This to a reprint of an English book,
whioh has already passed through three
London editions, sad said to be very pop
ular with gushiog cockney’s and bnxom
English girls. It ia a humorous work-
so-called—though, to persons who are
not educated np to English manners and
English customs, its fan is considerably
narrowed down; in fact for very many
pages at a time the American reader may
admit that he “fails to see it,’’ without
laying himself liable to the reproach of
dullness.
The book derives its priucipal merit
from its local adaptation; hence it to not
altogether oae that is calculated to take
toe American public by storm. Bnt
thereto some demand for it, or Carloton

of HORACE GREELEY; with an introduction by
Cajuui M. Clay. By I*. U. Bairn. Maw York:
Q. W. Cablton. Atlanta : Phillip* A Crew.
A few years ago, a yonng man who
fancied that hp yag specially adapted
by nature, for the broad and noble field
of journalism, applied to Horaoe Gree
ley, hoping “tho Philosopher” wonld ap
prove the estimate the young man had
plaoed npon himself. The advioe he
received was, “Go West, yonng man and
work on a farm,”
That yonng man was L. U. Reavis—
the same who went West and concooted
an unpatriutio scheme to corrupt and de
stroy the sedate society of St Louis, by
removing to that city the National Capi
tol. Instead of going West and workiog
on a farm, as advised, he went West and
bnilt a magnificent capitol for the na
tion (on paper) and dropped it down to
the great wonderment of all the St.
Louisians. No one has ever heard of
that yonng man since ho went West, ex-
oept a tew yean ago, when he had re
moved the Capital and had started on the
return trip' for Washington monument,
whioh he fancied waa a chimney he had
left behind. What haa beoome of him the
world may never know. Perhaps, even
at this late day, he haa taken the advice
of Dr. Greeley and haa gone very tar
West, and ia perhaps propagating five
pound potatoes in toe fertile valleys of
Montana—that “Switzerland of Ameri-
aa Samuel Bowles calls it—aud he
ought to know, for he haa been out
there; though be makes no mention in
Lis book of having met L. If. Roavis on
his travels.
