Timet announces that Dexter liejnoldtj, a prominent mem ber of the Albany bar, baa invented a type-setting machine, which, having been pronounced a complete success by tvpe founders in Boston, New York and Philadelphia, has been sold for $1,000,- 000, to a combination of New York capi talists. The machine is ■ tid to be ex ceedingly simple in construction and easy of operation, with capacity of set ting 2,000 ems of tvpe per hour. This is about the equivalent oj four average compositors. Other type-setting ma chines, it should be stated, have been invented, proving only partially success ful, and impracticable in competition with the machinery of nature. Jfunroe County. The Ailverl.cer of tire 18th, just »t hand, has the following items: Mrs. Wiley Fleming, an esteemed lady of tbisoounty, died lust week. Mrs. Nathan Ensign, formerly s resi dent of Forsyth, died in Charleston, 8. 0., a short time ago. Mr. C. C. Fambrongh, who killed tbe negro noticed in our last, was acquitted by the investigating court of the Seventh District. Tbe evidence was conclnsive that he acted in self-defense. Among the witnesses were several negroes pres- eut when tbe homicide took place, who testified strongly in Mr. F.’s favor. Mr. John Blasiogame met wiih a serious accident, one day last week. He was thrown from a mule, in the road sear Hickory drove, and his shoulder broken and dislocated. Other injuries were sus tained, and in addition he lay in the hot sun about two hours, helpless, until he was discovered by a negro, who conveyed him to a physieian in the neighborhood. One of our citizens who haB just made a circuit of sixty miles, from Forsyth via Stroud's Cross Hoads, Culloden, Hickory drove, Knoxville, Hopewell, Busselvillo, to Forsyth, gives the result of his obser- vatiou as follows: The best crop pros pects were seen from Forsyth to the Cress ltoads on the oounty line. In the other seotions of the two counties visited, the corn and cotton prospects are exceed ingly indifferent Wheat crop short; oat crop nearly a failure; fruit crop very short Crop* In Cobb County* The wheat crop is one we always feel interested in, being ft great consumer of this particular breadstuff. We aye grati fied to state that the yield of wheat, in this county, is very good. The grains are large, full and well matured. Har vesting is pretty general at this time. Messrs. Cook & Cheek have already pur chased a quantity of this year’s growth at 82 per bushel; being brought iu early, it of course commanded a good price. Corn is luxuriant, growing with unusual rapidity, tbe recent rains seeming to have given a new impetus to its growth. The crop will be unquestionably* heavy, con sidering the area iu cultivation. Cotton never >vns more promising, and there will be a larger crop ruined iu this county tbun uny year before. Oats are excelieut. Extensive fertilizing, improved ngiicul- ture, and favorable seasons, have tended to bless tbe labor of the farmer, and make glad bis heart—Alariclt'i Journal, Ulh. The Longest Bridge In the World. The elephant Romeo, whose death has already been noticed, receives all the at tention from the press that his greatnefw and goodness warrant. He was the most intelligent of elephants, and thousands of people in all sections of the country feel that in his departure they suffer in some measure a personal loss. A Chica go paper makes this interesting aud real ly touching statement: Aside from the great financial loes he had sustained, Mr. Forepaugli was deep ly moved by the catastrophe, as he re garded Romeo os the most valuable ele phant in existence, attributing to him a degree of intelligence almost human. He had made a study of the animal’s pe culiarities of disposition, and had suc ceeded in establishing the most affection ate relations with him. “Why, dash it,' said the great showman with a curious quiver of the voice, and a suspicious aversion of tlio head, “ho knew more than any traiued horse I ever owned. He knew he wasn’t right these last few weeks, and when I’d go up to him and say ‘How do you get along, old fellowV’ he’d reach out his trunk and take my hand and put it ou his forelegs, as much as to say, ‘There’s where it hurts me ; can’t yon do something to help it.* ,r and .then the disconsolate proprietor went t on to enumerate Romeo’s shining qualities; bow he would do any conceiva ble trick in the ring—stand on hia fore legs or hiad legs, turn on a pivot, waltz, go lame, kneel down, walk over his keeper’s body, taking the nicest oare not to touch a shred of his clothing with bis ponderous foot — in short, do anything which you could pos sibly think of asking an elephant to do; how, when tbe wagons would get stuck in the mud, old Romeo, with the power of a hundred horses, would get behind and push them along with the greatest ease; how, when he was sulky and savage, and they had thrown him down upon his side, and he would lie there a day or two before he would give up, but finally would weaken, aud with bis pleading eyes fairly beg to be released—and so on with a volntu3 of interesting reminis cences. The following is clipped from a pri vate letter from Frederick county, Vir ginia: “We had quite a sudden death here at the factory yesterday. You know where the old meeting house 1- at the factory. While the Sunday school wus assembled there old Mr. Rice Levi stepped in, ac companied by some other gentlemen, and rnude an uddiess, iu which he used ra ther improper laugunge arguing ou some passages of tbesciiptures. Mr. llcusel ( probably tho superintendent of the 8uu<lay .school , ) maintained tho veracity of tho Bible, which the former eutirely rejected, saying lie did not believe in the Bible at ull; that it was & book brought together by the illusions of tho prophets, and without speaking another word, took his list and left the church. Trying to hitch his horse, ho dropped down, aud the horse trampled upon bim. They picked bim up, carried him buck into the church, where attempts at restoration were made without success; then they took him to Mr. Colbert’s house, ^hero, in tfte cojirse of an hour, he expired. Ho was speech less from the moment he left the church till his tleath.” A Vindication of fepanlsh Honor anfl Dignity, a Spauish organ published _j New York, snya that if (general Sickles has presumed to be arrogant with tho new government at Afadrid, in regard to tho demands for U)r. Houard, the Cubau prisoner, it advises that the “case bo at once disposed of in a mauuer worthy of our honor and the high spirit of our national character—lot us send the poc- tor’s head to Mr. Grant through his per sonal ffiond, (general Sickles, that they jnay learn to treat Hpain with the deco- “urn that she is entitled to," Mi Josh Billing^ says: “AH yoq have to do to raise oats is to plow the land deep, then manure it well, then sprinkle the oats ali over tho ground, one in a place, then worry up tho ground with a drag all over, then set up uites to keep tho chickens and woodchucks out ov them, then kra- dlo them together with a kradle, then ruke them together with a rake, then biiid them together with a band, then stack them up with a stuck, theu thrash them out with a flail, then clean them up with a mill, then sharpen both ends of them with a knife, then stow them away in the granary, then spend wet days aud Sundays trapping for rats and mice. It ain’t nothing but phuu to wise oats— try it.” The casket for the remains of James Gordon Bennett was maguiticent.
