ITho lo'ffowiug tribute 'o the memory o( the Son.
Linton Stephens is from the pen of a niece of Henry
\V. LougfAlow, the American poet, who has attained
bo much distinction iu the Eastern as well as the
Western continent. We feel that our readers will,
as we do, highly appreciate this tribute, not only
from the tone of Us touching sympathy, but from
the source frees which it comes.—Editohs Son.]
Another noble name is added
To the list of shrined dead;
Another strong, grand form departed
To his lowly, narrow bed I
Another guiding hand is taken;
Ono mors heart is calm and still;
O, my God I ’Us now in anguish—
* Bow me to Thyhlgher will I
Gone, in all his prime end rigor,
Passed from out the field of life;
But he bore himself as conqueror.
Nobly In that weary strife I
To Thy feet, 0 Holy Jesus.
Now we brin gthis crushing load;
Only by Thy help and guidance
Can we tread this thorny road.
In thy hands, we then, confiding,
Leave the one to us so dear—
Leave until* spirit risen
tn thy glory shall appear 1

KXCRltPTS OF FUJI AND HUMOR.
A youthful novioo in smoking
turned deadly pale and threw hie eigur
away. “OU dear,” ho saul “tliere’a
something iu that cigar that’s wakin’me
sick.” “I know whet it is,” said his
companion, polling away. “What” ‘To
bacco.”
Hay “What shall we namo our lilt!
boy?” Laid a young wife to her husband.
“Call him Peter.” Oh no, I never knew
any) ody named Peter that could earn
his salt. “ Well call him Salt Peter,
then.”
fiGF* A quarrelsome couple were dis
cussing the subject of epitaphs aud
tombstones, and the husbaud said: “My
dear, what kind of a stone do you tliiuk
they will ffive me when I die ?” “Brim
stone, my love,” was tho affectionate re-
ply.
<9* A little thing iu Sabbath school
was asked by her teacher ‘-if she always
said her prayers night and morning.”—
!‘No, Miss, I don’t.” Why, Mary, are
yon not afraid to go to Bleep in the dark
without asking God to take care of yon
andwatoh over yon till morning?” “No
Miss, I ain’t—’cause I sleep in the mid
die.”
J@- “ My dear sir, I will pay yon iu
time; aud since time is money, tho lon
ger yon wait the surer you are of your
pay.”
John A. Stephens Suggested for the Leg
islature.
To the Editors of the Herald: Allow
me to suggest the name of John A.
Stephens &h that of a suitable candidate
for the Legislature. He is a Democrat,
a man of ability and of the highest in
tegrity. The Democratic party would
honor itself in nominating him, and I
am sure be would be elected by the largest
majority ever given a candidate in Ful
ton county.
whose Democracy is above suspicion, is
An Old Democrat.
We find the foregoing in the Herald of
this morning. Mr. Stephens is a clear
headed, able man, who would make a
good Representative.
Liabilities of Telegraph Companies.
In Portland, Maine, an important legal
deoision has jnBt been rendered, which
settles the law, so far, at least, as the
State of Maine is concerned, as to the
liabilty of telegraph companies to their
patrons in CA&e of their failure to trans
mit or deliver messages. Two years ago
a firm in Portland, sent a dispatch to
Baltimore, accepting an offer of a cargo
of corn at a given price. The message
was written on what is known as a “night
blank,” at the usual night rates. The
message was not forwarded in time, and
the cargo was not secured, and great loss
was sustained in oonsequencc.
A claim was preferred against the tele
graph company, which was resisted on
tho ground that the night blanks con
tain a printed condition to the effect
that the company shall not be liuble for
an amoui t exceeding the sum paid for
transmission, which was forty-eight ceuts.
The decision of the court sustains the
plaintiff’s claim in full, the ground of the
decision being, that although telegraph
companies may establish reasonable
rules, they cannot, by printed notices on
their blanks, relieve themselves from
the liubilitj winch the law imposed on
them.
A Father of Fifty Legitimate Children.
The Waco (Texas) Advance publishes
tho following statement by a correspon
dent, who, it says, is one of the most
trustworthy and respected citizens of the
place:
“Thero lives in our midst a man who
is the father of fifty legitimate children;
he has been married to five different wo
men. By wife No. 1, thirteen boys; by
No. 2, eighteen children; No. 9, ten; No.
4, six; by No. 5, three. Thirty-five of
these children are still living—or wore a
few years ago—eight were killed or lost
iu the Confederate army, aud seven have
died natural deaths.
“Thirteen of the boys—all children
of No. 1, held office in tho Galloway
brigade Platte county, Mo.*, tloops,
Burns commanding. Of the children
by No. 2 there were four iu the Coufed-
erato army, in different brigades. By
wife. No. 8 there was one in the Confed
erate States army and two in the Heel
Flies, making twenty sons in the Confed
erate aervice. The man is hale, healthy,
und hearty. I know him well, as also his
wife No. 5 and her children. She is
young, with a mountain of wealth of
hail’, fine looking, pleasant, aud prom
ises to still add to the population of the
country. I will, if required, produce the
affidavit of the father of this numerous
progeny to the truth of this statement.”
Per® Ilyaclalhe’s Wife—'Who She Is.
Tho New York IVorW says:
Mis. Emilio J. Merrimsn, who has
married Fere Hyacintbc, in London,
will lie remembered by many persona in
thin city and Brooklyn as one who Iiub
led a very eveDtlul life. She was sepa
rated from her husband some years be
fore his death, sold a small house and a
couple of lots in Brooklyn, which be
hsd deeded to her, aud with her daugh
ter to travel abroad, acting as agent ior
a “patent” corset, and endeavoring to
aot as correspondent to papers, in which
last she was not successlul. The
following is an extract from one of her
letters published in a fashion magazine
(Dcmorest’s) iu thia city, in September,
i860:
I have seen the Empress with a white
straw, trimmed very plainly in bine.
Her dress was also blue, with a black lace
sbnwl. On another occasion she wore a
blank Neapolitan braid, trimmed with
white lace. This waa worn with a parple
drops and black laoe. She always looks
lovely, bat best in these colors, with her
blonde complexion. Shoes are round
toed, with the heel os small and aa near
the centre of the foot as one can possibly
stand np in. Hair is atill very fashiona
ble, but not so elaborate over the fore
head. As women grow more voluminous
in their dress, the men, iu shockingly
had taste, seem to dwindle into spider
like insiguificonce with their aoeuty
clothes. Eujllr J. Mkkuiman.
Mis. Mcrrimau was converted to Hu
manism while on this trip. After her
husband's death she returned to thia city
in order to obtain the money for an in
surance upon his life, which ho bad pre
sented toner during their early married
life, and which she had kept paid np
while abroad. While lieie she became
reconverted to Protestant i-m, under the
miuiatrutioua of Itev. Joseph Thompson,
of the Chnr>:h of the Tabernacle; but
dually left New York and went beck to
Faria, where Fete Hyueintho converted
her hack again to Romanism, aud was
converted by her to matrimony.
