The State Convention meets tlii» morning, in the Hall of the House of lie- preventative*. at 10 o’clock. Ucn. Too mb's gpeerli. Gen. Toombs delivered un ml Ores*, lust evening at the Capitol to uu immense audience, among which were numerous delegates to tbo State Convention. He declared himself in favor of uncompro misingly adhering to Democratic princi ples as the salvation of the party and the country. He suid that the Baltimore Convention should nomiuate neither Greeley nor Grant, but that if after due consultation and deliberation, they thought it impolitic to mukc a nomination, they could with the greatest propriety and consistency, refuse to make a nomi nation, but plant themselves squarely upon a Democratic platform and return home. His speech contained some sublime and patriotic sentiments. He stated that people might live freemen or die mar tyrs to liberty, and in speaking of the Democratic Tarty said, that if it aban doned its principles he would abandon it, as a means of proving his self-respect and honor. Wo arc well aware of the fact, that Grant and the Radicals who are sup porting him, are exceedingly anxious to have the Democratic Tarty nominate Horace Greely at Baltimore; and their agents are at work every whore trying to secure that result. The nomination of Greeley by the Democrats, secures the election of Grant beyond p- radventure, and will be the death of tbo Democratic Tarty. This is what Grant and the Centralists want Those who are 60 anxious to defeat Grant—who hold this to be paramount to all other considerations—ought to consider that the nomination of Greeley at Baltimore secures the very object they desire to defeat. The fact is, Greeley lias no strength, and cannot get up any enthusiasm any where. The Li boral Republican suppor t which be will rocoive at the North is so contemptuously small that it amounts to almost nothing; and the strongest Dem ocratic support he will receive there will be in those sections whore the Democracy are the weakest and the most demoraliz ed. He will not be supported by the Democratic party where it has any strength and adheres to principles. In view of tlieqp facts, wlmt is our du ty ? It is to give the Democratic Party a straight nomination—something upon which they cau rally the great mass of the party with enthusiasm. If this be douo, wo will achieve a glorious victory otherwise Grant will be elected, nud Liberty be at an end. Meriwether County. Thcro WHS ft very large meotiug of llie citizens of Meriwotlier county, at Suml- Town, on Monday, nnd in ft full and free discussion with tbo prominent men present, tbo unanimous verdict wns for a straight-out Democratic candidate by the Baltimore Convention; and they can re- coguize no difference between Horace Greeley and Grant; and the citizens will not bo committed to Greeley. New York, Juue 25.—Of the many jurors called on the Stokes trial, to-day, there was uot one who had Dot expressed his opinion, bias or prejudice. The jury, wheu completed, will be much more iu- telligent than oa any murder trial here for years. This much is due to the new jury law, passed last winter, which docs not exclude for having au opinion or im pression. Carl Margraf, shot by Louis Mnggiori, twelve days ago, died this morning.— Maggiori died a week ago from wounds received at the same time. No more jurors had yet been obtained in the Htokes case, at noon. Tbc voice of the masses is turning against Greeley rapidly everywhere. If tbo county Conventions in Georgia were all yot to bo bold, tborp aro not many wbiob would not demand a straight out numinatiou at Baltimore. Wo have a private letter from Elber- ton, Ga, tbo 21th, in which the writer, a moat intelligent gentleman, says: A month ago Groolay would have oarrM lid* county, but bo ia losing ground rapidly now. A largo majority ol tlie moat substantial citizens «l this section favor » straight out Democratic nomina tion at Baltimore. If thla ia done, I don’t belioyc there aro a do»eu white mcii iu the oouuty who will not suj>]>ort the nomination. We also have a letter from Fort Gaines, iu Clay county, giving an so count of a Democratic meeting tboro on Saturday last, to seud Delegates lo tlie Convention. By a trick a Groeleyito was placed in tbo chair, who appointed a mujority of Groeioyites on tbo committee to draft resolntionr. This brought in majori ty and minority reaolutious, which wero diacuaaed at some length. After Home time, Capt. John Johnson, Rep resentative from that (Clay) county, offered a substitute for both reports, tbo purportof which was that the doctrines enunciated iu the columns of llio At lanta Sun are tlio ouly hope of the couutry, which was passed by a majority of two-thirdi of the meeting. The writer adds; We claim that much of what w complished yesterday, was duo to tlie fact that a upmber of those who are •ubacribcra to the BfN, were there. Long may it ooutinno to abed its ray. through onr down trodden oouutry. On the first day of July next, aceord ing to the new postal coda, we are to have 300 new money-order postolQoes in the Uuited iSUtes, and arrangements ate now in process for patting them in ope ration. This will complete the number of 3,000 money-order offices in the coun try. The business of our money-order offices amounted last year to over $42, 000,000.
