SHOOTING AFFRAY.
A Lively Little Warfare.
Yesterday afternoon about two o’clock a serious
altercation took plaoe on Whitehall atreet, between
Mr. George 0. Tanner, freight train conductor of
the State Hoad, and Mr. Francis O. Per-y, a stamping
car upbolitcr-r. employed In the office of the Pull
man Bleep.of Car Company, at the Union Pren*n*

was began yesterday with the singing of tha Grand
Requiem Maaa yeaterdey morning, was attended by
a tremendous assemblage of people. The Catholic

Mr, Perry's seat at tho breakfast table of the Na
tional Hotel yesterday morning. This circumstance
aimo>ed Mr. Perry. He aLuaed the servants and

Mr. Teuner, and which provoked from him some
remark. Words wero multiplied for some time,
when Mr. Tanner a*iaed an luketaud from the bar
of the hotel offlee, and burlad it at Perry, sinking
him on the arm.
Perry thereupon left, inviting Tanner down to
tho Passenger Depot, where he said they would sew
tic the difficulty.

about 1 P. M. At that Ume, just as Tannar was re
turning from the dining room of the hotel end was
stepping on the sidewalk Perry brushed by Tanner

sirous to avoid a difficulty by eluding him, turned
and euteiad the hotel. Perry soon followed and

Mr. Fred W. Waddy, aa If he sought a difficulty.
Mr. Waddy, anxious to prevent a collision between
the parties, assiduously kept himself directly bo-
tween Tanner and Perry.

Mr. Tanner a»fl Waddy left tho hotel, crossed the
rallroed sad proceeded np Whitehall street. Anlv<

halted for a moment to talk with some onu, when
they observed Perry Immediately behind them. He
peered by, however, and walking on up Whitehall,
■topped In front of Mr. II. Mub.eubrlnk'a store.

whereupon Tanner drow his pstol Instantly and
fired upon Perry, inflicting a lloah wound la hla

The Grand Requiem Mass was sung amid the pro-
roundest solemnity from 10 to 11 a. M., after which
Bishop Fersleo proceeded to deliver the fuueral dis
course In the Ohurob In the presence of the remains
of tha lamented decease and a large congregation,
fils discourse, which lasted vbout an hour, was pro
nounced one of tha ablest, moat eloqusnt and
touching of hla entire life. The usual fuueral cere
monies were performed in the Church, while many
huudreds outside, eager and yearning to witness the
iaettributo to .the dead, were unable to gam admit
tance byreaeon of the multitude. After the ceremonies
in the Church were ooncluded, the remains were re
moved from the Church and borne to the vault pre
pared for their reception in the basement of the
Church, amid the tears of hundreds of hie devotes,
congregation and friends.
Thus has passed away a pious minister, a devoted
pastor, a beloved instructor, a learned man, a tried
friend, a public benefactor and an honored citizen.
His funeral obsequies were attend'd by Catholic
and Protestant alike, many of whom seemed to vl.
with each other In paying a last tribute to one whom
they admired for hla talents and revered for his vir
tue.
