Serving Peach County For Over 100 Years
Crowds brave heat for festival fun
By Brian Shreve
News Editor
The 101-degree weather was
no match for the peaches as the
weeklong 2007 Georgia Peach
Festival reached its successful
climax last Saturday in Fort
Valley.
Throughout the day, swarms of
festival goers—first-timers and
seasoned veterans alike—from
around Peach County, Middle
Georgia and well beyond, filed
into the downtown streets where
a wide variety of vendors had
already set up shop.
When asked, some said they
had come for the arts and crafts,
many others for the famed
peach cobbler; by the end of the
day, all seemed to agree it was a
festival for the books.
“I like this small town,” said
Vincent Tsay, who was visiting
the United States from Taiwan.
“I had lunch at the Historical
Society [luncheon], and the old
ladies were so nice. My family
and I are trying to enjoy every
event here ”
“I’ve come in years past, and
it’s just a fun place to be,” said
Sylvia Centeno, a floral cre¬
ations vendor from Perry. “And
now that I’m a vendor, it’s still
a great place to be. It’s good to
see families enjoying the day in
spite of the heat.”
Earlier daytime events includ¬
ed a morning parade, the annu¬
al Peach Hat Contest and the
Historical Society Luncheon.
But as any late sleeper or those
who had misplaced their sched¬
ules of events can attest, the
streets had plenty of liveliness
on their own, regardless of
time.
For its first Peach Festival
since the 1920s, the Austin
Theater was open in all its fit¬
ting glory as young and old
crowded in for a day of puppet

shows and music from profes¬
sional entertainers, as well as
the all-day Jailhouse Alley Fine
Art Show and Sale.
“This theater is wonder¬
ful—really serves a purpose,”
said Ouida Luckie, president of
Jailhouse Alley Art Center.
Despite a merciless season,
the peaches managed to make
their own respected appearance;
those who did not partake of
them at least took snapshots.
“Today business is boom¬
ing,” said James Banter, a fes¬
tival peach salesman for both
Big 6 Farms and Lane Packing
Co. “These are local peaches,
so everybody knows they’re
good.”
And then there was the cob
bier. Rich Bennett, head chef
of this year’s “World’s Biggest
Peach Cobbler,” said more than
one of those who stood in line
for a taste—some as long as two
hours—exclaimed that it was,
indeed, “the best one ever.”
One anxiously waiting cou
pie, Hank and Freida Webber,
had made the trip to Fort Valley
from Dade City, Fla. upon hear¬
ing of the pastry masterpiece!
“We heard about it, and yeah,
we’re really looking forward
to that cobbler,” Hank Webber
said.
“It was just a little better than
normal,” Bennett said of his
creation.
As the sun began to descend,
the party was just getting started
with live music on the court¬
house lawn from local band The
Skeeterz and a highly anticipat¬
ed set from the Atlanta-based
band. Mother’s Finest.
“1 haven't missed a Peach
Festival yet,” said State Rep.
Tony Sellier, also among the
crowd. “Even when I was liv¬
ing in Mexico. 1 think it’s awe¬
some. The number of people
and the diversity of the crowd—
it’s just inspiring to me.”
