner hod she put it in the water than the cat turned on her and bit her severely. The cat died in an hour and Mrs. R. was sub jected for a long time to a series of fits. At latest accounts sbe was doing well. IN TEREHTINO ITEMS. Caution! Every genuine box of Da. The Commercial of tho 17fli pops this piestion into the tooth of the Greeley ite*: Beu Hill has been appointed delegate to the Democratie Convention. A short while ago, Ben said he “never was u Democrat—if ho was, ho didn’t go to be.” We really can’t see why the De mocracy should worry him any longer with their attentions. A Cave Spring correspondent of the Commercial says; Mr. B. Hano, a highly respected rout er on Mr. M. H. Ruud’s term, of Polk county, died very suddenly Wednesday morning. Ho did a good day’s work the dav before, ate hearty as usual at supper, retired aud slept quietly; uext moruiug he arose from his bed, went out of tho house, remained a short time, and re turned, complaining; Jay down and died in a few minutes. A Sickening Outrage. The Macon Telegraph Messenger of Sunday, says: We learn from our agent that a horrid crime was committed in Pulaski county last Thursday morning, on the persou of Mrs. Charlton Lovett, by a negro man about 21 years old, formerly owned by Mr. Joe Philips, residing ten miles be low Hawkinsville. On Thursday morn ing this villain went to tho house of Mr. Lovett, and finding Mrs. L. there ulone, her husband being on a distant part of the plantation, produced a huge knife which hqhad just sharpened for the pur pose, and seizing Mrs. L. with great vio lence bwovg lie would cut her throat if she w*dp the least poise or resistance. Having accomplished his purpose he fled, but the alarm being given he was pur sued by some thirty men during the day, and captured and lodged iu Pulaski coun ty jail. There was great excitement over the affair throughout tho county—the victim being of a highly esteemed and influential family. A Note to ThIIuIuIi. The AdgHHhi Constitutionalist of Tues day, says: The Georgia Fire Company hod their engiuo out for practice yesterday after noon. With 155 pounds of steam the engiue played 205 feet through fifty feet of hose. A 11-10 inch fuozzle wus used. The distance was measured by totally disitercsted parties.
