were cold all day, and ’here was no pulse

began, were unintelligible. About noon,
however, he said quite distinctly and
with sonic f orce, **I know that

During tho day he recognized various

HIS YOUNOER DAUGHTER,
Mbs Gabrielle, waa with him through
Thursday eveuing. Throughout Friday
the elder daughter, Miss Ida, was in con

The wintry night had fairly set in,
when the inevitable hour came. With
out, sleighs were running to end fro,
bearing to Chappaqua, the nearest tele

the tnousands of anxious hearts in the
great city, nea-by, kept demanding.
Within, the daughter and a few ot era

Mr. Greeley died shortly before seven
o'clock last evening, and there is not a
nun in any part of the country who will
not reoeive the news with sorrow. Mr.
Greeley has made a great mark in Amer
ican history, and bis loss in journalism is
one which cannot he replaced. When
people spoke of the Tribune, they meant
Mr. Greeley, for he whs the life and sonl
of that journal—without him, it as an
empty shell. We present elsewhere a
fair review of Mr. Greeley’s life—hi*
name and reputation are no longer in
any danger. Full justice will be done
to him, an l if he fell into errors—as who
has not ?—they will not be remembered
now. The incidents of hi* last sioknefs
were pecoliaily distressing, and from all
that we can learn, his reverses daring
the late campaign cannot aloue account
for them.
Had he been successful, the probabili
ties are that be would not have lived, so
overtaxed was his s rei gtb, and so ut
terly broReu down seems to have been
his constitution. The labors and excite
ment of the oAUvass were more than his
body or mind could bear. Dr. Ham-
Dined, one of the most distinguished
surgeons in the land, told a reporter, on
Thursday, that he had heard “ Mr. Gree-
iey became demented even before the
election.” It would seem incredible that
bis friends should have kept this fact
from the pub io knowledge, if we did
uotknow that they concealed the equally
npoi'ant fact of his mental aberration
au fi
and fatal Mne.'S until Wednesday last.
Ih’8 extraordinary coarse is only loo

Greeley’s f -ienus have displayed in ref
