Turkey hunters reminded
to be sure of targets
The Georgia Department of
Natural Resources, Wildlife
Resources Division (WRD)
reminds turkey hunters to always
identify their targets before pulling
the trigger. Opening weekend of
turkey season, five accident reports
were filed with WRD reporting
victims who were mistaken as
game. “Mistaken for game
accidents should never occur,” says
Dan Forster, WRD Assistant Chief
of Game Management.
In addition identifying their
target, WRD urges turkey hunters
to take the following precautions:
1. Select a calling position, such
as the base of a tree, that provides a
background as wide as your
shoulders. Make sure you can see at
least 180 degrees around you.
2. Do not stalk a gobbling turkey.
The wild turkey has excellent
eyesight and hearing and the
chances of getting close are slim.
3. Be particularly careful when

using a gobbler call. The sound and
motion may attract other hunters.
Do not move, wave or make turkey
sounds to alert another hunter to
your presence. Instead, yell in a
loud voice.
4. When you harvest a turkey, be
careful when carrying it from the
woods. Do not allow the wings to
hang loosely or the head to be
displayed in such a way that
another hunter may think it is a live
bird. If possible, conceal the turkey
in a blaze orange garment or other
material.
5. Hunters should wear blaze
orange when moving to and from
their vehicle and hunting site.
Also, anytime a hunter is moving
between hunting sites they should
have blaze orange on their upper
bodies to lessen their chances of
being mistaken for game.
Turkey season runs from March
22 - May 1 5.
