In France the political situation is ex tremely oritioal. The people are so vol atile in their temperate re that it is at all times difflealt to tell what the morrow may bring forth. M. Thiers has been playing with both parties like n tree French eonrtier, and while, a* a citizen, he ia an .ardent Mon arohist, yet, as President, be finds it hard to forego personal preferment and submit to a doubtful result. He has enongh of the hnman leaven in him, notwithstanding bis real convictions, to prefer picking a Bepnblican bone of his own, to tbe fattest oflhe land as tbe gift of another. In hie message at the opening of tbe present session of the Chamber of Dep- a ties, be evownd his doubt of tbe ability of a Monarchy to establish itself, and advised all to aid patriotically in the welfare of the Bepnhlis. Miuiater DuFaure, on the part of the Oorernment, introduced a counter-resolution, providing for the ap pointment of a committee of thirty to decide the question of Executive power. A spirited debate ensued, resulting, how ever, in a majority of about forty, in six hundred, for theCovaroment. On the reading of the minutes next morning, If. Bartgnou, Conservative, protested against tha rote on Minister Du Fa ore's insolation, us hs did not be have it to be n fair expression of opinion. In tlis debate oonaequent, a Paris Depa ty aooused M. Thiers of enoonraglng and conniving at tha addmasee ef eoafideaee tent him by tha municipalities; while Miuiater Lo Franc defended the action ef tbe Government. M. Mist Clara Louise Kellogg next sung very touchingly, know that my Redeemer Livetb,” after which llcuty Ward Beecher delivered the fuuerai oration. He says : "Of ill who have pinned away, not one has gone for a long time wuo will carry with him so much reverence—so much honor—so muon devotion. Who is this man who gets b11 these civ o honors ? Who is this man? Was ho one of those great prii ces of wealth ? Was he one of greet military renown ? No 1 and yet here are men from every walk in life; here is onr Cnief Magistrate; here are onr most prominent c.tizuna from all parts of the country, gathered around the bier of this man, who is now no more. Here we see that criticism is disarmed. A lit tle lime ago, and men’s political passions were all aroused, und we differ as much on politics as ever, but here lies before us this mau who but a brief time ago wua a great leader iu the land, unu whv d- > men of uh pat ties gather here in rev erence round his remains. Heroes, to day, octweeu the two oceans, there is seuicely a man or obild who has not felt tho benefleient influence ot tbe character of Hoiooe Greeley. Horace Greeley gave tbo strength of bis life to enuca- tion, to humuuity and especially to per sons who could little help tbemaelves. He bud a great heart, that longed for sympathy. Though ho may be remem bered by those memorial* which curry other men's n urea down, bo will be re membered throughout this land for those great qualities of mind and heart which made bis character commensurate, as it were, with the genius of Ibis great Republic. His influence bss gone oat to tench a nobler manhood to tbe me chanic, ihe laborer uud farmer. What more can we say in eulogy ot tho char acter of tbm illustrious dead 7 Alas I ulna! he bsua long and not iutempeatous voyage and boa reached Ihe shore. How blessed are the dead that die ,i the Lord. May God grant that in tbe solemnity of these thoughts, iq which we lisvo gathered hrre, it msy be onr happy let that, when we die, augels ■hall open the gates und receive us into the glory of the Lord. ” After an ode by a quartette from Suiot Francis Xaviers church was sung, D.. Aa a paalor and a per.-oual friend, I cannot now here attempt to depiot the worth and great ness of the departed jonrptlut. Horace Greeley’s epitaph is wntten in homes u id throughout Ihe length tad breadth of the land. .Where are now all party and religions difference t 1 ask you to consider here what it is that brought forth ■<> much love for thia man? It waa not his official position he held, uor wss it even his unquestionable ge nius—it waa tbe attraction of pure aod simple goodners. The hundreds of toil- worn men who yesterday waited for boars to look upou the face of the dead, were not drawn there by any nit re curi osity. Tbey went to cast a look at tbe feature* of oue who bad been their con stant and untiring friend. Horace Gree ley struck for what be believed to be ngbt, until inind and be«rt gave way He ties dead upon the Held. Let me re mind you that Uotace Greeley's life was remarkably practical, and so maa, it aroma to me, waa mure given to practi cal purpose* than he. Tha President of the nat'Ou joins in tLis tribute to the patriot and tbe man. (Murmurs of sp- planse.) Let ms take ucooaioD to urge Mr. Greeley's views of Christianity. He 'ived on tbe essential .ruths of Chris tianity. Ho laid on them his weary bead and weary heart, and died w-.sry with the turmoil of hie. Does truth come to us f "I know that my R d-emer livetb." In Horace Greeley I re r ignizc a proof of immortality. Ho looked from the troubles of tho tuigiug world to the p*ace of the grave, where the wick ed cease from troubling, snd^he |v .ary are at rest. I thank God from my heart and soul that when all this woilu was failing from bis eyes, he reuiauibrred, "1 know that my Redeemer livetb.” It w.-a tbe triumph of his life and of his deatD, and now aa we take onr brother irom Ibis march, which has known him so often, but will know him no more, let this be ear lesson “Wo know that our Redeemer livetb.'
