Let's Talk About
Independence «
As we celebrate our independence on the Fourth of July, we
must remember that, like Freedom, Independence ain’t free. We
have grown up during trying times in this country.
We have seen Affirmative Action come and go. We have seen
great strides in Civil Rights. We have come to a greater under¬
standing between the races. And, like Supreme Court Justice
Clarence Thomas encouraged us, many of us are still looking for
and trying to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps.
However, recent Supreme Court Actions of last week signal
a serious threat to what independence means to the American
citizen. Shifts in the opinions and rulings on Rowe v wade and
Brown v The Board of Education reach deep into the conscious¬
ness of how we as Americans live on a daily basis.
The issues around Rowe v Wade, in my opinion are personal
issues and should be looked upon on an individual basis by each
of us. Brown v The Board of Education, on the other hand, is a
matter that should be close to each of our hearts no matter where
you were bom or what race, creed or color your are.
The best education for our children should be at the heart of
the education issue. If we allow something to take the place of
this importance, we risk placing in jeopardy all of the educa¬
tional needs of our children. In fact, the matter is so sensitive to
us all, we will, I believe, revert to bickering and fighting instead
of looking for ways and means to provide the best education for
our children.
Independence starts with education. If gain the best education,
be it at Fort Valley State University or the University of Georgia,
we give ourselves a head start on gaining the independence
needed to be a genuine contributor to the American way of life.
So, fire up the grills. Get the condiments ready. Put on some
good soul, country, contemporary or your favorite music CD.
But never forget the struggles fought for the independence that
we have. Moreover, think about the difficult days ahead in our
struggle to maintain our state of independence as American
citizens.
Finally, be careful. If you go forth cm the forth with a fifth,
you may not come forth on the fifth.
