Forayth county, waa nominated at 5
o’clock on Friday evening at the Gaina-
rill. Convention on th.92d ballot—re
ceiving 42 vote., and MoMillan 21—ex
actly two-tbirds.
Dr, Millar and Mr. Greeley.
{•We have aeert it reported that Dr.
Hiller, in some of his recent speoohea,
ha. enerted that Mr. Greeley was never
any more of an Abolitionist than Mr.
Clay or Mr. Webster.
Now, it is well known that we do not
foond our opposition to Mr. Greeley
upon any of his anti-slavery views ol
acts; not even his enoouragement to
Ossawattamie John Brown in hia fanati
cal attempt to stir up an insurrection in
Virginia, nor bis enlogy upon tbia
‘martyr of liberty” as he considered
him.
All there thing, we pretermit I We
assign them to the "Silurian period" in
our history.
We plaoe our opposition pointedly
upon hia present position, and the pub-
lioly avowed principle, on wbioii he ia
now seeking to come into power.
But we oanuot forbear the expression
of our astonishment, that a man of Dr.
Miller’s standing and intelligence should
have made snob a statement. He ought
to have known better.
What ia to be thought of such a lead- r
of the people when the trnto, ea appears
upon the records, is that Mr. Greeley
most virulently assailed the Adjustment
measures of 1860, introduced in the
8enate by Mr. Clay I
What reader of ordinaiy intelligence,
does not know with what bitterness Mr.
Greeley denounced Mr. Webster for his
support of there measures of concilia
tion and harmony between the States;
based throughout, upon principles of
right and joalioe, aooording to the clearly
stated term* of the Federal oompaot ?
Doe* not Dr. Miller know that when a
proposition was pending in Congress to
carry out there measures in good faith,
"in principle end substance,” (to which
both Mr. Clay and Mr. Webster were
pledged,) Mr. Greeley in hia Tribune
used this language:

The italics are oure, but such waa tba
ferocious language on that oooaaioo, of
Dr. Miller's present candidate for the
Presidency, and whom be represent! as
having never been more of an Abolition
ist than Mr. Clay or Mr. Webster.
This ia a part, and only a small part of
the reoord of that candidate on this and
kindred oonatitational questions.
H* says he • tan da upon his reoord.
Now, Dr. Miller either knew there parte
of Mr. Greeley’s record, or ba did not.
If he did know them, end for any pur
pose whatever withheld hia knowledge,
and created a falsa impression, by what he
said, he ia certainly not each n leader aa

If ba did not know them, then he is
oertainly not n fit person to give tha

Tba Doctor can tsko cither horn of
the dilemma he choose*. But this ex
position will give the honest inquiring
masses of the Democracy, some light
upon Mr. Greeley’s statesmanship and I beoaure ol tha tariff; bat in all ooontries

the fact that all over tbe world, iron is

Dearly double those ol three years ago.
The world ia iron hungry; the world

can be produced. It ia not probable
that for five or even tan yean benoe,
