We have a private letter from a gentle man in Austin, Texas, dated 18tli*July, saying: I waa to-day introduced to a carpet-bagger named Ilodgett. Ia thla your delectable Foster? We arc inclined to think that Foster Blodgett ia in South Carolina, where tha plandating carpet-bag Governor of that State refuses to snrrender him on a Uw. ful requisition from the Governor of Oecrgia. If Foster Blodgett was in Ana- tin, Texas, on the 18th instant, he has smelt a mice, and is on bis way towardSau- down, or some other point We suppose, however, he is still in Sonth Carolina. A mad doo, it is reported, was killed in this oit; lost Honda?. It U certain that several hove been killed this season. It the fearful risk oi letting dogs run at largo were duly considered by oar citizens, s righteous publio sentiment v*o*ld soon require every one of the pests to bo killed or confined. Unless a dog is kept chained, or at least kept from roving, he is useless as a watch-dog, and what use 1ms a city resident for any other kind? A mad dog recently ran through the streets of Louisville, Ky., and before he eould be killed he bit, and in several oases fearfully laoerated, over twenty men, women and children, besides many other dogs, who, in turn, might bo al lowed to repeat the same sad result many times multiplied. Think of the almost inevitable fatality, of hydrophobia, and the appalling deaths which attend I If delayed for several years even, yet tho dread becomes almost insufferable, and brings on this most terrible malady,— Hast some rabid dog bite and tear a score or more of the members of our fami lies before there eon be n stop put to lotting good for nothing and only humful dogs ran at large upon onr streets? The ordinance which requires all dogs without oollors to be put in a pound, and unices redeemed in forty-eight hours, taken to the oity limits and slain, was quite rigidly enforced for a while, but now seems'abandoned. The pound w,s • huge nuisance. Polioemen were bitten in making arrests. Let mad dogs bo promptly and effectually prevented. July 21, 1872, Mr. Ddilur: Tho towu of Monticcollo, in Jasper couuly, is alive with ponplo attending the Conference of the Atlanta District. Town and country havo turned out to hear Bishop Pierco preach, which he has been doing duily siueo Friday morning with his own usual great ability. Somo havo raid that Muutieello is a hard place, hut if we arc to judge by what wo now see, there are other places much harder. There is a very intelligent pop ulation in the county.town, and in tho country also. And although there havo been several homicides, these acts of vio lence are not sustained by the great body of the people. The crops generally are very good.— The rains lately fallen havo rescued many a farmer from iailure. Every prospect exists for the early completion of a railroad running,as survoyed through the very centre of Monticelln. When the town i« thus made easily accessible, we may expect rapid recuperation from the decay iuto which it haa fallen during laic jeon. The Atlanta District Conference whioh I mentioned above, is a Methodist body, composed of delegatee from tho Soath- era Methodist Church of five ooantics, viz: Fulton, DcKalb, Walton, Bockdulc, Newton, Jasper tod part of Gwinnett. There are 61 eburchce iu tho District, with 6,300 white adult members, 61 local preachers, and 16 preachers in charge at ehorchee. There were 338 odditione by baptism to the church iu this limited area during the poet year. Rev. W. II. Potter, now residing in Atlanta, is the Preaiding Elder. Preach ore end lay- meubcri seem to enjoy their meeting very much. Monticeilo extended the moet cordial hospitality. Tho religioua interest seems to be very great, and every thing betokens a good revival. Hoping to aeo yoar face soon, and to be on duty again, I am yours, Tiunr.
