The Btokes trial was recommenced to- glTgw' day with a largo attendance. The conn-, “ set for the defenoe opened to-day by read ing n detailed printed report of the pro- ing n detailed printed report at the ioqneet bsld body, l>y Coroner Young, evidently with the intention of consnzaing tune. Iq the progress of t^o. testimony sharp tilts occurred between counsel. The question meat as to where on the morning of the killing Fisk?” was asked of a witness; bat the “Did Btokes make any state- to whether he was going any- i the morning of the killmg of Judge thought it inadmissible. Tremaine argned its admissibility, os being part of a connecting link of evi dence, which would prove that his pres ence at the Grand Central Hotel .was not with murderous entent, Tho District Attorney replied, submit ting the inadmissibility of the question, to whioh Tremaine responded very sharply condemning the oonne of the District Attorney and of the press. The following oommnnicution from a valued sabsoiiber reflects the sentiments of unwavering Democrats in Indiana; , Ind. , July 1,1872. Hon. A. U. Stephens:—Dear Sir: If it were really true, as our friends tell us, that this wholesale departure from troth and right into the fold or domicile of the enemy would effect such benifloent re sults, there would be no difficulty with me, and thousands of others, to deter mine what course to pursue; bnt when a few Rsdiesl leaders of the most eorrnpt party became too disaffected to longer work with it, bos the time arrived when the honest masses, who have foaght from principle “for lo, these many years,” ore to be transferred like a lot of sheep or cattle eleor over into the oamp of the enemy ? God forbid t Gan it be true that falsity has become of such distinguished and paramount importance that it is safer to trust the neople under the leadership of false and deceptive in fluences than the time-honored pvinci- ] >les of the Constitution as interpreted by Jefferson, Jaekson, and other jnaliy dis tinguished men who have preceded us. It docs appear as though many who have distinguished tbemsdvse heretofore have become tired ct waiting the return of right reason, and seek to climb up some other tlum tho true way to power whioh appears to he lost to them for the time boiug. It is only ap- jorent, however, if tho peoplo are lo bo irasted with self-govornment. I have ever had an abiding faith in the intelli gence of tho people, I think they willyot return to the original landmarke of the Oonatitntion. There are many things which might be said, bat I have not time or iuolinstioa. Much has been said about the Bail-Bond of Greeley for Hon. Jefferson Dsvis. It has no significance to my mind, except tha Yl-r*.hii««n party bed so elephant on their hands. It was costing too mncli to keep him, and heoee their anxiety to get rid of the trial of one whom they could not have oonvioted. ... ' Their only hope oow is to get the De mocracy divided, which is rather adroit, I admit; but it will not win unless the building which our fathers have reared is to lie upheld by falsehood and mime. To me the contrary has been sadly ennoed for three lari twelre yean of the rule of fanatiolsm and falsehood. If tea leaden of the opposition are wise enough to see it, in the name of Hwven let them eom« to na, and not the Lion- Hearted Democracy of other times oroucb to them. The greet fault of the times j$» man Are Apt to think that poo* pie to Cosgreas become eopenof to them; Bence the mistake of giving servants dominion over oil things, even to thinking lpr them.
