TO TH33 PUBLIC. I
IN the la 4 number oT the Journal A Messenger’ a p iper pub ’
fished in Macon, Ga. appears an article headed “Mail Irregular
ities,” in width great iigustice is done me as Post Master at Fort :
I Valley.
The Editor says :—“ln passing down the South Western Kail I
Road a few days ago, on Monday mornii.g, we called at-the Post
Olfi :e at Kt. Valley, through which our*Knoxville package pass- 1
es. and found it ly.ng there snug and dry—having been received
at that office on 1h? Wsdnftdsiy morning pretiou* to our ti- 1
•of. We have no doubt that all the irregularities iu the recep
tlon of oar paper at Knoxville, are justly chargeable to the care- 1
le<sne*s of the Post Master at Ft: Valley ; but a* he lias very re
j centTy appointed an intelligent assistant to take charge of the
offi -e, we hope and beliyve that in future, we shall liave no com- I
plaints to make of its management.”
T!ie -Journal A Messenger is due at this oftt e on Wedn'jd-fy
morning, but the packages often go hy iu the mails to America*
or some other office South or West of Ft. Valley, and return or
arrive here on Thursday or Friday. Now, the Hack which car- i
ries the K mxv.lle Mail leaves Ft. Valley on Moud iys, WeJnes- ;
days and Fridays at il o’clock, a. m. and (he mail from Ameri- t
cus arrives here at 5$ minutes after 9a. m. every day. Con.se j
q tently, all packages of newspapers which are missent to Atner
icuaoji Wednesday and return to This office on Friday, cannot
go to Knoxville until Monday.
jDn tiie occasion referred to in the above article the Senior Ed- !
itor of tiie -Journal A Messenger’ “called” a* lit; states, at this j
offi-e, and was distinctly informed hy the Post Master in Fort
Talley, why his “Knoxville package was found here lying snug i
and dry,” and in stating furtlicr that it had been received at !
this office “on the Wednesday morning tirevioas to his visit” lie j
itoli 1 a statement which be had every reason to believe to 1
be untrue.
Witlio a the fear of successful contradiction. I assert the im
plied charge of mismanagement by my late assistant to be en- ;
tirdy false—a nt ire edi • eat. coup tenc. or attentive Post Office j
