This time of year just tends to evoke memories of crashing over a snow bank and skidding into a parking lot before forcing your family to hike out into the wilderness to dig up a huge evergreen by hand and tie it to the roof of your Family Truckster station wagon. But why? Whether we go to a tree farm or a Lowes garden center or maybe you just pull a box out of the shed and hook the pre-lit plastic branches onto the metal pole. It’s all magical, and it sets the tone for the gift giving season. But, where does this compulsion come from? Why do we bring dead trees into our homes and decorate them for Christmas? First of all, “O Tannenbaum,” is an old German folk song that we translated into “Oh Christmas Tree” maybe 200 years ago. Tannenbaum is literally the German word for Fir Tree or evergreen, so therein lies part of the mystery of the Christmas tree. On August 28 of2023, Gabrielle Grace was driving when she swerved to avoid another vehicle at the in tersection and struck a tree. Mr. Warren Taylor was the other driver involved in the crash, and following the young woman’s death, Taylor made it his mission to prevent wrecks like this from ever happen ing again. He has worked with both the Worth County Board of Commissioners as well as Dougherty County since the fatal accident. Ronald Sumner is the [WCFB] pres ident. Connie Melton is the WCFB office manager. WCFB received the GFB Rewarding Excellence in Ag Program (REAP) Harvester Award in the organization’s medium membership divi sion. GFB’s REAP award honors county Farm Bureaus for the organization/member ship, advocacy, leadership de velopment, education & out reach activities they did be tween Sept. 1, 2023, and Aug. 31, 2024. The REAP Awards are divided into three tiers - Harvester (1st), Planter (2nd) and Cultivator (3rd) with tier winners in each of GFB’s three membership categories - small, medium and large. “No grassroots organi zation succeeds without its volunteer leaders, and we are extremely blessed at Georgia Farm Bureau to have dedi cated volunteers all over the state supporting Georgia ag riculture,” said GFB President Tom McCall. “We’re proud of all of them, and we’re honored to recognize Worth County for the work they have done to promote agriculture in the lo cal community this past year.” As a REAP Harvester Award winner, WCFB re ceived a plaque and President Ronald Sumner received an embroidered Farm Bureau vest. A dedicated group of alumni, fondly referred to as “The 76ers,” meet monthly to fellowship, reconnect, and reflect on their shared past while working together to create a brighter future. This year, their collective spirit of giving reached the resi dents of Pruitt Nursing Fa cility in Sylvester, Georgia. On Saturday, December 14, 2024, the 76ers distributed over 100 gifts to patients at the facility, with each resi dent receiving a cozy throw blanket and a pair of skid safety socks. This thought ful gesture brought warmth, comfort, and smiles to those in need during the holiday season.
