June 25. 187", Tun Pbauich List fur tLe next Geor gia Stole Fair, is now in press. It is earnestly desired that the large edition be distributed promptly throughout the Slate. Address Col. Samuel Harnett, Secretary of the State Agrionltnral Socie ty, Atlanta. Atm T. G. Hawunb has raised a large crop of closer hay, this year, on his premises, about a mile beyond the city Cemetery. Specimens of the luxuriant growth can be seen at the store of Messrs. Pendleton, Jones A Co., Mitch-11 street. Commencement Exebcises will take place next week of the Georgia Female Seminary, at Washington. It is an in stitution of long standing, and main tains its high, merits under the care of Mr. B. 8. Irvin, son of the late Hon. Isaiah Irvin, whose honorable character istics he bears. A gentleman of this city, of sharp observation, reports that the crops in Bartow county, which he lately visited, are very fine, are being harvested. The farmers are largely using labor-saving maohines—not only reapers, mowers, Ac., of various kinds; but apparatus for properly preparing provender. Aoiuccltcbal Fairs.—General Col quitt, President of the State Agricultu ral Society, visited the Bibb County Ag ricultural Fair, at Macon, lust Wednes day and Thursday, and has returned.— Ho particularly praises the exhibition of grains and vegetables. A liberal Premium List has been is sued lor the Clayton Gonnty Fair, to be held at Jonesboro, on the 2d and 3d of August. Two Finns.—The first occurred about one o'clock this (Saturday) morning, and totally consumed the residence of Mr. T. J. Hightower, on Windsor street, near Rawsou. Nothing was saved from the building except a little furniture from the lower story. Severul fine shade trees were distroyed, and the surrounding shrubbery and grounds badly damaged. The engines did all they could; but arri ved too late to render much help, owing to the distance and fierce headway of the fire. Mr. and Mrs. Hightower, and part of the family were visiting in Forsyth county. A Swiss woman, who kept house, had been ironing until late at night, and ihs fire appeared to originate in the irouing-room. But the eldest son at home, says that the fire commenced between the ceiling and second-story floor, over the ironing* ro in. It is cortain the upper story was burnt first. Hence the causo must have boou from matches carried their by rntr. If so, this is the second $5,000 firo intlie o'ty fiom this cause in less than a wed- This fact calls for gi cuter caution. The building was insured for $2,500 iu the Georgia Home, and the furniture for five hundred dollars in the New York Home. The second fire was about 7:30 o'clock iu Mr. J. Kreis’ Dying Establishment, on Mitchell street, below Pryor. A chim ney was burning out and set firo to the papering of a room. Tho fire compa nies were not needed though hastily on the ground. Emoby College.—Bishop Geo. F. Pierce is 1 resident of the Board of Trus tees, and Bev. J. W. Burke, Secretary, Tho Faculty is composed of eight profes- s ns, with Rev. Dr. O. L. Smith, Pres', dent. There were ouly three alumni in 1841, the first at tho college Commence ment, in December, 1837. The gradu ates of the next twonly-two years num hcred 392. There were no graduations from 1862 to 1868, when the number was only two. Two years later there were 27; and this year the seniors number 30. Whole number of graduates 455, includ ing many of the prominent citizens of Georgia and the South. The College now baa 192 students—30 Seniors, 35 Juniors. 42 Sophomores, ‘21 Freshmen, 11 Scientific Course, 53 Acad emic Department. Instruction in English Literature runs through the entire College course, in which the student is conducted “in bucIi a manner os to secure an insight into the Philosophy of History, and to lay the foundation for an acquaintance with the Laws of Nations, and the political aud Constitutional history of onr own Gov ernment.” Especial prominence is given to Civil Engineering—it is conlinned iu every class through the entire College course. The Mineral Cabinet is claimed to be pup of tfio Quest in the South. It oon- sista of pot less than twpn'y thousand apcpimeitf, having been in progress of collection (or thirty years, and embryges many of the moat beautiful, perfect and valuable specimens of crystalixation and other mineral forms, in the world, and from all the important localities on both ooutinenta. While the discipline is firm, it is rath er directed to the development of manly •elf-control, than to the aecurement of iervile obedience. The anrrounding aud prevailing influences favor the forma tion of good habits aud the develop ment of atrne and a noble manhood. Not a Ku-Klux Case.—Yesterday and day before a prosecution was heard be fore United States Commissioner Smith, of this city, of which this is the sub stance in brief: It was in proof that iu July, 1871, ono Warren Davis, colored, was called to come out of his house iu Coweta county at about 10 or 11 o'clock at night, by parties unknown to him. But appre hending danger, ho made his exit at a back door and harried away to Newnan. Soon after he left pistols aud guns were heard about the llouse. On arriving at Newnan, he consulted Judge Woi. F. Wright as to the trouble, lie was told that if he could identify the persons, warrant, of course, would be hsued for their arrest. No action was taken ut that time. After hearing tho testimony, Judge Smith decided that no case had been mado out, and thereupon discharged the parties arreatej —Mosers.
