He complains bitterly against Oen. Toombs, because that emi n«nt lawyer has been engaged in op posing it, and beaneo ha chargee what nine-tenths of the people of Georgia be lters to be true—that there was fraud in Bollock's award of the lease contract. The ConetiluUonaUel alleges that Gen Toombs is “a paid oonnaellor," and that he has rewired a fee of $2,500 for this aerrice; that he is trying to “resale the road from tha present leeaeea, in order to give Blodgett another obanoe at it;” that be is the “trims mover and leader of all the elemor and abase, and bnt for him nod the envenomed antipathy to a faw of the leasees, the whole investigation might have been oondueted in the pnblio press and before the Legislature, in a bnsineee- liko, calm and temperate manner;” refers to him aa tbs “retained counsel for Blodgett and Beago,” who had been al lowed to appear bofore the oommittee “in the attitude of a prosecuting officer, and “possibly to attempt to brow-beat the witnesses.” To what depths has tho formerly ohlv alroua Gorduer fallen, that be should be The gentlemen whose names are hereto annexed, have been ehoeen a oommittee of True Democracy—of those who still adhere to the well ertabllshed and time- bonocod prinolplea of the Party—who repudiate any aolion that will tend to tho abeyanoe or subversion of those prinolplea — for tha purpose of preserving the organisation and integrity of tho party as well as its prinoiptea, and hereby call upon all true Demoorate to rally to their anoient standard of principles and organise; and to sand delegates to a State Con vention to assemble In Atlanta on the 20th August, for consultation anil ad visement •• to the beat oonrae to bo pur sued in tha furtherance and mainte nance of the prinoiptea of the party and of Constitutional Liberty. What interest has he in the Stato Road leaee, that he ehonld become eneh an extreme partisan, manifest such a rabid vindictiveness, and indulge iu snob vituperative, bitter and uncalled-for language to-wards Gen. Toombs—so un- oharactertetio of the James Gardner of former days ? True, I have heard that be receives money regularly from the State Road. Whether this be true or not, I oannot say; neither do I say that there is any impropriety in his thus re ceiving money. The course of his paper on this subject it very strong presumptive etidenoe that he has an interest in this matter different from what public jour nalists are oommonly supposed to have in questions of pnblio polioy. He ongkt, at least, to he very oarofnl about finding fault with Gen. Toombs for being a paid oouniel tor a party of gentlemen who al lege that they have been wronged / Does Mr. Gardner desire him to per form such eervioe as this for nothing ? Is there any more or greater objection to Gen. Toombs being a paid counsellor— well known as auoh to all the world— tnan for the ConetUulionaliet to be paid to advooate and defend the present lease without that foot being known ? I do not know that auoh is tha fact, but it is quite unreasonable to suppose otherwise. He has a right to do no tor pay, and I make no eomplaint at that, if there be nothing reprehensible connected with it; bnt under suob circumstances, lie should be the last man to complain of Gen. Toombs being paid for bis legal services. But it is particularly reprehenaihlo in him to apeak of Gen. Toombs as beteg ‘theoouuael of Blodgett," and, ns desir- S “to resouo the Road from the pres- leaaees. In order to give Blodgett another chance at it." Ur. Gardner knows that General Toombs U not am ployad by Blodgett, aud that be does not desire to give Blodgott "toother ebanoo" at tha Road; and, further, that if the Collter-Wyly-8. B. Hoyt-J. R. Wallace Inman, Swan A Uo.-Seago-Dobbina Company, should havothc lcaao awarded to tham, Blodgett will have no “ohanoe at it;” and, further, that if it bad been awarded to this Company by Bullock at first, Blodgett would have Lad no "ohanoe •tit” Perhaps it ia saying too muoh to allege that Mr. Gardner knows all this, and I will quality the remark by aaying that I do not see how any impartial man can conclude that General Toombs is the “oonnsel of Blodgett,” or that he desires Blodgett to have'‘another chance at it,” or that it is possible for him ever, under any airoumatauocs, to havo onothor chauco at it. Snoh insinuations exhibit desperation which conld only be instigated by inter ested motives, and aapirit ol unfairness on the part of tho Editor of the COhMuUoh- aliet; or that ho ia demented.
