E*oon ardek.—We will notloe the performance
of this play, by the Histrionic Society, in our next
y, wo leern, occurred at a room on Do
ra street, where Mr. Phillips! with several of his
friends, were together spending the evening, when
one of the cempiny, Mr. Milton Malone, of Colum
bia, Os., aroM.and apparently without provocation,
shot Mr. Phillips twice lu the breast with a largo
Navy pistol.
Dr. lickney wee Immediately sent for, but Mr.
Phillips was breathing hie last when the Doctor ar
rived. He died, without having uttered a word,
i Aftoeu arinutes after he was shot. Mr. Ma
lone, we understand, was under the inioenceof
. Mr. Malone, we learn, surrendered himself
immediately to policemen Langley and Haynes, end
was committed to prioon.
Thor* was some Intimation that Mr. PhllMpe end
Mr. Melona had engaged in a personal altercation
daring the day, bat them was no evidence of this
m the contrary the belief is prevalent
they had never met before.
Wo deeplv regrot this ur fortunate dlffonlty. or
rather unexpected event Mr. Phillips had many
friends in the city who will deeply mown hie loss.
Impostast Assser.- Yesterday morning a young
man, of respectable mein, aold at Mason's suction
■alee floe horse and buggy for the small sum of
9164 00. No one seemed to suspect him of any
wrong action except Mr. May son, who related his
apprehensions to Lieut. Holmes, of the police, end
policeman M. M. White. These gentlemen deter
mined to Investigate the nutter. They approached
the young gent calling himself J. B. Binnum,
end enquired whore be was from. He stated that
he hailed directly from Borne, having stopped there,
he arid, but a day or so to rest hi* hone. On fur
ther questioning, Mr. B. suspecting something, pro-
duoed e letter, (spurious) from hie fhiher, to prove
that he me all right. Here a happy thought struck
Lieut Holmes; he asked Mr. Binuum where he
lived originally, and to give him some references.
Mr. Binnum wrote the names of some prominent
merchants In Columbia, 8. 0. On comparing the
handwriting of the letter and references, it was
easily seen that both were done by the same person.
This was one point gained.
Then a nloe lltUs piece of strategy was performed.
Mr. White went off end pretended to get a dispatch
from Boms relative to Binnum. He got a blank
and AUetf It out with words to the offeot that no
such nun as Binnum had been In Rome. When
Binnum heard thie, be called Lieut Holmes aside
and made a dear breast of the matter. Bald the
hone and buggy belonged to Sellgman k HaU, liv
ery stable men, In Memphis, Tenneaae. A friend
turned the conveyance over to him, at the Ballroad
Junction, where he aeyi, he nude a swap of horses.
He then drove ea fast as possible to Gave Spring.
Georgia, and from that point to Atlanta. He sold
his equipage at low figures in order to pooket the
money end leave. Instead of being jamsd Binnum,
the true name of the forty arrested is J. V. Vaughan.
He has been toweling for the buetneee house of
of Shire, of Colombia, South Carolina The last
earthly remains of Blno-Vanghan have been de
