State Road. Whether this be true or
not, I oannot say; neither do I say that
there is any impropriety in his thus re
ceiving money. The course of his paper
on this subject it very strong presumptive
etidenoe that he has an interest in this
matter different from what public jour
nalists are oommonly supposed to have in
questions of pnblio polioy. He ongkt,
at least, to he very oarofnl about finding
fault with Gen. Toombs for being a paid
oouniel tor a party of gentlemen who al

Does Mr. Gardner desire him to per

there any more or greater objection to

quite unreasonable to suppose otherwise.
He has a right to do no tor pay, and I
make no eomplaint at that, if there be

Toombs being paid for bis legal services.
But it is particularly reprehenaihlo in
